Hi there,

Last weekend I managed to pick up my tokenset for the circle. (Anybody who thinks that this is a bit late, I live in  the netherlands / europe)

As any hordesplayer will know, privateer has taken over the tokenmanufacturing for Hordes.

I really wished they had not.

The tokenset consists of a sheet with 36 carton markers and a load of  "shuriken"shaped clear plastic tokens in two sizes small ones (fury points) and larger ones (made for holding the carton markers??).

Lacking any form of manual I punched out some of the tokens first, yes they fit inside the larger markers but which way is up ? Then I discovered that the paperbacking on the markers is intended to let loose, they are adhesive (sticky)

So 36 markers fit into the 36 larger ones, leaving us with 36 plastic/cardboard tokens.

How are these tokens organised,

  • At least they have markers for all the warlocks and their spells.
  • There are some markers for the differerent Animus(sus?)
  • Heart , rage and knockdown tokens
  • Tokens for the druids of Oberos spell effects
  • A the offering token.

What where they thinking ?

Tokens are meant for remembering things that are easy to forget during the Battle, so do they really think that 2 rage tokens are enough ? also 3 heart tokens (used by the Tharn ravagers) is a little to less. A useless token for the offering (lord of the feast) when this is played this is an instant effect, and the reminder is that the figurre is removed. What about leaving tokens out to remind us what warpeffect the warpwolf has chosen (+2S, +2mov etc.), Will Kara really cast rager only once per turn ?

And the the construction: The shuriken shaped plastic thingies ar really sharp, and then the rather childish combination of cardboard and plastic.  (Mine got sealed with a layer of water effect from GW, I know from long experience what softdrinks can do to your cardboard markers)

If I have to choose between with all a load of tokens (72 in fact) made of cheap plastic like a retro GW idea of cardboard markers  or  the GF9 tokens I'll pick the latter anytime.

Thanks for the review! I am quite happy with my gf9 tokens so I surely won´t pick up a set of these tokensets after this review.

I am curious as to how these differ from the "prototypes" they had for sale at GenCon last August. I picked some up there, and I was wondering if they had changed since then, have they?

I'll try to describe the tokens (Circle) for you.

Fury markers:

Imagine a cone off clear plastic about 5 mm dia and 4 mm high, on te bottom of the cone 3 sawtooth blades about 2 mm stick out (like the cogwheel on your bike, when worn down) 36 of these, in a greenish transparant plastic.

36 (15 if you read the description on the bag) effect markers. about 1 cm diameter with an rim and previously mentioned blades sticking out. The center (the stuff surronded by the rim) will accept the cardboard sticky round cardboard token.

They weigh about nothing, I accidently launch one by blowing some dust from a model. The plastic reminds me of the awfull cheap plastic kits from behind the Iron-curtain several years ago. (It makes the same annoying tinkling noise)

There is one bonus, when one drops to the floor, put off your shoes and socks and start hopping around. When the hopping becomes painfull you'll have found it.

And they make nice dark eldar / necron landmines

I cannot agree more. I started a thread much like this on the privateer press forums. Fanboys popped up left right and center, and eventually started to say I was insulting THEM, not the tokens.

Strange old fanboys.

I saw these in use the other day. In theory it?s a nice idea to get tokens for a whole faction for not much more money than GF9?s sets, which only cover a single caster. I also like how the Fury tokens are made to be stacked.

But the design seems kind of poor otherwise. The plastic is really light and brittle, and the way they?re molded with the bottom surface totally flat, they?re a serious pain to pick up when they?re lying flush on the table. By comparison I have two caster token sets for Warmachine, and I?m really happy with them. I occasionally find myself wishing I had more Corrosion markers, but that?s the only complaint I could possibly make.

The only changes are that there is now a solid back to the counters and the cardboard centres now have an adhesive back that you can use to affix them to the plastic counters.

Lacking any form of manual ...
You need a manual to tell you that you need to punch out cardboard counters?

First law of murphy:

If anything can go wrong it will go wrong.

The markers can be put in the correspending token two ways( face up face down), I was fiddeling with the positioning when I noticed that the back has to come off (and reveal the sticky side) making the question of placing the marker rather obvious. Just telling that there are 36 adhesive markers or showing an example on the front would have solved any issues there.

And the fury stacks, the cones kind of fit into each other making a sort of pile.

I have to agree.

The Privateer Press Hordes token sets are really lame. They're overengineered and they don't seem like they've been designed for the gaming table. Much more form over function. I was really disappointed with them.

I love the Gale Force 9 Warmachine ones. Too bad they didn't get the license.

I don't like them and won't pick them up. I even stated that on the PP boards. Now, I'm not going to bash someone who likes them, but I do wish they would let GF9 produce thier own.

All problems can be solved with proper use of a high powered rifle and a water tower

I agree. I won't pick them up either. They seem like a middle of the road product that wasn't necessary given the low end idea of make your own counters or the higher end product of GF9 tokens. IMHO, the first true failure from Privateer.

I mostly lurk, its just safer that way. Oh but the things I have read....
