Okay, I’m an old, old 40k player and I’ve been playing IG for most of those cough… splutter… years. Recently, however, I was working on another army build and the following questions came up. I’ve re-read the Codex several times, searched online, and wracked my brains, but I can’t seem to figure things out.

1. Let’s start with Ursakar Creed. My question is this: does his Iron Discipline special rule only apply to units he has been attached to? (And, presumably, the same goes for Kell, if he choose to attach to another unit.) The text on Creed state quite clearly that he has the Iron Discipline doctrine. However, nowhere does it state that he (nor Kell) has the Leadership ability. So his higher Ld is only granted to units he joins and not to any IG model in a 12” range, as per normal Officers. It seems stupid, and contrary to what GW wanted the character to be/do, but it does look right to me.

2. Now how about Commissars? Say, for the sake of argument, I have an IG army with the maxed-out five Commissars. If I remember correctly, the rules for Advisors state that Commissars are attached to the HQ Platoon Command Squad first, then to Infantry Platoon Command Squads, then to either Stormtroopers, Armoured Fist Squads or Conscript Platoons, correct?

So, for instance, if I had an army consisting of an HQ, two two-squad Infantry Platoons, and a single Stormtrooper Squad, I’d have to place one Commissar in the HQ, one in each of the Infantry Platoon Command Squads, and the final two could go to any of the four Infantry Squads. I think that’s right.

However, now let’s say that I have no Infantry Platoons, nor Armoured Fist Squads, nor Conscript Platoons. I also have no Stormtrooper Squads. After the onligatory HQ claims one, where do the other four Commissars go? Anywhere? Nowhere?

(Note that obviously I’m talking about regular Commissars here and not Independent Commissars (and thus, I suppose, the same argument could apply to Priests and Sanctioned Psykers).)

Anyone got any answers for me, please?

Greetings! Sorry, can't help you with the Ursakar Creed one. I'm guessing he simply should have the Leadership special rule. I can provide a little bit of relief on the Commissar question, though. I can't see how you're not using any:

"Infantry Platoons, nor Armoured Fist Squads, nor Conscript Platoons. I also have no Stormtrooper Squads."

since you need to take Troops in your army. So a minimal legal army would be:

HQ, Infantry platoon (3 units,) and say, Armoured Fist. That's at least 5 units to which you can add Commissars. Now, you could be taking the Grenadiers option, in which case your minimal Troops could be Stormtroopers, which yields you 3 units to add Commissars to, and leads us back to the same problem (too few units, too many Commissars.) I don't have an answer for that one. But assuming you're taking at least one Infantry Platoon, you should be ok. Good gaming!

Actually, you can have two grenadier squads, which technically aren't stormtroopers, but even if you count them as stormtroopers, you only have a place for three commisars.

Well, that wasn't much help!  Just kidding. But the army I have in mind is legal, and has none of the FOC choices I listed above. So I have four Commissars with no one to attach them to. What happens?

Anyone else want to give it a shot?

So what happens to the other two? Can I place them in any other units (i.e. Ratlings, Rough Riders, etc.)? Are they suddenly ICs? Or do I just double up? So I'd have five Commissars in that one HQ Command Squad? Any ideas?

In such a build, the other two commissars are summarily executed by the first 3 commissars, before the first turn!

Seriously though, I think the most reasonable interpretation is: if you have no valid unit to which you can attach an advisor, then you can't take the advisor.

As SL said, ya need a valid unit for them to "advise". No unit means no advisor.

Well, I checked my IG Codex and it looks like you guys were right. Thanks for the replies. I really should learn to double-check my books before posting. The Advisors rule does clearly state that Commissars are applied to certain units and that unattached Advisors may not be used.

Anyone got any other answers for Q1, or is Creed really that useless?

No, you are completely right by the RAW. Although Kell's rules do say:

"Although nominally a sergeant, Kell has all the privelages of being an Officer, including the Command special rule."

Now, there is no 'Command' special rule, so I'm guesing at the time of writing 'Command' was the 'Leadership' special rule. Who knows, perhaps Creed was supposed to have it as well but they sure didn't write it that way.

Either way, they're still a pretty good deal for 125 points total.
