I bet this topic has been up here a million times but after a brief search I could find nothing on it.  Im just curious if anyone has read anything like that (i did read something where they said that a 40K, MMORPG was not currently in the works) but did anyone read anything else for or against it?

I hope that Warhammer online does GREAT because maybe that will prompt a 40K MMO.....im not sure if I am going to play WHO but im really pulling for it.

A 40K MMO done right could be the most addicting thing out there! (i stress the "done right' part)

Ahhh well....any thoughts?

Nope, no news of anything like this whatsoever. Just WAR. Maybe if that
does well, who knows?

Im not sure which is more popular (Warhammer fantasy battle, or 40K) but around here there are quite a few 40K players (loosing some to Warmachine) and ive not met a fantasy player in ages.  I just think that a 40K MMO would be a huge success (again, IF done right).

Well, the Fantasy genre gathers more appeal than the science-fiction one does for
its MMORPGs.

Fantasy:
EQ & EQ2
Ultima
Dark Ages of Camelot
World of Warcraft

Science-fiction:
EVE Online
Anarchy Online
Matrix Online (Oh god, don't touch this one!)
Star Wars Galaxies (run as fast as you can!)
City of Heroes

I don't know what it is about fantasy that lends itself to Fantasy. Perhaps a sword +1
makes more sense to gamers than a blaster +1? Anyway, the fact remains that no one
has yet dared license a 40k MMORPG.

Besides. Everyone would want to be a Space Marine.

A solid first person 40k shooter that had online team deathmatches would be so incredibly awesome.  It would be great if you could play as a trooper of any race.  It would rule to have imperial guard with tanks and infantry swarming willy nilly towards Eldar grav tanks and Guardians.  I'm imagining something like call of duty, but with power armor and close combat action thrown in as well.  If you could pilot the vehicles and operate heavy weapons I would buy the game and play it until my eyes bled.

Its too bad Fire Warrior was crap.  A new 40k 1st person shooter would be a welcome addition.

not everyone would want to be a space marine. i know i would prefer straight up human. besides roleplaying and futuristic space don't really play well in my opinion. i think the game would have to be based around the fps genre of games. such as america's army, battlefield, etc. or even better something based around a game like world war 2 online. where it's just a large map with areas controlled by opposiing sides and the map changes based on battles fought in certain towns.

that way you can have something like an armageddon style campaign based game. and have nearly every race represented in game. or even a multi- world campaign where you can hop on your local transport ship and help reinforce another planet.

i think there is a lot of potential for a 40k based massively played online game.

as i said just my 2 cents.

I certainly wouldn't.

Probably an Eldar Ranger, in Halo my prefered method of killing is with a Ghost and running people down. Bring on the Jetbike.

Church: So it is a sword, It just happens to function like a key in very specific situations.
Caboose: Or it's a key all the time, and when you stick it in people, it unlocks their death.

Yea I think that the distribution of what people played would be much like what armies people play.  There would be a lot of marines yes...but still a ton of everything else, just like the population of the game now.

I think that the FPS idea is great but the MMO is totally possible to.  Who wouldnt want to start out as some small tribesman and then go through your recruitment into a space marine legion!....then become a scout hoping some day to attain your black carapace and power armor.  Then you can aspire to gain a power weapon or even a plasma pistol.....choose to travel the path of an assault marine or a heavy weapon guy.  One day gain enough renown to wear your own suit of Terminator armor....the possibilities are limitless!!!

That same scenario can be played out into any of the armies.  Eldar would aspire to be exarchs of whatever aspect they want or a psycher....IG learning which Tank you wanna roll around in....Chaos which god do you wanna follow....Tau what kind of mech suit do you wanna beat some ass in....it is limitless....the game could be HUGE with an unending amout of possiblities!

I want to see it done, but I dont think they can possibly do it right or even come close to the proper "scope" of how massive the game should feel.  *shrug*....Ill keep dreaming.

The problem with players as space marine in an MMORPG is that there's no way to justify random sapce marines wandering around killing stuff. Space Marines deploy as companies and chapters, blow the crap outta stuff, then go and pray alot and return home to pray some more. There's few that get to wander around doing whatever they please (traitors and heretics not withstanding).

A 40k MMORPG would work great around inquisitors and rogue traders. That way there's no super classes to have to balance (just look at how much trouble SWG had with balancing Jedi with the cannon).

Iorek: "Snoogums, you're right. Your arguments are irrelevant, and they sure as heck aren't going away."

TBH FPS might not work.

I want a 40k MMO, but the best way to have a Sci-Fi MMO is space combat and while i love the GW space combat, it truely is lacking.

The only way I could possibly forsee a 40K MMO is a really really big planet caught in a warp storm and 3 factions were vying for power, forces of good, evil and anarchy.

That way you could start with IG,WH/DH,SM vs Chaos, Traitor IG vs Orks. Expansions could throw in tau/eldar and nids

This would just be the perfect time for GW to further the 40K storyline.  I know its been said a million times and some people have the narrow minded view that it would be a BAD idea to do anything that actually causes a change in the story but why not!  Let Abaddon smash through Cadia...let the entire imperium fall under a curtain of chaotic darkness....and let what is left of those loyal to the emperor fight on in the face of impossible odds.

Then you have small groups of marines, possibly even marines working totally lone that are moving through the galaxy working toward the redemption of the imperium!  I mean just let you imagination run wild.....this CAN work..it should happen it would be amazing!!

I cant imagine how much I would love the feel of a 40K MMO where as a loyalist marine you know that anywhere you go there is a good chance you are going to run into your hated adversaries and be forced to fight and probably die or run to live another day and come back with a bigger gun!

Im just saying have an open mind about it....there is NO possible way you can make a statement that would totally destroy all the options for a way that this game could work.

I don't think anybody here would argue AGAINST an advance in storyline....

I think I had a post somewhere else about how GW should advance the story and got about 50% resistance to an advance....people afraid of change.

I've always said that the GW MMO should be a 40k era one. Hell, they could do a necromunda or inquisitor one if it can down to it.

But another bow and arrow MMO? Not needed right now.

All problems can be solved with proper use of a high powered rifle and a water tower

FPS would be the way to go, since developers/publishers seem totally adverse to any model that is not sword-and-sorcery, but will go with some crazy RTS and FPS concepts. And it would probably be buggy and have stupid exploits like jumping Tau railgun headshots, hacks, and physics issues. But you could shoot another player in the face with a bolter, so its all good.

I fully agree that a WELL DONE 40K FPS is long over due but I still stay that that a WELL DONE 40K MMO would be be best thing out there right now.  The possibilities for the game are limitless and where they could go with it is also limitless.

Imagine....the inevitable "Eye of Terror, Warhammer 40K online RPG expansion pack"  Travel deep into the eye of terror and face off against Abaddon himself!

Climb aboard a space hulk and see what happened to the poor bastards that were sucked into warp space and victimized by unimaginable darkness.....but be weary of what may still lurk aboard her!

Visit the Tau worlds and decide if you will work together or make war with them.....

Speak with a Farseer and follow their direction or fight them to the death....

I know Im just dreaming and this is never going to happen but if it ever did....wow.

Imagine something with that scope and the looks of say....Gears of War.

Just my 2 cents...

Battlefield 2142 => Battlefield 40 000

Far better, and most likely far more profitable concept than a MMO. I think the problem with sci-fi MMOs is their huge scale, with the need for dozens of planets at least, each of which presents an environment easily as large as a normal fantasy MMO. EVE solved this problem by simply not having any planetary landings, but I can't quite imagine how each planet in a 40-planet sci-fi MMO can be as detailed as the single world often used in Fantasy MMOs.
