This is a draft for a 1750p comped tourney, I need help to make a compy yet effective list. Multiple crisis are heavily penalized, their mere presence is "bad". To some extent this list is also hampered by the avaliabel models which is not much more than whats in the list now. Found in the last tourney that marines really don't like railrifles, so now there are even more of them :p Grateful for some inspiration, and I do read dakka so I know the truly optimal list, this is not going to be that list, but in its planned environment the hardest possible Tau list will fight deamonbombs and its ilk in the bottom comp category, been there done that, not fun at all. HQ: Shas'o @ 135 Pts Plasma Rifle; Stimulant Injector; Shield Generator; Vectored Retro-thrusters [O'Ninja from Advanced Tau tactica, maybe works.... still training with it ] Elite: 5 Stealth Suit @ 200 Pts Targeting Array [wrong size I know, split into two teams and boost size with points from piranha perhaps.] Troops: 10 Kroot @ 70 Pts 12 Fire Warrior @ 240 Pts Devilfish @ [120] Pts Burst Cannon; Smart Missile System; Targeting Array; Multi-Tracker; Decoy Launchers; Landing Gear 12 Fire Warrior @ 240 Pts Devilfish @ [120] Pts Burst Cannon; Smart Missile System; Targeting Array; Multi-Tracker; Decoy Launchers; Landing Gear [FoF units in warfishes, pretty vanilla and very effective.] Fast Attack: 6 Pathfinder @ 222 Pts Rail Rifle (x3); Devilfish @ [120] Pts Burst Cannon; Smart Missile System; Targeting Array; Multi-Tracker; Decoy Launchers; Marker Beacon; Landing Gear [ Another RR unit with some extra MLs, will deploy seperatly from fish almost always] 1 Piranha Light Skimmer @ 85 Pts Fusion Blaster, Seeker Missle (x2) [might exchange this one for seekers instead, since it will cause comp penalty.] Heavy Support: 3 Sniper Drone squads @ 240 Pts [paint paint pant, not even bought yet....] Hammerhead Gunship @ 190 Pts Railgun; Smart Missile System; Targeting Array; Multi-Tracker; Blacksun Filter; Target Lock; Disruption Pod; Decoy Launchers; Landing Gear [DP in order to survive when stunned] Broadside Battlesuit @ 128 Pts Team Leader; Twinlinked Railgun; Smart Missile System; Add Shield Drone; Hard-wired Blacksun Filter; Hard-wired Drone Controller; Hard-wired Multi-tracker; Advanced Stabilisation System; Bonding knife 2 Shield Drone @ [30] Pts [Walking and shooting a lot, very frowned upon vs comp but most likely worth the penalty.]

Biggest problem with the list is that in escallation, only one unit (The broadsides) starts on the table...Plus the pathfinders sans transport if you want.

Can the pathfinder not start on the table? Their ride will be in reserv but the 'finders have to start on table , or am I wrong? There will also be some kroot and sniperdrones on table to keep the broadside company. (not much no) I used to play a fairly hardcore Nikkenryo style and are trying to work my way back there again after a period of pure mechgoodness.

Ahhh...Missed those. And yes, pathfinders CAN deploy like I said...They don't have to.

Given that you're dealing with comp, it looks alright to me, so long as there's enough terrain to help keep the Pathfinders alive. If you want to go with the list how it is, I wouldn't have much of a problem with it. Just for the sake of discussion, though, here's a few ideas.
Personally, I'd take a Crisis team as your Elites; Stealths are nice and I use them all the time, but you've already got a bucketload of S5 AP5 shots coming from the Fire Warriors and the Devilfish, and some higher Str, lower AP shots would help you deal with a wider range of opponents. I also prefer a second weapon on the Ninja'O (either Fusion or CIB), rather than the shield, but that's just me. You might also want to try out the twin-Plasma upgrade for the Broadside. It goes nicely with the hardwired multitracker you've already given it.
Also, out of curiosity, why is it that Broadsides are so frowned-upon in your comp setup?

Subjective comp is the rage here in sweden, anything the judges think is boring and too good gets busted, and no, they wont tell you how a fullcomp army should look. In the preliminary round of comping only one army have scored full and that is an IG that doesn't contain one singel duplicate, anywhere, and yes it looks really strange. Tau are fairly screwed because we are obiously boring to play against with our JSJ units, large plethora of squadbased heavy weapons and horrible close combat abilities and whatnot. ( As you might realise I do not really share that opinion but I am biased so no worries.) BASS with drones are too survivable (?) or something. Crisis suits are too annoying and if they have plasma or missilepods also too good... I think I'll dump the Piranha and invest the points in a 6: th stealth and fusion+HWMT on the commander. I prefere stealth over crisis since I have trained more on stealth tactics. Also I fear that terrain is very far from 25% on the majority of the tables so stealth field might be all too necessary ( this will also affect the 'finders so maybe dump them too.)

Wow, after so many years of finger pointing at the U.S. and our comp issues, it's finally leaving us for someone else.
Sorry, couldn't resist. I'm a bit glad comp is starting to go away.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

There is actually an uncomped movement too, putting emphasis on objectives. Inspiration from a WD with rules of engagement, also avaliable on GW hompage. In those tourneys you are free to do anything that doesn't involve structure/mass points. Instead the cheesyness is checked with a large number of rounds (8+1 finale) and half of possible points come from objectives. I very much prefere the uncomped variant. However, the tournament in Gothenburg this easter is the Swedish championships and it is very much subject to subjective comp. Pun intended. (no, GW is not involved, their GT is regarded as very second class and there is not much prestige in winning the swedish GT.)

Ion cannons are indeed excellent can openers. However, with just one mobile big gun I think it will have to be a railgun since Ion really doesn't cut it as tankhunter and demon splatter. Sadly there are nowadays so many models that ignore instant kill rules so Ion have increased its value, if no insta kill=more shoots better than one bigone. I hope to comp my self out of the chaos spacemarine hell and maybe get to meet IG or vanilla marines. That sure would be refreshing
