I'm officially tired of painting this Taurox. I NEED something different to paint. It's a lot of work that no one seems interested in really.

That is an amazing job on the wagon, they are an ugly beast and have so many issues, but you have at least made it look the business. Like I say Dakka is a bit quiet, it is summer.

Oh and for something a bit different, get cracking on an entry for the LoER comp, that could be a nice distraction.

He's full of great ideas. And quite capable of making a reality of them in very short order. Which makes visiting his threads a treat, always.

I see that Taurox and it wants the minesweeper arm, or whatever it is called that one finds on the Buffalo MRAP. It's the weird tracks that do it in. It should be a six wheeler. You've made a nice job it it, which is a heck of an accomplishment.

Good job on the Taurox...

...someone should make a Tau empire version of this thing...

...looks good.

On the whole I like the taurox, except for the original track things, and the submarine doors (not the doors themselves, just their addition to this model; not suited to it's looks), the positioning of the guns, and...no, that may be it. I'd probably find more if I had one to hand.

Everyone has hated this poor kit since it came out. I think they are not a million miles from being not bad, and your work is a perfect example of what can be done, I think maybe part of the problem is the age old GW sclae issues, I look at this and see a recon vehicle, not a troop transport.

Anyways, come on bud, what you upto?

Thanks Guys!

@cam not much, I got the base camo on the Basilisk, then realized it was the 21st thing in a row I painted exactly the same way, and that I havent done anything for almost 2 months on my weekends other than paint tanks that no one really wanted to see. Essential busy work. I got discouraged, then started playing Fortnite, which was stupid, because it seems like I'm at work more than anything these days. A great game that sucks time that I dont have.

That's about it. The oppressive heat and humidity has finally taken a break, so I had to spend more time on yardwork. (I hate being outside in stupid humidity, who the hell thought it would be a good idea to drain the Black Swamp in the 1840s, and pretend it's not still a damn swamp, then settle here?"

Also, I was excited about 8th edition, but in order to complete my Artillery section, I need a missile launcher kit, GW has been sold out of everything guard, you just can't get anything at all, Early Thursday morning, I got the email that the Manticore was back in stock, but it was completely sold out 4 hours later. I was watching streamers paint, but now everything is endless Space Marine garbage. They are NOT supposed to outnumber the guard, ever. It's in their lore, yet they do, in releases, novels, re releases, updates, everything.

I think the Taurox came out nicely. After being initially turned off from them (like everyone else) I picked up a couple after seeing that they can look nice with conversion kits. I threw two together using the blood and skulls conversion kit with the 6 wheels. I thought they were a pretty good kit actually. It came together nicely and looks like a vehicle you might actually see in the real world after adding the wheels.

Yeah, the stock treads are horrible, and the lasers that shoot it's own hull was a stupid idea, but I've seen some great conversions of the kit, including the six wheeler. I just happen to like the half-track version. I have another kit that I think needs converted into a Munitorum Cargo Eight, an image we only have in our minds from the descriptions in novels. No artwork has ever defined it officially, but It's the gritty stuff that actually makes the Imperium Possible, the regular schmoes who move men and materials across the galaxy, on every planet, in every warzone, while the Glory Boys take all the credit.

Same here hopefully it'll be something like a M983 HEMTT. Oddly I quite like the Morris Gun Tractor the Taurox is based on but the Taurox itself annoys me.

And that is why my army has ended up the way it has.
I can easily cope with mindless repetitive tedium for a job, but when it comes to hobbies I like variety (also the reason why I've been involved with a wide variety of hobbies).

Maybe just throw in a random, completely different model every now and then to avoid getting discouraged by the endless camo'.

Either way, I'm happy to look at anything being done. You're not boring me with camo' tank after camo' tank.

Well Vik, I guess I do, just on the sheer amount of time and effort that I put into them, planning and testing a reproducable, consistant paint scheme, and trying to make them at least better than tabletop standard, dare I say "tournament standard" even if I abhor the competetive aspect of the gaming.

I oversaw the paint judging for a large tournament for 3 years. When I read "tournament standard", well, you owe me a cup of coffee and a new keyboard. Tournament standard is a very low tabletop quality. Your tanks are way ahead of it. Tournament standard does not include cleaning mold lines, for example.

I don't mind the competitive aspect of certain games. Tournaments can be fun. Infinity works well as a tournament game. I hear Magic:Tha Gathering works well. However, Games Workshop games do not make, and as far back as I can recall ( mid-nineties) have never made, good tournament games. ( I suppose I need to add, "in my experience and opinion:, to keep a certain sort away.)

The other thing to consider is that most of us have seen these tanks many, many times before. It's difficult to come up with much to say about them at this point.

Well, I know absolutely nothing about tournament anything. I know I took my best to Golden Demon in 2012, and made it to the second round of judging, and that was it. It's just my personal standards, to never play with an unpainted army, and never, ever show anything with mold lines or undrilled barrels.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the standard to which armies at tournaments are painted-- 3 colors, most often irregularly applied. Effectively, the bare minimum required to call a mini painted. If you are talking about things like Golden Demon or Crystal Brush, that is something entirely different. And a much higher standard.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I tend to divide painting into two categories: for the tabletop and for the display case. Each has its own merits, and requirements. I think painting for the tabletop is actually more difficult, since the mini will be viewed in all manner of lighting, and from all angles. It's what I prefer.

I always thought Tournament painting was supposed to be above the tabletop level, yet lower than competition painting.

Oh no, that has never been my experience. Tournament level is stuff painted just to have it painted for the tournament. No concern or effort for quality at all. Next up is painted nicely enough that it looks good on the table... from 3 feet away, your basic tabletop standard. Seems like we had a bit of an electronic miscommunication.

If your work was good enough to make the first cut at a Golden Demon, it is significantly better than tournament or basic tabletop.

I was just watching a video of the taurox on another painters blog and having seen a few other crazy blogs currently going with massive terrain I had an idea. The taurox to me looks like a great 40k train engine without the wheels and tracks. Maybe a good basis for an ash waste nomads land train. I'm almost tempted to buy one now thanks Dave. I'm actually sitting outside miniaturemarket waiting for them to open in two minutes . I was also thinking how the containers would look great as the box cars .

I need to not do this .

But it carries 10 people and a battle cannon right? thanks for that! I didn't buy it. I managed to get out with only a few paints. Though they had a damaged copy of Dark imperium (40% off) and a few of the space marine codex with minor damage (50% off). I passed my will power roll. Must save the money for the New Necromunda that is right around the corner . Though the Goliath rock grinder and GSC are calling me to make a Van Saar gang .

The parts from the Taurox kit WOULD make a great basis, but the frame would need to be extended with some serious conversion work. The way the parts are cut is mostly modular, there are a few corners that would need serious surgery. I think it would be a great kit for conversions in general, but I wanted at least one to use in a game, see how it performs, then expand if necessary.

I fnally got an order in for a Leman Russ Demolisher kit, but the manticore is still sold out. GW replied to my email with dates of early august for everything I asked about EXCEPT Catachans.......this makes me either nervous, or excited. The new bendy plastic jungle foliage kit leans me more towards excited!
