After taking my Daemonhunters to a local mini-GT, I decided to create and use a new army, so I created a Godzilla Choir list. This is a 5 game, 2 day tourney.  1850 points.  I just got back from day one.

My list:
2xTyrants (Venom cannon, talons, toxin, senses, extended carapace, scream)

3xCarifexes (2xTL devourers, senses)

22 Spinegaunts
20 Termaguants
2x8 Genestealers (Carapace)

3 Zoeys (Scream, 2xWarp blast, 1xSynapse)
2xCarnifexes (strangler, venom cannon, senses, T7, 5 wounds, 2+ save)

Game one:Alpha Cleanse vs drop pod marine list

Termie librarian (Fear only), 4 termies (AC's) in pod

3xVenerable dreads (AC/HF, x-Armor) in pods

5x8 man Tac Squads (2x2 plasma, 1x2 melta, 2x2 melta+vet w/fist)

I deployed in the middle, with a screen of gaunts in a long line covering my flanks, and terrain in front of me.

I won the roll for 1st turn, and gave it to him.

I moved into the terrain with some monstrous creatures and kept my formation.

Turn 2, he gets both melta squads w/power fists, a plasma squad, and a dread. All land in front of me.

Plasma squad hits 4 times with plasma on one of my heavy support carnies, but fails to wound.  Dread does a small number on a stealer squad, but doesn't kill all of them. (Leaves about 4)

I shoot back, pinning the center squad.  I also do a number on the right-hand squad (The plasma squad, leaving 3 models).  Stealers move up.  Termagaunts on left charge dread, doing nothing, but leaving a long line of strung out gaunts to my left.  The Spinegaunts charge the plasma squad, actually beat it, but it, leaving it with both plasma guns.  It breaks, but gets outside of 6".

His turn 3, everything else besides one of the dreads come down.  Two squads are in my rear.  Librarian and another squad are in front.  He fires, killing a stealer squad, and putting 3 wounds on a heavy support carni.

My turn 3, I move in and fire back.  Heavy support carni fires back at the terminators, hitting and wounding all of them with a strangler shot.  I pick out his librarian for a specific save, and he rolls the one, doing an insta kill.  He then quits the game in a huff.

Game two vs marines (See but don't be seen, and the bp/ccw in the tac squads.)
Gamme Seek and Destroy

He had a 3 wound chappie w/jump pack.  (No termie honors)

big assault squad (2 flamers, vet w/thunder hammer, combat shield)

sniper scout squad w/missile launcher

Scout squad w/bp&ccw.  Vet had a power weapon.

Tac squad (plasma cannon/gun)

Tac squad (bp/ccw, vet w/power weapon, infiltrating)

Dread in pod

4 ML dev squad+techmarine

squadron of 3 tornadoes

On the right flank, he had his bp/ccw scouts and the devs.  Left flank had the rest.

I deployed mostly in the center, behind cover.

Highlights-

I spent two turns pounding his speeders with all my long ranged guns.  They never got to shoot.  Only one of them got to move.

One squad of stealers on the right flank took out the scouts, who help one turn, then moved on to the dev squad.  Tearing up both.  Rolled 5 rends on the charge into the devs.

Obliterated the infiltrating squad.

Elite carni got a shot at the assault squad.  Only things in range were the vet and one of the flamers.  Both died.

Assault squad Assaulted a group of gaunts, wiped them out with no retreat, and then consolidated into a zoey, but were promptly jumped by a stealer squad, spinegaunts, and an elite carni.  After several turns, the caplain was the last to go down.

He dropped his dread close to my heavy carnis, thinking he could assault out of the pod since it was open-topped, but I showed him the rule and let him drop it somewhere else.  Dread eventually got into hth with my HS carni, doing two wounds, but being killed in return.

Only thing left of his at the end was the one TAC squad(At half) and the sniper scout squad (at half I believe).  He killed an elite carni I believe, plus the termagaunts.  Very solid win in my favor.

Game 3-Omega Recon vs Iron Warriors
His list
Lord in termie armor w/Kai gun and power fist.  5 termi retinue w/1 heavy flamer.
6 8 man troop choices-3 lascannons, 2 missile launchers, 1 autocannon.
Defiler w/havok launcher and indirect
Pred w/LC/HB
Basilisk (IF)
5 man Havok squad (4 heavy bolters)

highlights:
He deployed clustered in on flank.

I gave him first turn.

My stealers made a run down the right flank (Where he wasn't).  3 died in one squad to heavy weapons.  Enentually both squads made it to score.

He got his Pred on.Didn't do much (Would have put a wound on a zoey, but was told they weren't playing by the rules as far as coming in on the edges)

Had one of each MC come on.  Glancing 6 on a venom cannon killed the Pred.

He had nothing come on the next turn I believe.

I managed to destroy one of his squads, and put two under half strength.
He killed one of my Tyrants (Two turns in a row, he missed with two lascannons)

He killed my synapse Zoey, and my spinegaunts lurked the whole rest of the game.  The termagaunts were fleeing the entire game towards my tyrants. (Counted as destroyed at the end).

One zoey was fleeing, but rallied.  Other zoey was killed.

Basilisk was destroyed by heavy support carni.  Nice being able to pen something.

Defiler was reduced to a weaponless immobile walker.  Couldn't get the last destroyed result though.

Only one ordnance shot was fired the whole game, and it missed.

Win by 650 points for me.  Had he actually thought about what he was doing, and put his Pred down the right flank as opposed to the cluster of troops, he could have probably killed both stealer squads with it, creating at least a tie, possibly a win for him. ( I need to tell him that tommorow)

Still have two more games tommorow.

Interesting report so far. Not too suprising with the results so far. Funny about the first guy; brings what is commonly accepted as a bit of a powergamer army and then starts losing. Fragile ego.

Look forward to the follow up report.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Well, day 2

Game 4 vs Chaos space marines. Snowblind (Scatter forces around, 2d6*4 night fighting).

His list: (All MoCU)
Keeper of secretes
Lt w/Power weapon

8 man CSM squad (2 meltas, AC w/chains)
2x10 man CSM squads (2 meltas, AC w/PF)
1x9 man Daemonette squad
9 fury squad
Land Raider
2x7 man Havocs (4 AC's, tank hunters)

Highlights:

First off, kinda bad game...he didn't know how alot of the rules worked. Almost felt sorry for him. Plus he kept on moving units back to move other units, then back again, etc...

He had a havok squad scatter off the table into reserves in deployment.
I had an Elite carni, a stealer squad, and one of my gaunt broods scatter off.

I believe I gave him first turn I believe.

I sent one of his squads scurrying off the table from shooting, with his Lt with it.

He invited possession as soon as possible.
His Daemonettes came in and charged one of my heavy support carnis and a Zoey with the keeper of secrets. Took out the Zoey, and 3 wounds on the carni.

His furys and a CSM squad charged a gaunt unit I had in some ruins.

Gaunt unit countercharged the keeper/daemonettes to keep them locked.

Genestealers and an Elite Carni charged the furys/CSM squad. Tore through the CSM's, then moved onto the fury's and the 2 man remenants of a CSM squad that charged in to support. Took several turns, but I took them out.

His Land Raider eventually took out one of my Tyrants, but my HS carni could never see far enough to get a shot at it.

2nd Genestealer squad charged keeper, taking it out, then moved onto the Daemonettes (Who finished the gaunt squad), taking them out.

In the end, I Held two quadrants, plus removed everything of his except his Havocs and the Land raider. Win for me.

5th game was unplanned assault vs marines. (start with compulsory two troops on the board, Turn 3, roll for what the objective is).

His army:

Master (Jump pack, power fist, halo)

3x8 man Tac Squads (Flamer, vet w/Power fist)
3x10 man Tac squads (Missile/Plasma)

Big Assault squad (2 plasma, vet w/PF)
2 seperate Tornadoes (Melta/flamer)

Whirlwind
2 Ped Anihilators (Tri-Lascannon)

Terrain was basically a line of area terrain down the middle.

He got first turn, and gave it to me. I had my stealers out, he had two tac squads w/flamers.

We both advanced towards the middle. I failed a charge with stealers.

He flamed and shot one of the squads, killing 5 of them, then assaulted. He killed 2 more, but the remaining stealer held.

My other stealer squad, charged that squad, destroying it, then both squads moved onto the 2nd squad destorying it, then destroying the assault squad.

Things were tricking in. I had a HS carni and a tyrant going up one flank, they ended up destroying both preds. Another carni got the whirlwind

I couldn't see through the terrain to target a vehicle, so one of my HS carnis shot at the closest units, his master, insta-killing him.

The mission ended up being seize the terrain pieces. Scoring unit within 6" of a terrain piece means you control it.

My termagaunts formed a huge line behind the terrain pieces, effectively controling all of the ones in the middle.

He moved up his forces to contest them also.

Shooting forced two fall back moves (though one was only 2") and a pinned unit.

My Last turn, my spinegaunts charged a unit of marines Lost, but held.
His last turn, 6 spinegaunts vs 6 marines. He kills one, I kill two...And they run. Leaving his next nearest scoring unit 6.5" away from one of the terrain pieces, giving me the win.

Obviously, going 5-0, I got best general, but out of 20 people, I got 14th overall.

Last in comp...Even though there was an army that consisted of 2 5 man squads in rhinos, a dread, 2 crusaders, a land raider, a terminator unit, and a unit of grey knight termies.

Last in sports, even though I tried to be nice to some people...Warned them about stuff, and let them take back moves when they didn't realize how rules worked.

16th in painting...An army that had half the models unpainted scored one point less than me...

So much for even thinking of toning down my lists any more like I did this time, or bothering to try to paint them well...

Drop pod armies are not the best against horde armies. If you drop in close and rapid fire then the Marines will be charged the next turn. If you land further away there is the chance you will still scatter towards the horde and get charged... especially against leaping gaunts. The best thing to do is bring in all your pods close together and build a wall that the horde has to move around. You can pick them off as the come around the wall. I think the best a pod army can do against a horde army is win by a small margin... keep your best units safe and pour everything into the units flanking around your wall. If the pod army goes second you can charge the last turn FTW.

Ah, the revenge of the sore losers: rip the guy who beat you on soft scores.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

I have the same problem when I play my Godzilla nids...I get tanked in comp.

Here is my theory: There is no such thing as a cheesy space marine army, but any army that can beat space marines is cheesy.

So what I did was tone down my army a lot and made it into a little bug horde, and still got crappy comp.

I think what we have to realize here is a lot of the people who play this game may never have been good at anything else in their LIFE.  So if they get beat they cant stand it and when they have a chance to bring you down with comp or whatever scoring they can they will.  Thus the problem with comp.  Personally I think comp is necessary but there are obvious inherent flaws.  They should probably give out an award to the best general and then also one for the one who scored the highest in comp, because it seems that those two titles are seldom won by the same person.

Oddly enough, Godzilla Nids is my least favorite list to face, with the possible exception of "podding terminators w/ a dozen assault cannons, librarians, etc" marines ... So in that light, nice shot in that first game!

All the same, I think it's very sad that you get tanked because people either don't like your army or are sore losers. And then there's your nerfed painting score, also not making a ton of sense ... But congrats on your Best General all the same, and for stomping on that one powergamer marine list. Kinda neat to see the different marine-y lists in there, like the CSM one.

Thanks for the reports.

When ever I play I end up doing pretty good in comp and win a good chunk of the games I play.  I also tend to get extremely high in sportsmanship because I know its a game. I don't "try to be nice to SOME people".  I go at it with a good attitude and no one walks away feeling cheated or annoyed.

The few tournies I enterered all had objective comp scores.  There was bonus points for "themed" armies but that was part of the extra points you could give to that oppenent that really wowed you in that field.  I agree with comp because it helps put more... "realistic" armies on the field and creates some variety.  If comp wasnt an issue you would see 5 man las &plas squads everywhere.  You may ask "Whats wrong with a 5 man or even the more viable 6 man las & plas squad?" Where have you ever read about marines in squads less than 10 running around with two squad weapons?

The same could be said about 3 of the same carnifex that was min maxed or the tyrants that came from a cookie cutter. When you design an army for a tournie you go by a couple simple guidlines:

-How will the armies be judged? Will it be anti copy paste?  Do they give plus points for more creativity / themed armies?

-Will they judge on the painting?

-Make sure you bring enough anti marine / anti MEq weapons

they are just really hard for some lists to beat. With all the high tougness and shooting it can overwelm so armies, especially is they arnt familiar with them.

My ferils had the same effect, but people thought they were still cool after losing to them.

If you have a good witch cult army zilla bugs is almost a free win.

It goes back to that rock paper scisor effect that 40k has.

They're hard to score a lot of wounds on before they start hurting you more than you can hurt htem.

Even with an Assault Cannon heavy force in pods, you have to put every terminator on the table when you start the game because you will never get enough rending hits in a limited amount of turns to kill 8 Monsterous Creatures, 6 of whom have 2+ Saves.

I think the best answer to Godzilla is a healthy mix of Las/Plas and assault cannons. It makes for a boring as hell game though.

I agree that drop pods are not the best thing in the world to run against zilla nids. That said I have not really had a problem with them seeing they are slow. They are a very cool army irregardless.

People are scared of Tyranids. You don't see them that often, which makes it an even worse experience when losing to them.

What I hate about Tyranids is the fact that the same person that wrote this codex also wrote the one for eldar. The 4th edition nid codex got rid of stuff like mutable ripper swarms and hive nodes but it seems the only competitive way to play them is zilla style. Maybe I am wrong there and pls correct me if so. On the other hand eldar made out just as well as Space Marines in 4th edition.

I personally think one of the best answers to zilla nids is actually Eldar shooty with some Harlequin swarms, the possible 40 rending attacks work wonders, I have even see a squad of these eat a broodlord and his stealer swarm. . .

You definitely should be annoyed with this fact. Comp and Sportsmanship are completely subjective, but painting (the way it is usually set up) should certainly reward a decently painted army over an army that contains unpainted models.

You just have to take solace in the fact that all you can do is win your games and try to be nice about it. If players still want to be poor sports and dump your soft scores there simply isn't anything more you can do about it without changing your army composition to make more people feel happy about it.

In the end, as this new season of USGTs rolls through, more and more RTT will likely start to follow it's lead and comp scores will go away and the importance of painting and sportsmanship will be adjusted to the appropriate level.

Just be pleased with your 5-0 record. Great job!

Skyth: how did the gaunts perform? Did you keep them behind the MC wall, or run them out as targets? Was there ever a situation where you wish you had stealers instead of gaunts, or gaunts instead of stealers?

I run a godzilla list with 3 full units of armored stealers. Its pretty straightforward & brutal. I'm thinking of varying it up a bit so I'm looking at what other lists are doing.

Do you think maybe people hit on comp more for the 5 man choir than for the zilla list?

To be fair playing Chaos is a world different than playing Loyalist Marines. Besides most armies are running around with 3+ or better saves on the majority of their models now anyway.

Oh and you got hosed completely on Comp & Painting man.  If I had played you you'd have gotten full marks.

The gaunt performed well. I wouldn't have traded them for Stealers. I also wouldn't have traded the Stealers for gaunts. The gaunts were great for area denial/taking. They held my flanks vs drop pods, something that stealers wouldn't have had the numbers to do. They also are great at tying up enemy models cheaply until the real threats (The Stealers) come in to deal with them.

Hopefully moving to Rochester will help in that respect. People up there that I've talked with seem to be more interested in actual competetive lists.
