The Nick Frostitaur looks much better with the red around the wounds, I think it's a really huge improvement. Great thread.

Looking forward to seeing those old-skool metallics back in action. Still have mine somewhere - shows that GW used to know how to make paint and containers that worked well together.

Righty O , so not wanting to fall too far behind with the paint , and the deadline for finishing these bad boys fast approaching, I slapped on the dwarves tzeentchy paint .

These guys were really tricky to paint , so much detail . probably the most detailed mini i have tried to paint actually . it was a bit of a struggle as i am not the best at detail.. I wanted to capture the feel of a pre realms of chaos paint style of early warhammer fantasy , when models were painted with realistic earthy tones, as opposed to the brighter more fantastical stuff of the realms of chaos period , having said that the purple skin is pretty much inspired by this era . I guess because they are modern miniatures you can never really capture a bygone style completely , and i think the ended up looking like a cross between mierce miniatures famoriac as painted by the outstanding painter Sébastien Picque (of deadfishpainting.com) - and Julian baylis's marauders .

I struggled quite a lot with the bases , I couldn't decide if I wanted a snow effect , or a swirly tzeentch magic effect, in the end I opted for both ;-) i found a brilliant article about basing ice effects using clear crackle paints , which I followed to the letter , but in the end I went with a more simple snow effect, to counter the insane level of detail on the models .

i hope the snow effect will help them sit on the terrain i made for them a bit easier , although creating season independant bases for the whole group will have the the nagtive effect of making them look like a sepertae bunch of figures when viewed together not on the terrain.

Lovely stuff mate. I think that last one is over compensating with the size of them horns. The darkness of the models combined with the dirty turquoise and pink really give these models a modern look imo. As always i'm impressed with your colour schemes. Remind me was the purple skin a choice or a roll on the attrbutes table?

Whats hitting the painting table next?

Will enjoy all the spoilers later as my break isn't long enough.

Aw crap i forgot about the terrain. Will have to dig it out of its drawer.

Enjoy the good weather and the gardening.

They look fantastic, such great models as well, I'd love a whole army of those little guys. Did you see much of Turska's chaos dwarfs? He made the big hat ones look fantastic as well, a similar dark style.

I love the purple skin, I think the extra contrast really helps as - although I hate this expression and the airbrush style that it will make you think of - it makes them pop. I also think the contrast with the base colour works really well, especially with tiny miniatures they could easily get lost on a dark base.

I always loved Aekold Helbrass, the champion of Tzeentch who caused life to spring up whereever he stepped. I could see Tzeentch having similar fun with your warband, making snow fall around the dwarves.

Also I love the little book familar, I've got a collection of those!

Lovely work Neil The prurple skin really helps bring out the subtler shades you've used across the stunted ones. Also really enjoying the colour of that book!

Cheers guys.

@pdh big horns little feet. Tzaangors next if I can learn to paint skin .
@ bruticus thanks , not seen turkska's untill you mentioned them, they are brilliant, especially love muted tones.
@monkey cheers buddy I just inked over the paintwork on the book , let it dry a little and rubbed it back off with a damp tissue , seemed to give a nice distressed look.

@ giraffex these chaos dwarves remind me of the goblins from harry potter.
@jimmygrill, I picked up the book heroes of wargaming for inspiration on these. I reccomend it.
@medium of death yeah , I get that , I think its a well worn trope , rumplestiltkskin etc..

@cap'n thanks mate , its a bit heavy on the wash's but I think it works well enough.
@ize cheers buddy loving your Nurglii hand banners too.
@ Lamby thanks bud , yeah crackle paints are so handy.

Brilliant Chaos Dwarves there Neil, I love the muted tones you've gone for.

I would like to ask how you did the swirling blue and purple test base? The final snow bases are great as well. (wouldn't of though of using crackle medium for ice. I must get some of the clear stuff, I have the Old Paper one at the moment.)

Amazing work as always!

Great to see the Blight Sting completed, you nailed that slug texture/color you were after, and the wings - o my, they're beautiful.

And Gortfried's armour - superb and subtle use of crackle and verdigris blue is wonderful.
His pus-riddled skin is gross too (in a good Nurglii way)!

Excellent stuff Peter!

Willken's armour is brilliant, fantastic crackle effect on the shoulder pad.

And Blightsting's skin is superb, the slug texture is great, and the pustulent parts look really gross. Absolutely brilliant

We were also tasked with building a god specific terrain piece. I did my best but Neil is just superb with terrain and I don't think its even in the same league as his Season's of Tzeentch. Here is a Nurgle's Garden with plague pools that look a hell of a lot like Jam Tarts!

The game was great and I hope to find a few pictures to post here for you.

Lamby, Monkey and GiraffeX - Thanks guys. It was fun but I'm glad its done. This Oldhammer thing really isn't as good as more modern GW games....like 2nd Edition 40k and Nercomunda! It is so complicated that we spent most of the time in the books. Creating a Daemon Weapon is more completed than a maths GCSE paper and probably lasts twice as long!

Jimmy - The wings were easy. White Spray undercoat. Washed the wings with thinned down rust brown. Gave it a couple of layers. Dry brushed them with a Rotting Flesh colour. Did this again with a little white to the mix. Washed it with really thing blue and black wash. Dry brushed again. Added a really thin glaze of the rust coloured paint along the wing sections as appropriate. Gloss Varnish

Looking forward to seeing the game pictures.

That Champion is outstanding now that he's finished.

It's a shame that the rules are terribly convoluted, at least fun was had though and excellent models have been created.

I should point out one of things about oldhammer I did like was magic. Wizards are still level 1-4 and for each level they know three spells. Eg a level 2 wizard would know 3 level one spells and 3 level two spells. The higher the spell level the better it is. Then at the beginning of the game you roll up your magic points for the game. level one has 3d6, level two has 6D6. and then through the game as you cast spells your total decreases. I felt it was quite tactical. Oh and every unit has a magic save.

Cheers MoD

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. Yeah, same here! Peter, I wish you hadn't pointed out the similarity, because now I have a huge appetite for jam tarts, aligned on my plate to form a symbol of Nurgle

The warband is absolutely, utterly stunning, like most anything you try your hand at. If I had to pick a favourite part of the project, it would have to be the slug effect on the daemonic steed, though: That part looks like it's been taken from an actual slug (I wouldn't put it beyond you, you know ). Almost makes me want to start a Khornate RoC warband...

As for the terrain, don't feel bad about it not holding up to Neil's Garden of Tzeentch: Compared with Neil's work, about 99% of terrain pieces look like children's play -- I cannot even begin to imagine how boring other people's terrain projects must look to him

Anyway, always a pleasure to see your updates, Peter!

Aye up..

@ Mister feral , apologies for the belated reply , the swirly blue bases are half & half light blue colour over a white base , ie citadel ice blue or p3 trollblood base, and a purple paint i think i used liche purple.. a varnush of tim holtz clear rock candy crackle effect and when that dries , a wash of purple ink.. it cam out better on my two champions though ;-)

@ Peter , absolutely brilliant , really good to see them together mate , blight wing is just gobsmakingly good, really gross .. the orange like others have said is perfect.. i like the dry rusty Armour shoulder plate best though.. shame he flew away at the sound of thunder , he really is a yellow belly

Well i cant match Peter's brilliant group shot , as i never got chance to photo the warband before the game we played , but i did take some photos of them in game . Thanks to peter for the rat ogre shot
