To be honest if it was me I think I would get +1 LD when near that banner.

Possibly +1 attack too.

I have been able to do a bit more on the dude..

Here the helm (I'm stopping myself from writing 'helmet') has had the white layers applied, probably a few more to go and the tabard/loincloth whatever has been started too...

Further along again..I've also added a 'U' on the white kneepad (original I know)...

The Ancient's insignia is a laurel wreathed skull on the shoulder pad (him and everyone else) so I thought I'd go with the 'official' scheme for once (I had no other ideas)..

I wasn't going to lose too much sleep over it as it will be mostly covered by the banner anyway..mostly etc

I blocked out the green in Vallejo super opaque 'Dark Angel Green' equivalent and then added leaves in the 'Woodland Green' equivalent (if you're old enough to remember those paints). Their foundation copy is really good and well recommended. I then added a basic skull shape in elf flesh. Then added rubbish eyes in black..

A tiny bit of definition was added to the skull with bleached bone and Argax..It will do, like I said it will be mainly covered from the front anyway..

Here he is so far, banner a blank (and intimidating) slate. I will need to do it next and kind of don't want to.

In other news I managed to track down today's release of CONQUEST which snagged me the penultimate Dark Imperium sprue to chuck on my Primaris pile, the last sprue comes out in about 3 more weeks I believe. For £7.99 you get 5 Inters and 3 officers, pretty good deal. After that I might get the Repulsor and possibly the terrain that will be the last few issues..

Anyway, back to the grind...

Awesome stuff again and I'm enjoying seeing 'true' marines. In other news, you've inspired me to get off my backside and post a new battle report.

As for that banner, under the old rules, surely it would have been +1 penetration?

Coat? collect your prize more like. Well done. Glad to hear about another report, I've started reading the Triskelion saga but am only about 3 in. Arbites!

Thanks for all your (smutty) replies. I'm glad I'm slowly driving down standards where ever I go. Soon everyone will compulsively say 'that's what she said' at inopportune moments and scrawl phallus on any surface possible.

Corruption aside..here's some painting..

The bearer is pretty much done here and unable to put it off any longer I've sketched out the flag's design in thinned black...

Here I'm slowly tightening up the different areas and starting to use the relevant colours...

Finished! Actually now that I look at it I think it could do with a bit more attention. Funny how pictures can highlight that.

I think I will use the background colour to tidy up a bit and then start with one area and take it to completion. I think the 'Nid head would be a logical place to start as it's on top.

Anyway hope to crack on a bit more over the next few days (and do some painting), hope you like.

I know what rule the 'other banner design' should grant, 'Gets Hot'.

Thank you I'll be here all week.

I have done a bit more on the banner but have been struggling with getting on with it further...

I've added more to all the areas so they are blocked out better..and I've started adding the head's details...

The head in the original pic is much lighter than the base coat and is basically pink. I've added (what would have been) Warlock purple to the Worm purple base. coat. Then I've added white and Bleached Bone in much smaller amounts..

After a bit of that (I should have started with a much brighter base really) I added the detailling back in....

I added more white and BB and highlighted the raised areas...and started the chitin plates...

I added a bit more definition and teeth etc. I did the final layer of highlights too. I need to sort out his ear (?) holes, redo some black lining and then a bit of shading with watered done Worm purple. That should be the head done bar the gory blood bits. Whilst this is the largest area to do I'm not looking forward to the scroll work and lettering, so easy to mess up.

Hopefully I'll get on with it soon.

Probably not.

I've always enjoyed doing lots of freehand stuff. My original 1-2nd Ed army has lot of the then obligatory backbanners I may do some pics of them for this blog and the Flashback Friday thread.

I've had people staying and more again now as well as lots of essay stuff I should be doing but I did manage the tiniest bit of progress, which is still progress!

Stupid glarey pic. I've do another layer of highlights on the standard and added some more shading. The 'neck holes' have been tidied up too. The 'U' itself has been given another layer of white.

The laurels have been started too. They are sketched in in the 1st pic and filled in more here. I will tidy them and add another highlight.

Might not get a chance till tuesday now but I'm feeling more inspired to trudge on with this guy..

In other news MLCS has completed his lovely (foul) Xenos Crisis Suits and they are worth a look, head over there even if it's just for more #tauabuse

I will always salute Monster Munch, well done sir. I await delivery of the Tau leg from you.

I've been hitting deadlines and so have not been able to do much painting but here is another minor update from the slow progress reported in tedious detail..

With the Nid head and wreath mostly done (mostly etc) it was time to start on the sword (that's what she said etc). I blocked out the blade in Vallejo 'Fortress Grey' analogue..

I added detail to the blade, most of this will be obscured by loads of blud. I started on the skull on the pommel, it has a annoying star burst around it that is really hard to get right on a curved surface, it's quite wavy up there... I have also done the grip and guard, I may go back and do a little shading on the guard however..

I then added Ultramarine to the grey mix and did another layer of shading. I started working on the scroll work which is what I'm least happy about doing as the lettering will be a ball ache. I went back over the background and tidied up the blue a bit too.

Adding a bit more Ultramarine to the mix I did another few layers of shading on the blade. I then started with fortress again and added white to do a few tiny layers of highlighting..

So I think the next bit will be the blood spooging all over the severed head, the stupid starburst thing at the top and then finally, the scroll shading and lettering. Once all that is done I will shade/highlight the blue and red on the banner itself. So it's getting pretty close but still a way to go. Still got a lot of coursework to do by the end of the month so I won't have loads of time but I see what I can get away with.

Thanks again. It's always been my favourite SM banner.

I did a tiny bit more today (after I finished the 'big' essay) and will try to do a bit over the weekend, would be nice to finish it (this year). In other news I got issue 59 of CONQUEST which was the last DI sprue so I no have all those Primaris everyone else has had for 2 years now. I quite fancy putting them together and will blend them with the one 'proper' set of 5 I got in WtD box and hopefully make some guys who aren't immediately obvious as the contents of DI. I will probably do those 2 Sternguard/TWV first but I'm looking forward to building for a bit after what feels like a lot of painting.

Thank you brother!

So I hoped to have this done by now but as I have this new work thing starting next week, the coursework for it due soon and preparation for all of it, my kid gets ill and has this week off school. FML. I thought I'd just post what I've done so far instead. I'll have family staying for a week from tomorrow so won't be able to get any in (or do any painting). After a week I'll have run my first course and be visitor free and able to piss about a bit more.

First off I added the filthy xenos blood staining the lovely sword.

Then highlighting with several layers of red with increasing levels of orange added..

I then started the scroll work. I did several layers of shading adding Scorched brown and black to the Elf flesh base, about three layers or so..I did a bit of highlighting too, adding White an Bleached bone(r), I may go back and add another, final highlight...still too chicken to actually write on it...

It's not super obvious in these pics but I've highlighted the red box surrounding the design, I think I'm not going to add the little arrow bits pointing in from the corners as I don't think they're necessary...

Trying hard to keep off the glare, here is where I'm up to so far. I've highlighted the blue background now in about 4-5 layers adding Ultramarine and White to Regal blue. Basically it's the lettering, a little squiggle in the right bottom bit and maybe a bit of definition in the 'U'. Once that's done; that will be the Battle Company finished.

Strewth.

Thanks, dude.

Heavy duty real life stuff is out the way for a couple of days so wanted to crack on with this guy..

I lightened the scroll with a layer of thinned Bleached bone follow by a BB/White mix. I then practiced writing out the word on a bit of paper sketching an approximate space. It was really hard to fit in (that's what she said) and it took me a few goes to work out just how small it needed to be. I then lightly sketched it in ejector pencil..

I then added the lettering in a black/brown/water mix. My brush was just starting to go off to add to the difficulty. I think it's come out OK and I did some minor tidies after this pic, painting out the pencil with a thinned Elf flesh, I also noticed the tiny skull bottom right hadn't got his eyes done..

I think once finally added to the dude it looks fine (this is before the tidy up). I'm just glad to have finally finished him. It also marks the end of painting my Company! Bloody hell. I would like to get some full parade pics at some point but unsure when I'll get the chance also lighting big shots like that are a challenge...

Here's the colour party, Captain Unnamed (though I'm leaning towards Captain Darling), Command squad (or Company Veterans? Whatever they're called now) and the Ancient take the evening air..

OK, no excuses. Muster the company. On the ready line! Squad pics, full shots (both parade and deployed for battle), HQ highlights, the works. What’s your shelf deployment for gear?

Find some filthy xenos and play a game large enough to do a blue tide list. Get pics of that. Surprisingly, not as hard to put 100+ marines on the table these days.

I don't know why (though it's probably because one doesn't often see it), but I really like the green on the weapon housings. Visually, it also helps your golden weapons stand out as special, too, without much effort to make them look "mastercrafted". Nice.

That banner is really well done. Lots of subtle layering.

Thanks! Yes I like the dark green kit, it feels more military or something and as it is tonally similar to the blue they seem to sit well with each other. I'm glad the banner worked as well as it did, I was trying to stretch myself and do it to a higher level. There was an article in WD a while a go where this guy did a tutorial on a Crimson Fist banner which was amazing. I tried to emulate his efforts but came up short (which was a net improvement).

Yes I'd love to do a big game/photoshoot sometime soon. I assume you have the new Apocalypse rules. I'd be ok running it as 8th too, still runs quicker than the old Apoc games we used to do. I'll be in touch when I next get a babysitter which may happen once before Xmas.

Back to coursework now but I am having a day off tomorrow to probably play KT with MLCS and maybe get some pics off if we can light it etc.

Toodles (and thank you all, you're an inspiration).

It might just be the way I organize my collection, but I’ve got my company sitting on one shelf, with their formal gear. Now this is often NOT how they hit the table. I’ve got the spare swap shelf full of extra special/heavy weapons, magnetized bits for the officers, etc. If I need one MM/M c-melta squad, the 5th squad will hit the table running, as that’s their stock shelf deployment. If I needed another squad geared the same way, one of the other tac squads would trade with the extras. Probably the 2nd or 3rd squad, depending. The Dev squads are also highly variable, depending on the needs of the list.

I should probably re-visit my shelf deployment. I think the last time I did was sometime in 6th. It’s nice just to be able to grab a squad off the shelf, and not have to tinker with them to get them to the table.

OK I see what you mean. I used to do this but part of collecting a company came from looking at an increasing pile of swap-out guys and thinking 'all I need to do is make loads of bolter guys and that's a whole other squad' and so I now don't have any swapping guys. I just use the appropriate unit that has the stuff I require. I would like to add some combi weapons to a few of the sarges, they can be great piling out of a razorback.

So I managed to get round MLCS's place and set up for some full company pics. The lighting was pretty good and whilst there is some glare I think it's better than expected (and we played a game of KT too!).

Behold the 3rd Company in full (well my version of it anyway)....The Scourge of the Xenos...

That took a long time. The painting/modelling that is, the photo shoot only took about an hour. This is 'only' the Company, there is all the support elements I've done too, Scouts, Vets, Aircraft and vehicles etc. I'll do some full army shots one day but will require a full sized table!

The Command section. Captain Darling and his close 'advisor' Librarian Eldritch. Ancient Somethingus holds aloft the barely dry banner and the 5 man HQ squad are their bodyguards. These pics are a little small and the gallery ones are better sized, the size up makes them far too big, bleh.

Annoyingly blurry pic of my Jump Chaplin and LT No1.

Medic (showing his age now, it's a very old paintjob) and LT No2.

60 Tacticals. Also the 2 Dreads assigned to this company...

The heavies. I may make some 'cherubs' for them but they will be servo skulls as cherubs are rank. I tried to make the bolter guys look like devastators too so they have lots of optics and ammo (and helmets off)....

The swordy guys. The last squad completed and the earliest (surviving) paintjobs too..

Lots of guys. I like the serried ranks stretching off into the distance....

More shots of these guys, (newly slightly tidied) banner is nicely visible here..

Rawrrgh.

So that's quite a lot of Space Marines. It took my something like 13 years but there is the small matter of a Company of IG (plus all the tanks etc) in that time too (as well as other sundry projects including a medium sized Medieval army) so it wasn't just them. feels good to have them all done and I'm in hobby shock now.
