I plan on ordering a big vice with a quick release. They arent cheap though. How do you mean mill it? cut it square with a big band saw?
Ripsaw. I didn't have a large bandsaw at the time, and it would be too dangerous to try and use irregularly shaped pieces in what I had. However, tulip poplar is soft wood, and straight grained for the most part. A ripsaw can make short work of that sort of wood. Then run the pieces through a planer and voila, lumber. We are talking pieces that were 5"-6" diameter and 4' long or so.

I used to watch a show called "The Woodwright's Shop" on PBS. he would go through all sorts of techniques like the above, using just hand tools. Real Old School stuff.

A nice front vice will run north of $60. An end vice will probably be ~3 times that amount or more. (and a quick check. Yep. ~$200 or so) I rarely use my end vice ( I homebrewed it), but the front vice is indispensible.

This 9" model cost around $150, they get more expensive too. The big 2 screw and chain models are crazy, but if you're doing a lot of long edge work, it can be worth it.

Unfortunately, not enough things have been clamped yet. I've been at work. I'm beyond done with this job in it's current state. I need a progression. A step. An upward movement and I'm not settling for less this time. I've had enough working on the weekends too. It's the worst thing in the world when the weather is nice and your wife is at home.

Well, its been a momentous couple of weeks for me. I quit my corporate gig!!! I am free! Also, I had a surgery to fix the deviated septum from when I broke my nose 35 years ago. Now my nose is finally straight. I had to live with stents in my nostrils for the past week recovering from surgery. It was hell, but this morning I finally got the stents and stitches out! I can BREATHE! WOOT!

Now I find myself with lots and lots of free time on my hands, and a humongous collection of wargaming crap....
I still dont like Space Marines and by extension, stormcast muhreens. I'm still waiting on my Modiphius Fallout kickstarter. Fallout 76 may be out before then. Who wants to play?

The road to recovery looks like Gaslands.com . Less than $20 for the rulebook. ($19 from their website, $15 for the PDF download, around $11 on Amazon) buy a $5 five pack of hot wheels cars, print out the templates from the download section of the website. Order dice from Etsy for $5 or just use regular D6s and consult the chart till you memorize it. Hours of fun even before you start customizing the cars or building terrain. 3’x3’ table is okay, but 4’x4’ is suggested.

Oh and watch Mad Max movies for inspiration .

Vik. it was not pleasant, swollen face, tubes the size of necromunda bulkheads in my nose, bloody snot accumulating, but dont dare blow your nose, self-waterboarding with saline solution, and yes, tears. My eyes would just run with tears from the swelling near my eyes. I couldn't afford it until now, remember, world's only for-profit healthcare system and all... and I've been getting frequent sinus infections, so my wife's real insurance(from Switzerland) (not the snake oil policies most people get from American Corporations) got me into an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. its essentially a nose job (rhinoplasty) and a straightening (septoplasty). I don't really know what's next in life.

Damn dave, that sounds really horrible eesh. Well I do wish you the best on the road to recovery my friend.

Oh wanted to ask you some thing munda related I'm a member of yaktribe and I was looking at alternative minatures and they listed litko and they have a tower set that seemed pretty ok they have three of em a super huge one a med one and a small one. and as I'm not the best scratch builder and munda bulk heads being 12 for $60 do you think this would be a reasonable alternative?

@Bama - I've seen those. they look pretty plain for the price, but if you need terrain, they look like they'd work great! Multi levels are essential, but so is cover. You might want to glue on bits of corrugated card and plastic on the railings to serve as cover. Without cover, no one will use a platform.

There re a LOT of other companies now, this one makes them more updated to the new box set, like the forge world offering

https://spikeybits.com/2018/01/new-necromunda-terrain-set-from-art-of-war-studios.html

Promethium Forge are my current favorite, mix of old-school and new
https://promethiumforge.com/

New School Munda works well with large raised platforms, or risers. That's why I like the Promethium Forge, but for me, I'd like to have a source of bulkhead sides to make my own risers. Like a ton of the barricades. With a flat riser, you can put regular terrain on top for added dimensions of height.

@Bama - dont, even for a second, think everything has to match, or be the same brand. A table looks best with variety. Some of my favorite are Sarissa Precision, but they are expensive to ship to the US, so I only have a few.

@slave - Have you played the Inquisitor: Martyr video game? - the maps are random generated, but look like they were made with GW products. Corridors and doors. It plays like a diablo-ish RPG

oh I know that game its pretty fun the controls are a little weird but the concept is great I play an assassin on there.

In regards to the terrain i really like two of the sets im torn between the tower can set and the mini bulk head set to start...and i agree hodgepodge does make for an awesome board. but nothing a caot of paint can't fix to make it look differnet.

Thanks guys! It's weird, these are 32mm, so significantly larger/taller than a standard GW human, but look at the headswaps for my second squad of rebels:

Sgt. with a RT era Guard helmet (what could look more Star Wars?)

Rotary Blaster dude with IG Tanker head

Regular Mook with Closed Tanker head

I think MOST GW heads are already 32mm. I've tried proper 28mm Heroic heads, and they look way too small.

It doesn’t hurt that Star Wars has a bunch of people (aliens) with huge heads. I understand it because it’s human actors inside the masks, but it does add to the genre.
