Yorkright: Thanks

Coh Magnussen: Thanks. I can do better than 'details', tutorial underneath

Camkierhi: You do read your own thread now, do you? Not to mention all the other absurdly talented people on dakka.... Thansk for the compliment though, my ego salutes you

gnome_idea_what: thanks! I agree that him riding the doomchicken + the molotov should make him stand out as a nob.

So, as requested, a chicken leg tutorial

Tools used: modelling knife, dremel, round file, superglue, tweezers

First off, a piccie of the plasticard I used (3 sizes of tubing, two sizes of plastic rod, plastruct I-beam):

Here are the bits as needed. From left to right: 2 large round tubes for the hips, 4 bits of tubing for the joints (knee and ankle), 2 short I-beam bits for the upper leg, 2 long I-beam bits for the lower leg (all the I-beam have their end bitz rounded to match the plastic tubes used as joints), 2 bits of tubing, filed to match the tubing from the ankle joint, two larger bits of tubing for the foot. You can add all kind of other bits, but these are the core of the build.

Here's how they look laid out, ready for assembly:

And assembled:

I find that sticking near to a 90° angle works best. It's how these legs work irl as well when it comes to a running or walking pose

Next, it's time to add the pistons, making it look like it might actually work . First you add the big cilinders: 2 bits of rod to act as anchors in the back of the knee, and the cilinders which will house what would be the moving parts irl. I've made working pistons before, but not on these guys since making them posable seems like going a tad overboard .

For the lower leg, just add some very thin rod to connect to the rod to the rear of the knee:

You'll see I cheated with the right one, since I cut the rod a tad short and added a slice of plastic rod to make it fit. Cheating is OK, it reduces the amount of swearing by a considerable amount .

For the upper leg pistons, I made a small t-bit out of the thin rod, then attached it (tweezers are your friend here):

Intrepid readers will have noticed I haven't attached the ankles yet. There's a simple reason for that: this allow you to test how the model looks and make minute adjustments to the pose after attaching the legs to the model, like this:

That's the basics really. After that, it's just adding details. Like this:

I hope the tutorial was clear, and that you like doomchicken numba 6. Now, off to the household chores. Adieu!

Excellent tutorial. Clear and very useful. Thank you for taking the time.

I do read a lot of blogs, and stand by my words, a grot with a Molotov riding across a battlefield on a giant robot chicken is the coolest thing I can remember in some time.

Terrific tutorial, CK! And lots of potential applications- pistons and working struts like this are something I was trying for on the Athena, and may be able to work into the SPG that the Phaethon serves.

Most welcome!

Well, if you put it that way... . Maybe I worry too much? Sometimes I think, t with all the great blogs over here on dakka, we forget to take a moment to admire our own work. Thanks for reminding me of that!

Most welcome as well! I did a (less extensive one) a whole bunch of pages back on working pistons as well, feel free to ask any questions if something is unclear.

Thanks, commissar. I need better feet than what I built for Meka-G, are those toes just glued to a solid bit of rod with a 'rivet' on each end?

Yorkright: Thanks! Only have shields for two more, but should be able to source a few. Or I can make them out of plasticard.

schank23: Sounds promising . That bit defintiely opens up some options!

Coh Magnussen: You're welcome. Toes are plastic rod indeed, plain and simple: bigger rod for the hinge, small rods glued on for the rivets, triangular piece of plasticard for the claw.

Having built a bunch of doomchickens, I wanted a changed of pace. I still had a mek gun in the box, and got some old vehicvles froma friedn, so I set to work.

I built one KMK right out of the box to get a feel for the kit:

Lovely kit with a lot of details, albeit rathetr expensive IMO.

Having a reference point, I trawled through my bitz box for a second one, and decided ona bubble chucka becasue I love the craziness of it:

I mainly used some plastic tubing, plasticard, and a dakkajet exhaust, combined with the bubblechucka pieces from the mek gun kit.

Comparison shot with the regular model:

Seems quite OK sizewise. next up is the crew - or whatver else tickles my fancy

I think I like that as much as the original. Once you get it primed and set them side by side. If you didn’t know any better it looks like it was a kit from the box. Great job on the conversion. I will be putting this in the ol memory bank for later.

Hey CK. Started on mine but still a wip. Made some decent progress so far but still have a ways to go. Not sure what it’s going to be quite yet but we will see what direction it goes. Thanks for the inspiration.

Didn’t see the need to start a new post so edited this one. Got a lot done tonight on it. Went with the traktor kannon. Seemed to fit best with the direction it took me. I hope you like CK. Some minor work still to be done again thanks for the inspiration.

Yorkright: thanks . the advantage of not having to make 5 guns from a single body: it allows for something a bit more specific with how i umagine a bubble chucka to look.

Gitsplitta: Thanks, tha's what I was aiming for

Camkierhi: thanks! They're ovely models, if maybe a bit too busy for my liking. They have a ridiculous amount of detail crammed onto them.

Meer_Cat: Thank you! I've been collecting GW stuff since the nineties, so that makes for quite an extensive bitz box

schank23: Those look great schank23! Is that a valkyrie engine as the main body of the gun? One thing I'd add is some cabling going from the engine to the gun, to tie it all together. Great traktor kannon!

Dr H: Thanks, that's the effect I was going for

So, finally got some 40k-hobbytime in . I volunteered (or got volunteered, still not sure ) as a props-make for a children-oriented LARP, and that's been eating some of y time. No regrets though, I've been having great fun making pirate-related LARp props

My 40k hobbying was dedicated to another mek gun, giving me three total:

And scale shots with the other two:

The tip is from a loctite glue bottle, for those wondering. C&C welcome as always!

Yep it is part of a Valkyrie engine. I think the hardest part was trying to figure out what bits would work and how to fit them together. Once I got started it went pretty quick. But you right I need to connect the cables to the engine. Gonna need to find my green stuff. Not sure where I put it. But again your work brings out the converting bug.

Love the crows nest idea in the new one.

schank23: thanks! And glad to see other people konvertin' as well, I love looking at all the stuff here on dakka

Drazaruk: most welcome, and nicely done on your big mek, very clean work! Oh, and it(' not stealing among fellow greenskins, it's lootin

MajorTom11: Army shot below . I did have a4-year hiatus (burnout will do that to you...), but my love of the little'uns has been rekindled lately

Camkierhi: Done! And I agree: a mix of kan, mek gun and trukk parts would be brilliant. I have plans to toss in a 'naut at some point as well

So, Army pics today! II started this army roughly 8 years ago, with a 4 year hiatus, and it's a nice to take a step back and look at how far the squeaky waaagh! has come.I should've come back to this sooner, these gyuys have great therapeutic value to me .

And, for closers, all of it arranged in a more aesthetically pleasing manner:

Hope you guys like the pics!
