I'm interested in getting an army together with lots of terminators.  I want to know how successful Lysander armies are.

I saw a list with 5 terminator squads and 2 scout squads with teleport homers, how did that army do?  Would a more balanced approach to lysander work better?  I.E, 3 terminator squads, bikes, and some tact marines.

Lysander is a pretty much all or nothing style list. You either commit to the gimmick, or you don't do it.

It is highly effective. Yet it can be beat by people that have seen it before and know what's coming and prepare accordingly. The thing you have to do, is get over the fact that not everyone will be stunned into submission by the list - and learn how to use it tactically.

Alright then, 5 terminator squads it is.

It has a hard time winning against a lot of armies. Static shootie Chaos will essentially wipe you from the table in 2-3 turns and there's not really much you can do about it. Obliterators and las/plas squads make baby emperor cry.

That really, really depends. In tourney settings and against folks who have never faced the Lysanderwing, it is plain nasty. Folks have a very hard time adapting tactics to the 10+ Assault Cannon army of deep striking pain.

If you play against it pretty regularly, you begin to learn the limits of the army and exploit it (yes, it does have weak points).

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Go with the true Lysanderwing approach and get as many termies as you can for the points. But it is nice to occasionally mix it up a bit after you have played Lysanderwing for a while and are known to be so termie heavy.

Changing such things as adding a couple vindicators always throws people for a loop once they see you constantly bringing the lysander pain. This has been my strongest ally, is throwing people who think they know what to expect for a loop, but you do have to set a precedent first by showing up for a couple months with the same termie/scout aarmy to really make it effective.

I generally do this during tournaments (the few I have played this army in). Its the best time to take advantage of such chicanery.

I have only been playing lysanderwing for about a year and a half, but you either win big or lose big. Not much in between.

Tactics for this army arent really to hard to grasp, but it takes finesse to really master. Not to mention a bit of luck. This army is known for gimmicks, but for a gimmick army, it really does stand well on its own, unlike deathwing.

It does stand well on its' own, hence why it is pretty much the only Termie heavy Space Marine army.

Problem with Lysander is after people get used to it.

I'm somewhat dubious about playing an army that depends a lot on people not being prepared for your list. I prefer to play, in general, lists that are more all-around - able to take on any list on any mission, in tournaments.

Lysander is a heck of a lot of fun though, so don't let that put you off. Just invest in some other yellow space marines so you can mix it up, like someone said.

I just got to play against a "Lysanderwing" for the first time at the Gladiator. That is a very cool army, I can see why so many players fear the Yellow.

I'm glad to hear that it will be fun to play with. I generally play an all comer army, but I think this will be just the thing to play for fun. It also shouldn't take too long to get together.

Will, just be ready for the headache of painting yellow. That is the hardest color to paint well.

With the new Foundation paints, I bet we see more Lysanderwings, since the new Iyanden Darksun will make yellow much easier to paint.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;

I finished Lysander already. He looked so nice, he deserved to lead an army.

As Lord Sutekh said, the foundation paints will really help out.
