Hiya guys!  Finally got my account activated, been looking at eye candy on Dakka for a little while now and thought I'd add a little of my own for everyone to look at!

I've been working on a defiler conversion, to the upright position, and after many long arduous days of wrestling with bits, card, rod, chains and creative block, I've come about to the end of the journey with a massive beast of chaosy madness!

Here she be, lemme know what you think:

And from the top:

Some of you painters and artists out there might be able to help me with my colour scheme, too, if you feel charitable enough!

I am thinking going with an Iron Warriors type scheme, in black and various metallics, then utilising chevrons on the armour plates on the arms and legs and maybe one or two other places.  That's about as far as I've gotten and am having difficulty thinking beyond that.  If anyone has any thoughts on improvements or  a better more suitable scheme, lemme know!

BTW, this model is more for display, as I don't own a chaos army....

[edit] Hmmm interface is a bit different, but I think I got it now....

I want one.... really I want this one. As I play deathguard I suggest well nurgle themes :-) Though I wonder what a Tzeetch color scheme might look like? It looks like its partially painted already? What did you make it out of, I see defiler parts all over.

I can see Undivided here too, How big is it could it be used as Scout Titan??

It's 7 1/2 inches tall, from bottom of base to top of havoc launcher. Predominantly defiler parts, with added Dark eldar spikey bits, chains, wiring and tube and stuff. I've also used the penitent pilot out of a penitent engine as the central daemonhost, and a number of curved spikey bits pieces. There's even a dreadnaught ccw in there too. Lotsa bits, lotsa scratchbuild.

I started out nurgle in mind, once I got partway through I started thinking Hellraiser meets Event Horizon and that's the main direction it's gone in.

As to paintjob, the main thing I have decided on (and it's really minor) is that it is going to be a lava base.  It appears partially painted because the defiler I used was one that I got when I first started back into the hobby after years of not doing it.  I'd painted it up black and white, and after an accident or something - don't remember-it got broken.  So I disassembled it and left it sitting around until I decided to build this one.

How big is a scout titan, anyway?

Glad you guys like it!

That's pretty damn cool right there. I always wanted to do an Ork Stompa using the Defiler, but now I may have to change my mind.

I think I've found the kind of colour scheme I'll use.  This one is using metallics and non metallics as well as cool rust effects and the like.  Sorta what I had in mind, it'll work well I think.

wow there is alot going on with that big boy. like your paint choice, the only thing I would suggest before you start painting is to take one more look at the legs, or at least the thigh area, as it looks a bit small for all the mass in his upper body. Dont get me wrong you did a great job I just things some extra plates or something to beef if the legs would go a long way with him. Nice work all and all.

Go with a Iron Warriors paint style. I look at it and all that comes to mind is something out of a Hellraiser movie. All black, drippy-with-God-knows-what and evil like.

Now after watching the movie Virus it looks more and more like one of those critters in the movie If you just add a little green stuff here and there for Flesh and sine. It would look like Huge Obliterator(sp)/ Defiler fitting in the Iron warrior theme Big time

Amongst the Stars, In the Night

That thing is simply awesome. Fantastic conversion and I think the varying shades of grey, metallics and yellow caution striping plus heavy weathering and rust will be a fine, fine color scheme for it.

I also agree with the suggestion that you need to beef up the legs a bit. As is they look a little weedy compared to the heavily armored awesomeness elsewhere. This can almost certainly done without tearing up the hard work already done, you just need to find a way to put in more gubbins, possibly additional hydraulic tubing/cabling and armoring. Again, that's a great conversion.

You hit the nail on the head direct with that one.  Absolutely outstanding.

Oh, and as another poster said, mabey a second look at the thighs.  Little beefier, pistons or something.

For design and construction on this, I give you tens across the board.

Cool guys, I'll have a look at the legs again tomorrow. I've got plenty of stuff to work with so just a bit more and then the undercoat goes on! I already made a couple of shock absorber type pistons so I think I'll work those into the legs as well. They ought to look pretty sweet.

At least I can undercoat the top half and the base, that's the main thing, I've got some work I can start on in the painting division at least after I finish with the legs!

As to the base, it's all finished and ready to paint. I ended up using tapioca balls and ball headed map pins cut up fo the lava bubbles, then I glued them in place and put about 4 thick layers of PVA (elmers for you Americans!) over the top of that and it quite nicely gives me the effect I wanted. Now it's undercoated and waiting to dry.

jaw drops down. awsome work you did there, looks almost more like a titan then a heavy support unit. I think that Iron Warrior colours would look great on it, but it's never too late to start Death Guard

It's a bit busy for my tastes, but it's still amazing. Kudos.

Yeah, you are right, it is very busy. It's the busiest model I've put together, but I like how it's turned out. The toughest thing is, when there are extra bits I think I need to work on, whether I really should do it or not, because it's already up there in the business stakes!

Anyhoo - here are some pics of the base so far. I hoping someone can give me some ideas on improvement. It's bugging me coz I am having SOOOOO much trouble getting smooth transitions between the black through yellow. Yellow sucks to transition.

I went and got some Jo Sonja Glaze medium this arvo, so tomorrow I'll see if that helps me do better!

I'm not entirely sure if I like the method I used for the lava. Don't know if I should try for a broader colour spread or keep the little "hotstreak" look or not. I'm quite happy with the melting Rhino, but think maybe I could define it better, or if you guys can think of something else I can do to help make it look hot and dissolving?

Hi Lemming

Great stuff! I'd say with the rhino why not add some more weatheirng and burn marks, right now it looks a little clean. Blackening and burn marks around the areas that are in direct contact with the lava would be good. You could also add gloss varnish to certain areas on the rhinos paint work to make it look like its melting the paint and metal.

I think the base is nicely done and the lighting effect on the side of the rhino from the lava is very good.

What did you use for the cabling on the defiler? The metal wire is guitar wire i guess? Looks great and it very characteful.

Thanks dude! I was thinking of those extras, so it's good you mention it. Its still WIP because I need to continue some more to tidy up the lava, it looks nice inthe pics but IRL it's pretty rough, the edges are too coarse. I'm trying to blend it a bit smoother.

That gloss idea is pretty cool. I was wondering how I might use gloss to help enhance the molten effect of the lava but that's a great idea.

The cabling on the defiler is made from numous articles - guitar and bass strings (1guage from the guitar for thinner areas and 1 guage from the bass for the thicker cables) fishing line, whipper snipper line (edge trimmer), electrical wiring of a couple of guages, thin solder wire and steel wire, depending on the effect I wanted determined what type of wire I used. The hydraulic pistons are just a couple of sizes of plastic tubing stuck inside one another and the couplings are just square tube cut and glued in place.

Here is the latest take on my lava base.  I like it.  I like it a lot more than the other version I did.  This is the pic of it after I dropped the BLOODY THING....and it still looks good.  There's just a bit of cracked lava, so I just need to patch that up.

Well, I must say that this is the lamest, gayest, biggest waste of time that dakka has ever seen ina conversion! Throw this crap away now! Just kidding. Your work is freakin awesome! Like in the true sense of the word. Awesome. It has a nice hulking-mass feel to it that I would imagine Chaos would have. The base is gorgeous as well. Your painting technique is grand. Only thing i would say is that the tracks on the Rhino are a lil statis and do not look like they recess into the track guards instead they are attacked to them. Any thoughts on building up around the tracks where they meet the shroud to give the illusion? Even ifyou do not, it is a wicked groovy model and top notch!

Yeah, I think you're right.  Time to quit, I hate it.

Nah, it's not by vindicator, but it's very nice.  It's someone on CMON I can't remember who.

As to the tracks, yeah I've been thinking about that....I don't know what I should do there....probably a good idea to do some plastic card around it to make it look like they do go into something.  It really sucks having these revelations when you're mostly done painting the part you consider revising a bit!!!!

Anyways, I've done the first coats onto the legs, they're mostly undercoated....a few more layers of paint to get to the ready to bash stage....

And here's the painting setup for the upper body, ready for when I am....

Ok, an update after some work on it today.  I got a lot of the metals done and must say, it ended up being too...hmm...not what I'd hoped.  So I decided to take the advice of someone else and added in some yellow plating, sorta like a big industrial machine.  Don't judge it on those panels yet, they'll be weathered and darkened like the yellow in the chevrons yet, so hopefully they'll fit in nicely.  I haven't decided whether I really like the yellow yet (the extra bits I mean) or not, so I'm gonna take it to fruition and see how they work with the rest of the legs.  Should be good, definitely better than not anyways....

And here is the progress on the base, I've deepened the red glow and heightened the heated metals to make it look more like they're superheated to melting point.  I still need to smooth out the blends a bit, but it's coming along pretty nicely.

Any comments, crits and suggestion welcome!

That base is amazing. I'll reserve my judgements on the model till I see it together, balance is so important. I like the rust effect, though maybe there's a tad much?
