Mastering Non-Metallic Metal

For chips / rust patches on dark surfaces, I tend to do the chipping with a lighter or contrasting "undercoat" and then add the metal/rust within that area, leaving a thin line of undercoat, to give the contrast as a sort of halo around the rust patches.

@Cam- Thanks buddy! ofc, I only see that remnant of a mold line NOW that it's posted, not during the 20+ hours spent staring at them while painting
@Theo - Thanks Theo! At one time, the Ratskins were among the best paint job I'd ever done. Perhaps If I practice enough, I can finally paint the rest of the old metal gangs I've hoarded al lthese years. I've been watching painters stream on twitch, and I'm amazed by the general lack of skill these young whippersnappers have with metal models. They don't know how to even pin a metal model. Of course, they are amazing painters though. As long as we progress

@Theo thanks! You know better if I have Primaris Marines on this bench, it'll be to prove that they could be converted from their static poses with a minimum of hobby effort. But I'm sure others will make that demonstration better than I could. I may convert a Land Raider or one of their 100 plastic air force kits for Guard/Navy use, just because I can. Thanks Cam! I'm 100% unhappy with the skin tone, it just went on rough (not smooth) from the beginning. I tried to turn my mess into a sort of blemished skin I conveniently imagined Ogryns might have, but I may just be jaded by the Studio/White Dwarf paintjobs I'm brainwashed by.

That IS a possibility too Vik. I think my primer coat got a little wonky for whatever reason, I just could not get a smooth coat, and there are MANY coats of paint on that skin, perhaps too many. meh. Not my finest work, but not my last either. This is something I could totally use a skill boost in.

Haha Vik- me too. At first, I think I had too much pressure, the paint was pooling and splattering, I think some of these pools got thicker as I tried to smooth the rest out to match. I'm in a basement with a dehumidifier running, so it wasn't the dreaded bubbles, everything just ended up chalky, despite my super thin coats. I dunno. I have those OOP metal Escher and Delaque gangs to paint and I dont want that same problem.

Don't really see your prob bud. They are Ogryn....you know ogre-ish, dirty smelly, gross, not baby smooth soft clean. Throw some tattoos on them and the eye will never see your terrible paintwork.
No honestly had a good look in the gallery and they look fine bud, blemished skin is cool. I agree you will not want that on the Eschers, but you will sort it. I am no expert and not even gifted with the airbrush do da, but is it a result of being over keen to paint after cleaning the models? Maybe a bit of residue, tainted the primer coat?
Jeez these artists, complaining because their bloody perfect skin tones and models aren't happy ever! mine are happy to be vaguely pink mate!

If chalkiness is the issue, have you considered Lahmian medium? That miught help out by adjusting the drying time. Oh, and check the consistency of your paint.

I was considering doing some salt weathering on some terrain, what's your process again? Is it just basecoat rust, hairspray, salt to taste and then new basecoat, scrub away salt after its dry and then as extra weathering?

Naa, just rust basecoat, then I mixed some regular table salt with some larger, Kosher salt. Haphazardly brushed water on the barrels, then rolled them in salt. I sprayed the first coat of yellow last night, I thought it needed another, so that's where it's at.
