Buttons Should Be Brass, Not Gold!

This might be old news: I was in my local GW yesterday and was pawing through their most recent super-bitz catalogue. Other than noting the strange choice of archive bitz: i.e. Goff Rockerz but no Classic Noisemarine... something caught my eye. Models were marked with "Limited Quantity". The staffer called GW Canada direct services and apparently the deal with these are: "We made a full run of these models and then we destroyed the moulds. So once they run out, there won't be anymore." Maybe its just me, but this seems absolutely assinine especially when some of the affected models are very new sculpts (and fantastic ones too) - (Off the top of my head...) the discontinued range includes: Imperial Fists Captain Lysander Typhus, Herald of Nurgle Throne of Judgement Wood Elf Wardancer Lord Wood Elf Lord with Great Weapon

Well no one said that GW was the smartest company in the world. Most likely I put it too trying to drive sales. Its like the slave girls on the Dark Eldar Raider can't be bit order so you have to buy the Raider. Just how many Raider do the Have with the Slave girls just sitting collection dust?

"We made a full run of these models and then we destroyed the moulds. So once they run out, there won't be anymore."
The quote seems impressive, but might be much less so if you consider the amount of miniatures a single mould can cast.
IMHO, they just cast miniatures... until mould were worn out. Then they destroyed them, plain and simple. What to do with a used mould anyway? Having a bunch of miniatures ready to sell instead is a far more efficient space management.
I guess we'll see plenty of Lysanders for years to come. Even GW still has stocks! And after that, there's the second hand market.
Heck, I'm still buying Man O'War miniatures on Ebay...

Just because they destroyed the moulds, doesn't mean they destroyed the masters, which they can make new moulds from. It if they destroy the masters that is the point of no return (though you could take a production mini and recast it).

sounds like the staffer was pulling your leg talked to the boys at DS, they said the "limited availability" means that the Items you see that next to are complete items (boxed sets, full blisters etc.) when they run out of the boxes / blisters, you'll get them as the clamshell loose bitz, no fancy packaging.

Well... that seems to make sense... though, the way GW has been going recently, the "joke" response isn't so unbelievable either.

The original answer DS gave is just more proof of how ignorant most of the non-UK staffers are to what really happens with GW.

I think this actually might be a smart move for GW. Step 1: Destroy all moulds and masters. Step 2: Quadruple prices. Step 3: Profit! Brilliant!

Yep, Paranoia XP. I remember the original fondly as the most fun one could have with paper & pencil that didn't involve naked chicks..
