Hello everyone,

In this newsletter Forge World`s 2007 is off to a flying start with some great new aircraft for Aeronautica Imperialis (sorry the pun was mandatory), more deadly tanks for the Death Korps, and the arrival of the long-awaited Death Korps of Krieg Command Squad.

All of the new models in this newsletter are available to pre-order now on our Online Store for release commencing the 29th of January.

<lb:description>Our first new release this newsletter is the Death Korps of Krieg Command Squad. This fantastic new squad is intended as a platoon level command unit and features a junior officer with powersword and laspistol, a vox-operator, two Command Squad special weapons troopers (one with a plasma gun, one with a melta), and a standard bearer. Frankly I don`t need wax lyrical on these models, the quality and detail of them is everything you`ve come to expect from our Death Korps range, and should be readily apparent from these pictures. </lb:description>

This command squad is far from the last thing we have planned for the Death Korps, the near future will see both a HQ Command Squad and the Death Riders, with more to follow in what is perhaps already the most varied and extensive Imperial Guard range now available. One other thing to mention; you`ll note the inclusion of a piece of brass rod on the standard bearer in our new Command Squad (here), this is included when you purchase the models. In fact these rods will turn up in many of our future products (as banner polls, lance shafts etc) as we think they add greatly to the overall quality and ease of modelling.

<lb:description>Also now available for pre-order are a further two models in our new Death Korps of Krieg Tank range, the Death Korps of Krieg Mars Alpha Pattern Leman Russ Exterminator and Executioner. These new variants are heavily modified to conquer the most environmentally hazardous warzones and navigate the most blasted of landscapes, with trench rails and filtration systems. These kits also come with Krieg tank commanders and pintle heavy stubbers. </lb:description>

On the battlefield both of these tanks make excellent hunter-killers in Warhammer 40K, both able to fire full volleys on the move. Depending on their configuration you can also fit them to excel at scything down enemy infantry or to swiftly deal with the threat of light vehicle squadrons. In particular the Executioner`s Plasma Destroyer cannon will make a mockery of `high-save` enemies such as power-armoured troops, while the Exterminator`s potential for sheer volume of fire is not to be underestimated.

<lb:prodname>Death From Above
</lb:prodname>
<lb:prodname>Aeronautica Imperialis, our new game of savage air war the 41st millennium was released on the 2nd of January and is already proving to be a success. Hot on its heels are two brand new aircraft models with which to battle for the skies, the Space Marine Thunderhawk Gunship and the Eldar Phoenix.
These new models have a level of detail and faithfulness to their 40K counterparts that`s simply amazing. The real jewel in our crown here for me is the Thunderhawk Gunship model. I first saw one a while ago during development, and getting hold of one now I`m still struck just by how cool it looks and the incredible accuracy Darren has achieved, -every single line and detail is on there. It`s also pretty damn big in relation to the other flyers (as indeed it should be), in fact its 4 inches (10cm) long with a 3 inch (8.8cm) wingspan, and sits 1 inches (3.8cm) tall from landing gear to tail plane. It`s such a lovely model in fact that even if you never play a game of Aeronautica (and why not?) you`re probably going to want one anyway, either as a collector or as a Space Marine player, just to own and paint in your favourite chapters colours.
The iconic Thunderhawk is a real brute in Aeronautica; relatively slow but durable and heavily armed, its able to engage enemies at all ranges as well as pound ground targets to rubble and land troops in assault scenarios. The Phoenix on the other hand is a consummate all-rounder, excelling equally as an interceptor and strike craft, with the signature Eldar strengths of high-speed and supreme manoeuvrability matched to a powerful weapons array.
Look for more Aeronautica Imperialis releases in future newsletters. You can find out more about our exciting new air combat game Here.

</lb:prodname>A Date For the Diary
On the 1st of April 2007, we`ll be having our first ever Forge World Open Day event at Warhammer World in Nottingham, -so mark that one on your calendars! More details on this will be forthcoming in future newsletters.

DKoK: Like the Standard Bearer and the tanks are interesting - I prefer the Chimera-like frontal weapons arrangement, rather than the traditional, WW1-type on the Leman Russ.

AI: I thought the Thunderhawk's wings were at a shallow angle to the body, not horizontal? And is AI epic scale?

AI is Epic Scale.

Does anyone know if FW makes the tank in the picture of the Gorgon on page 11 in the latest White Dwarf? It's a Russ with a wide turret and wider tracks. Looks cool.

While the Executioner's plasma cannon makes a mockery of marine power armor, the marine's lascannons tend to make a mockery of the Executioner. None the less it's very very cool tank, if a bit of a finess unit.

The AI game looks like it could be totally sweet. Expensive as all get out though.

Well I just checked and they're only selling the new turrets as part of complete kits with the plastic tank, alpha pattern body, a tank commander, trench rail mod AND filter. It's fifty flipping pounds. There's no way I'm paying that when I only want the turret. I'll just paint something else. FW continues to lose sales to me by not offering conversion kits instead of "complete kits". I don't need more GW plastic and I refuse to pay retail price for more!

I just got the rules and my Flyers from forgeworld today, and reading through the rules, this game is sweet.  The rules look to be far more simple and elegant than those of Battlefleet Gothic, and seem to leave less questions in my mind.  It think it will be "plane" old fun.

I don't think it's going to be too expensive as far as games go.  The preface says it's designed for games of 2-12 aircraft per side where one or two will take an hour to play, and larger ones several.  I think most folks could have fun on this one with about 8 aircraft for probably only $100 US.

It would be awesome to be able to fight out high altitude bomber raids w/intercept - escort fighting.  I hope there are rules for that sort of thing.

I've got a lot of Imperal Navy stuff from FW already, so I guess I could start up at any time. Damn, those Thunderhawks are pricy at $36 a pop. High FW price + f'ing boned internation exchange rate = sad Breotan.

It's interesting to see that they have standards in platoon level command squads.

If you look at the normal squads though your notice that theres no vox operators. Maybe this platoon level standard replaces the need for a vox, and has some alternate rules affect on the platoons. Ie they don't need to use the generals Ld but only need to see the regimental colours to fill them with determination.

On the models though they are fantastic! I preordered a squad as soon as I saw them. The junior officer is great I cant wait to see the Heroic Senior Officer! Or the Commissars they are going to be fantastic!

Some questions for those who own the Aeronautica rules.

Do you need a hex grid to play it?

What size table?

Is it stand alone, or just added rules for epic?

Does it taste like chicken?

The command squad is a very good example of FW philosophy. It looks awesome, but is illegal in game terms (at least as a platoon command and not a command HQ) and comes with really unhelpful weapons options.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

I beg to differ.

How are these unuseful weapon options? Meltas and Plasma are my favorite special weapons and from both a gaming and background viewpoint I think it's only appropriate to have such specialist weapons in the hands of an experienced veteran and a member of an officers personal staff.

Leave grenade launchers and flamers to the rank and file.

The banner is useful for two reasons. Firstly Its a lovely model that can be used (regardless of rules) as a characterful and interesting addition to a platoon. Background states that platoons are led by banners and given the very WW nature of Kreig unitsI think this is only too appropriate. Also from a rules point of view we have no idea what FW will do with IA5. They may have these in platoons for very SPECFIC reasons. Are Elysians just grenadiers with Valkyries? No they aren't they are a very different unit based around different rules and vehciles to standard Codex imperial Guard.

Medics... Who needs them? I mean really? In a platoon HQ they aren't that useful and they waste points that are better spent elsewhere. If you really wanted one you could also easily convert it.

If having dynamic, interesting, and varied units is a bad thing then let the world be terrible. Whats the alternative? Codex guard doctrines? Quite frankly they are awful and very limited.

No Hex Grid.  The bases are hex for convinience of showing firing arcs.  Interestingly enough, the bases are manufactured by Sabertooth Games, each one is stamped with that on the bottom.

4x6 Tables are referenced every now and then in the rules, but I imagine any size table will do.

Stand-alone, and a brilliant stand alone might I add!

I'd say it tastes remarkably similar to a slow roasted cornish game hen, so yes.

Also, for anyone curious about the maneuver cards here's the deal.  An aircraft moves straight and level 2" for every point of speed.  To turn, climb or descend, you play a maneuver card (determined before the start of the turn) on the table by lining up the arrow on the card with the arrow on the AI base.  You then move the base to the arrow on the other side of the card pointing in the direction indicated and then finish off any unused movement.  Low maneuver aircraft like Marauders and Thunderhawks are restricted to 4 maneuvers while Very High rated aircraft like Eldar Nightwings and Lightnings can use all 10.

I have to agree on the unhelpful weapons options. A PG and MG? Are you kidding me? Why would you put these wepons in the same squad? This is not efficient. For the prices, we should be entitled to buy exactly what we plan to use. You can be happy with a PG and MG. I'd choose 4 PGs thank you very much.

Hmm sounds suspiciously like other flight games I have played ala Crimson Skies, etc.

Thats ok though, that system is smooth.
