Ok, I;m thinking of taking up some Gothic, and thought that I might as well go Imperial Navy, as my mate wants to go Chaos, and we can split the cost of the main box. At the moment, my computer won't read the PDF files on the Gothic website. However, this is NOT about rules, as such. I am a fan of Naval warfare, and know that aircraft carriers are vital in a battle. I assume this is true for Gothic, where waves of bombers, released at a critical time (ie, to mob a ship from the back whilst other units hit it too), could turn a battle. Is it posible to have either aircraft carrier-esque ships in IN forces, or are there cruisers that can launch respectable amounts of bombers/fighters? Would a fleet based around a Mars (the one with the Nova cannon) - or more if I can, many cruisers, a few escorts, and waves of fighters/bombers work (provided it's used properly)? Any help would be most appreciated.

In a word yes. The Mars is a stand off carrier because of the Nova Casnnon and lances. Its nice but is a design that tries to do too much.
Support your Mars with two Lunars and a Dictator. This should provide a good mix or lances, batteries and attack craft. This should do for your starting forces. Then add two blisters of Swords and some lance armed Dauntlesses, I would take three. Round off the fleet with an Emperor.
This should give you a good workable fleet.

If you like carrier style tactics have a look at Tau as a second force.

I know this is a bit old, but hey, I've got an update:
So, here is a list. I have no idea if it's good or not, just something I be asking about:
Admiral (ld9) 100 points
Emperor Battleship + Shark Assault Boats 370
2x Overlord Battlecruisers 470
1x Mars Class Battlecrusier + Left Column Gunnery shift 285
3x Lunar Class Cruisers 540
2x Sword Class Frigates 70
5x Cobra Class Escorts "Widowmakers" 150
1985
Basically, the Mars and Emperor provide Ordnance cover
Lunars lead central line
Overlords act as pair, flanking enemy
Swords protect Emperor
Cobras protect Overlords & run "wolf-pack" tactics.
Ok, so, what do you think? Is it any good, or are there too few cruisers for 2,000 points (only 9 "capital" ships)?
any thoughts appreciated.

Sorry, your list isn't legal - you must have 2 normal or light cruisers for each battlecruiser, so you'd need 6 cruisers to support 2 Overlords & 1 Mars.

Drop the overlords and get some Dauntless' and a Gothic. A Gothic teamed with a Lunar is pretty powerful.

I realise that it's illegal now, I had the 6 cruisers in an earlier list, but had to cut out some units, and ended up with this, forgetting the "2 cruisers needed for a battlecruiser" ruling.
Why does everyone hate the Overlord, and to a lesser extend AFAIK, the Tyrant? I am wondering why I have gotten negative feedback on these long-ranged units (since I may be acing an Eldar or two).

Here is a list that I wrote based on a radical idea of NO battlecruisers (after all, they are as easy to kill as normal cruisers, and cost more).
Please let me know what you think of it:
Admiral (Ld9) 100
Emperor Class Battleship (Shark Assault Boats) 370
2x Dictator Class Cruisers 440
2x Tyrant Class Cruisers (upgraded batteries) 410
1x Dominator Class Cruisers 190
3x Dauntless Light Cruisers 330
2 Sword Escorts 70
2 Sword Escorts 70
1980
Here's the plan:
The 2x Dictators, 2x Tyrants and Dominator all come together into 1 squadron. This assaults the enemy, spewing out Torpedos and attack craft, before batteries take over for serious fire.
Behind these are my 3 Dauntless to take on the enemy when the shields are down, and to flank opposing ship, and guard my rear from Escorts.
The Emperor is at the back, providing covering fire and ordnance screens for my fleet. This is guarded by the 2x 2 Swords.
I am unsure on the Dominator - the Nova Cannon and high-strength Batteries seem to make it good to cover the read of the squadron, and more lances seem unnecessary thanks to the Dauntless' behind. Having said that, would either a Lunar or a Gothic be more effective in guarding the rear ahnd providing cover fire?
Thanks for the help so far.
Any more thoughts appreciated.

Anyone?
What about adding in some Grand Cruisers from the other fleet lists (using the Obscuras Bastion Fleet List, so as to be able to take all the ships I curently have).
I mis-remembered the Tyrant costs, so they ar e a little cheaper. Basically, without the Dominator, I have 230 points left to play with. Any advice where to spend these on a real killy ship?
I feel I lack enough Lances, I only have 9, and all those are 30cm range. How about that "House Rule" ship on the separate download, the 'Govenor Class' cruiser - slightly more than the points I have available, but adds an extra 4 Lances at 45cm per side to the force. Or, is it just an under-armoured Gothic with more shields & turrets & hit points?
Seriously, are there any ships you can recommend to use up 230 points?

Buy one reroll. You dont need that many carriers to be honest. You are short of lances, get Lunars instead of Tyrants. if you want long ranged batteries get an Overlord, though the Emperor has you covered for long range Eldar killing flak. Pairs of swords work, an old favourite, but only if you have enough to go around and then only as a counter to old rules Chaos fighter spam. Nowadays you are better off with a single big squadron, especially if you have nice vulnerable Dauntlesses to act as bomber magnets.
My take (points cost by memory)
Admiral Ld9 plus reroll 125pts Emperor with sharks 370pts Overlord with extra turret 245pts Dictator 220pts 2x Lunar 360pts Lunar with nova cannon 200pts 3x Dauntless with lances 330pts 4x Swords 140pts
1990pts
