I can say from expierence, a large case with no dividers works, but expect damage to your vehicles as they shift in transport.

"I went into a hobby-shop to play m'self a game,
The 'ouse Guru 'e up an' sez "The Guard is weak and lame!"
The Chaos gits around the shelves they laughed and snickered in my face,
I outs into the street again an' grabbed my figure-case."
Oh it's "Angels this" an' "Space-wolves that", and "Guardsmen, go away!";
But it's "Thank you for the ordnance" when the Guard begins to play,
O it's "LOOK AT ALL THE ORDNANCE!" when the Guard begins to play.."

I think the point here is a transport that prevents any damage to said vehicles while in transit. During 3rd ed days, I used to run mechanized marines that included 2x rhinos, 2x razorbacks, 2-3 land speeders, and any combination of 3x vindicators and 2x whirlies, all custom conversions and/or scratchbuilds with lots of fiddly greeblies I was keen to not break when travelling about Northern Virginia's traffic snarled and road rage infested highways. To tote all this around I used what I called the "ghetto case", and is it ever ghetto. It was basically an 18" wide x 18' long x 12" high box with a sheet at the bottom, which the vehicles were laid out on. I then covered them with enough foam packing peanuts and then, using a couple plastic bags * also filled with foam packing peanuts, filling the remaining space snuggly (but not to tight) and then taped or tied the box shut. This set up survived several falls and countless trips to various LFGS without ever damaging any of the contents. Ghetto, but it worked and worked well. Rest of the miniatures were carried around in figure cases. *The plastic bags were so I could quickly remove the packing material without getting it all over the store/home every time I needed access to the models.

I've seen the large cardboard box filled with packing peanuts before. It was safe and economical.

Repeat after me. They are not "pistol cases." They are foam filled "utility transport boxes" for camera equipment and other delicate items (you can get similar cases at the Container Store as a utility case but at a higher price).

I think it depends on your models. If you have a lot of breakable bitz like improved coms with the long antenna and stuff like that, you'll want to go with something more form fitting. But if you aren't worried about that, I'd suggest a rifle case. I got one from K-mart for $15 and I can fit a 2000 pt empire army in it.. it's great for people, but I think tanks would work great too. It's full of egg carton style foam, you can just line your tanks up straight across (without the top cannons) and then you'll still have room to fit the cannons in too.
I don't have that many tanks but I do have a tank heavy army, I just ordered up the army transport motor pool case, seems to be designed for big models and comes with their bigger trays. I already have plenty of infantry sized trays from my regular case that I can easily just reuse.

Just thought I'd mention, my motor pool army transport arrived today, it's great. You would easily be able to fit your armored company in one, I'm sure. If you have russes without sponsons, you should have no problem fitting them on their side in the 4" tray (with the top guns off) .. or with sponsons you can fit 2 sitting on their treads with room left over for the top turrets. the 4" tray is great, you can also fit like 4 chimeras on their side in one, or 2 basilisks on their side also. Rhinos fit perfectly that way also. If you want to sit em on their treads instead, you'll need the 4" one for a basilisk because of the gun shield, and then you can only fit one.. and chimeras on their treads the most you can fit is 3
but generally, it would be a good investment for a tank army.. You can order just the case itself and the trays seperate too (for that matter, you can order any of their cases seperately if you want to create your own..)
