Fresh paint is supposed to fail horribly on the first time out! Nice looking batch of games. I like the commissar in white, refreshing change from the somber blacks they normally get.

And while I had nothing to do with it, I’d like to apologize for my fellow Ultramarine. He does the chapter a disservice.

Yorkie for the WIN!
I wouldn't say he was a rules lawyer... What happened was we were playing four a side, so if you wanted to attack someone's figures and they were already in a conflict, you had to wait. With some people having 60 figures (me) and some having 20 (space wolves) things tend to get out of sync, but so long as we all agreed "Movement is done! Shooting start!" there was no issue.
I rolled my orders and waited to shoot at the Ultramarine. He then tells me I can't because someone further down the table declared a charge.
I say, "But I haven't had a shooting turn."
"He started charging."
"Has he moved his pieces?"
"No."
"Is it even the same unit that I want to shoot?"
"No."
"Can I shoot then, please?"
"No, he's declared his charge."
Bear in mind we were playing against staff the previous game who were resolving phases at different times with us as long as they were self contained.
I basically didn't get a turn for an entire round because someone got excited two metres away and wanted to charge with his 8 remaining figures.
If we'd been playing a tournament scene I'd have understood, but we were playing for fun. I guess maybe what one person thinks is fun, another doesn't.

Later on the same player tried to interrupt what I was doing to shoot me, and my team mate says, "He wants to shoot your [unit I can't even remember]."
"Well he can wait."
[Player takes a small step back and I feel very bad] I'm actually pretty timid when I'm calm.

evildrcheese wrote:Love all those Dakka Jets, I bet that was awesome.
He played them exactly as a bombing run should be done! Swept down the board without stopping and off the other end.

Nevelon wrote:And while I had nothing to do with it, I’d like to apologize for my fellow Ultramarine. He does the chapter a disservice.
Different people want different things out of a game. They wanted to win, and win hard. We wanted to play and experience the pieces we'd brought. This was the first time I'd ever played my flyer and Chimera.
One player said to us, apologetically "Everyone we played has brought a really... standard... list, we thought there'd be more competitive teams."
Unfortunately for them, this tournament was written up as a friendly one that encouraged new players to attend and learn.
Three teams got no votes at all for "best game". One had a warhound titan, one I think was the very competitive team, and I assume the last was the staff and therefore not allowed to have votes.
We came joint fourth, which considering we played the same team twice, we could only have come mid-list anyway.

Stff should have come and set him about being less rigid about things, and yes, many groups would see him being a bit "Lawyerish" in that argument. Otherwise, instead the staff fluid game like the previous one, all players for each side should be Move, shoot, declare charges/resolve charges, and no one shoots tiil all moves are done, etc.

I very rarely like to take picture this close to my minis, but here's an eye. It's a bit of an odd shape because this model is actually squinting and only has a sliver of eyeball, if you look at his official model, but I think that's crap so he isn't.

To start with I use a little Devlan mud brown wash in the eye socket. I think it gives a more natural and less "alarmed" shade than the black or brown solid paint.

Then I add the white, and wash again with the very tip of my brush.

Then the model sniffs glue. I mean I add the black oval for his pupil. In the past I've have left it here. But this is a special piece, so lets try something for the first time. God he looks angry.

Bam. Green. I wanted it to "pop" off the red eye and framing.

Put the pupil back in, and then add a white highlight.

You won't get to see most of this once his head is back on his body, because it's a very crunched up model. Have a look at Yorkie to see how little of his actual face is visible.

Loving the paint job on your Commissar's head there, Buttery. Eyes are such a pain to get right without making your mini look boz-eyed. He looks sufficiently hate-fuelled

I don't bother with the eyes on the minis who don't wear masks/full cover helmets.

Only downside is he's not looking at the thing he's holding, now the head is attached.

And because there's not nearly enough going on, I was reminded that I had this in my cupboard.
This is what is known as a BJD - Ball Jointed Doll amongst people who actually care about that. There's a big craze for them amongst young folk and anime fans and all that. They are usually humans, and painted with as much care as we'd use on miniatures. They are strung with elasticated cords to give a real sort of joint resistance like a living limb, rather than a simple ballsocket. I think they're creepy as feth and won't have them in my house.

Anyway a while ago a friend of mine bought a pair of these "Alicorn BJDs" to repaint and sell, and because he never got around to it, I ended up with one.
It's 3D printed and so light, that it's a bit like holding a tiny bird skeleton. I'm in gloves because it helps see what's going on with the white figure.

Please excuse my terrible kitchen tiles - they're not spattered with dirt, that's a hideous green and brown glazing pattern that the landlord picked out.

It really is quite beautiful (and fairly uncommon to see over here), but it's not very stable ( ) so I may need to put some weights into the feet. It also would usually be fitted with real hair. Because that's creepy and I don't want to, I'm going to look at sculpting and casting some in clear resins.

I really do not like the dolls. People also "wig" them by making them hair, and there's dolls out there who have wardrobes of clothes that cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars.
That's fair enough, but some of them are painted to have pouting babylike faces, and big alien deformed "cute" eyes. They give me the weeblies.

I will paint this one blue and candy paint metallics, like the moon pony from the TV show.
See me skillfully avoid Google hits.

Again, not a fan of the boogly eyes, but I like that multi-tone hair thing.

It's a sandstone finish, and if you look at the wing pic, it has small stepping to it. Nylon, can be sanded. More flex to it than some resin, but by no means soft.

It has sunglasses. I'm all sorts of bewildered. What's weirder is in Epic, they hang out in groups of four.
I've really enjoyed painting him, I may well do some Epic for fun. Got IG and SM.

Also the bigger commissar is going to be looking at Dakka for reference for his painting...

I'm not a brony.
I do trade and work with bronies in my day job, they're a very pleasant group of kids and adults to design for.

One is a good friend and sold me the BJD cheaply because I was interested in working with the material.
I also have some of the Slap Mini ponies to work on.

I did have some of the old ponies when I was very little, along with the pink castle and Power rangers. Mine was an interesting childhood.

Going to paint the little cat to match yours? You could paint up some of the spare epic things for it to be batting around on the floor under the workbench.

Looking forward to seeing this done. Once you finish, you need to do one of those infinite zoom gifs.

She's quite a hard one to do, I've done her tail so far.
She has one completely ginger tabby leg, like it was stitched on from another cat.

(Not me, the OH did Movember)

Needless to say, she'll be doing something behind "me" that I didn't notice. One of the last few touches as it will be arranged around the furniture.
