40k Spring Break!

Empire Games is proud to announce its fourth Warhammer 40,000 tournament in our great new 4900 square foot location. Get ready for three rounds of pitched battle in Games Workship’s epic science fiction setting. This tournament will be focused on fun and fast-paced action. New scenarios! New terrain! Get your army ready, because you do not want to miss this.

At Empire Games we believe that nothing beats an exciting battle between two fun players with interesting, well-painted armies. The scoring system is built to reward players who bring varied, attractive, flexible armies, as well as to reward players for being fun to play against, as opposed to taking the game too seriously. The overall winner will be determined by a composite score measuring all these factors, as well as (of course) their triumphs upon the field of battle. The tournament scenarios will encourage armies which can succeed at multiple objectives, not one-dimensional armies
capable of doing only one thing. There will be prizes for the overall winner and for the best-painted army, and there will be other surprises on the day.

Last time 18 players showed up and did glorious battle, with Jamie Hatcher grabbing the glory of the Overall prize with an amazingly fluffy Necron army, and Craig Gallant's awesome Squat SM army taking best painted. Will your army be next? Show up and find out!

How much does it cost? $15 gets you in and gets you a pizza lunch.

Where is it? Empire Games, 33 South Commercial Street (lower level parking lot, in the same entrance as the Bike Barn), Manchester NH 03101. Go to www.empiregamesnh.com or dakkadakka.com for more details. Or call (603) 627-4263.

When is it? May 20th, starting at 11am sharp. The store will open at 10:00am, please arrive by 10:30am at the latest for registration. Players will be permitted a peek at the new scenarios before the tournament starts, so the earlier you arrive the better prepared you will be!

What should I bring? Bring your 1500pt army built for Standard missions, dice, a measuring device, rulebook and codex, and any templates you need. Also bring three or more clear and readable copies of your army list, showing points costs for all units and upgrades. Don’t forget a good attitude, an appetite for pizza, and an even bigger appetite for battle!

If you have any questions contact Empire Games at (603) 627-4263 or at our
website, www.empiregamesnh.com .

40k Spring Break Tournament Rules Packet

The overall winner of the tournament will be determined by total score over four categories. Battle, Painting, Composition, and Sportsmanship. While winning your battles is clearly the most important factor in a wargame, Games Workshop games are at their best when all of these factors are represented. And the best player is the one who exemplifies all these factors.

Game Rules
Following is a brief list of clarifications to rules which are not as clear as we might wish. If you have any other questions ask a judge or check the rulebook. If you have a question which significantly affects your army, submit it to the organizers before the tourney and we will answer it and add it to the list of clarifications. Judges’ rulings are final and will attempt to be consistent with the published rules, but we reserve the right to make a quick ruling (which may or may not be in 100% correct by the rules) in the interest of keeping the game and the tournament flowing.

Blast, Ordnance, and flamer templates can hit and kill models out of LOS if the template is targeted at and placed on a model in LOS.

Models disembarking from a wreck cannot disembark onto the wreck itself.

Drop pods which scatter on top of friendly models will stop 1” away, as with enemy models and impassible terrain

Battles Scoring
19 points will be awarded for each win, 14 points for each draw, and 9 for each loss. Each scenario also includes bonus points for secondary objectives, up to 6 points. For a possible maximum of 24 points in each game, and a total maximum Battles score of 75.

Painting Scoring
A major part of the hobby is building and painting the models. An attractive army is a joy to play against, while unpainted models are both less enjoyable and harder to distinguish on the tabletop. Each question on the following list is worth 2 points, for a maximum of 20 points. At the end of the day you will also vote for the best painted of your three opponents. Each such vote is worth another 2 points, for a maximum of 26 points from Painting.

1. In the judge’s opinion, was there honest effort put into painting this army?
2. Are ALL the models in this army COMPLETELY painted?
3. The above question is worth DOUBLE!!!
4. Are ALL the miniatures based up in a pleasing fashion? (Painted and textured as well)
5. Does the army feature insignia, camo schemes, or eye catching items?
6. Do the character models and centerpieces standout?
7. Does this army look like an army?
(This means the army holds together cohesively when looked at; models in one unit don't clash blatantly with models from another unit, unless that's obviously part of the concept, like a Marine Crusade Army.)
8. Was EXTRA time and effort put into the painting of cool details?
(This addresses conversions, extra details on bases, hand painted banners, kill markings on squads or vehicles, etc.)
9. In the judge’s opinion was this army painted to an above average standard?
10. Is this army one of the judges’ top three picks?

Composition Scoring
An army scores based on the following list, with a maximum of 26 points. Each Yes answer is worth 2 points, except for questions 9, 11 and 13, which are each worth 4. At the end of the third round each player will also vote for his favorite army of the three he played against. Each vote an army gets is worth an additional 2 points, for a total maximum of 32 points. All questions are cumulative.
1. Was the army list submitted in an easily read format, with all points values clearly marked?
2.  Does the army have a page of background or "fluff" included, giving an explanation or details of the force's history, theme, and story?
3. Does the army have no more than one of any given HQ selection?
4. Does the army have more than two Troops selections?
5. Does the army have no more than three of the SAME Troops selection?
6. Does the army have no more than two Troops units with the same unit upgrades?
7. Does the army have no more than two of the same unit with the same upgrades in any other category?
8. Does the army have EITHER no Elite units or one Elite unit?
9. Does the army have at least two Elite units but no more than two of the same Elite unit?
10. Does the army have EITHER no Fast Attack units or one Fast Attack unit?
11. Does the army have at least two Fast Attack units but no more than two of the same Fast Attack unit?
12. Does the army have EITHER no Heavy Support units or one Heavy Support unit?
13. Does the army have at least two Heavy Support units but no more than two of the same Heavy Support unit?
14. Judge’s discretion (2-4pts)- Is this army particularly well themed and interesting in a way that doesn’t already earn it the maximum 26 points?
For the questions asking about multiples of a selection from the Force Organization chart, units count as duplicates if they are taken from the same entry in the codex. For example, two Space Marine Terminator squads count as two of the same Elite unit. But a Space Marine Terminator squad and a Terminator Command squad would not be the same unit, because they have separate entries in the codex.
For the questions about unit upgrades, this refers to additional weapons or upgrades on vehicles, heavy weapons, grenades, squad leader upgrades, transports, or anything else you can buy for a unit other than additional members. Units given no upgrades at all do not count against you, even if the unit has no upgrade options.

The judge’s discretion points are reserved in case someone brings a fun and fluffy army which does not conform to the checklist for one reason or another. A Saim-Hann army with lots of jetbikes in Fast Attack slots would be a good candidate.

Sportsmanship Scoring
Sportsmanship scoring attempts to define some intangible things. What makes someone enjoyable to play against? What things do people do that make the game less fun? Sportsmanship scoring also attempts to tangibly reward people who make the whole gaming experience more pleasant, and discourage people from the opposite. With that in mind, this new sportsmanship scoring system is meant to make the actual scoring a little more objective.

Following is a list of potential questions. At the end of each round each player will be given a sheet with six questions. Three positive and three negative. Each person starts with a baseline score of three, and that is adjusted up and down based on the answers to these questions. So in each round you may earn from 0-6 points. Every player will have the same questions each round, but you will not know exactly what you are being scored on until after the round is over. In this way we hope people will be encouraged to be good sports all around, without making people go down a long checklist after every game.

When you receive your checklist, fill in your opponent’s name and the round number, but do NOT complete the checklist in their presence. We find that filling in the scores in front of one’s opponent leads to many people simply agreeing to give each other the maximum, whether or not it has been earned. Try to be as honest and fair as possible.

At the end of the third round you will also be asked to vote for your favorite opponent of the day. Each vote earns the player an extra two points, so the basic range is 0-18 with a potential maximum sportsmanship score of 24.

Was my opponent friendly and pleasant? +

Did my opponent bring up or remind me of a rule, which was to my advantage or his disadvantage, which I had not thought of or mentioned? +

Did my opponent display willingness to remind me to move or shoot a unit I had forgotten? +

Did my opponent make at least one tactical decision (a move, shot, or assault) during the game, which was done because it was “in character” for his army or unit, even though another move would clearly have been a better tactical choice? +

Did my opponent display willingness to cheerfully and accurately answer questions I had about his units, special rules, or army list? +

If there was a rules question or disagreement, did my opponent offer EITHER to play it my way OR to consult the rules or a judge with me? Alternately, were there NO rules questions or disagreements in the entire game? +

Did my opponent make an effort to play fairly quickly, to make sure we got the whole game played in the time allotted, or at least as much of it was possible? +

Did my opponent do something else not on this list (try to think of something concrete) which just generally made the game a more fun and exciting experience for me? +

Was my opponent generally an exceptionally fun opponent, a cut above the usual guys I play with, even if they’re great? +
Did my opponent sportsmanship that I aspire to myself? +

Was my opponent sullen, unfriendly, or otherwise actively unpleasant? -

Do I have unresolved questions about my opponent’s measurements or movements? -

If there was a rules question or disagreement, did my opponent react negatively to a suggestion to consult the rules or a judge? -

If there was a rules question or disagreement, and it was resolved in a mutually-agreed way (checking the rules, consulting a judge, etc.), did my opponent continue to argue the issue or complain about the outcome? -

Did my opponent get sullen, unfriendly, or quit the game if luck was against him or he was losing? -

Did my opponent play very slowly, delaying the game, possibly for tactical advantage? -

Did my opponent do something else not on this list (try to think of something concrete) which just generally made the game a less fun and enjoyable experience for me? -

Was my opponent just generally a significantly LESS pleasant opponent than average, distinctly LESS fun than most people I’ve ever played against? -

Did my opponent not come prepared to the game? Did they have to borrow dice, counters, tape measures, books, or some other basic piece of gaming equipment? -

The last three have all been some of the best local tournaments I've ever attended, mostly thanks to the great players, but I hope my efforts in running them have made them all the more enjoyable.

After playing at Adepticon, I'm chock full of ideas and excitement for running this tourney. Don't miss out on this one!

Last time we had 20 spots, got 20 names down, and several people made the mistake of calling ON the morning to say they were on their way and ask to be signed up. Gordon had to tell them the list was full. We wound up with 18 people playing, and at least four that I know of who didn't get to play. Don't let this happen to you! Reserve your spot today!

Your comp rules would make my genestealers cry (Identical troops choice #'s, identical upgrades). But a lot of armies would have some issues with at least the identical Troop types, so maybe it's a wash.

Unfortunately, there's that OTHER issue, about being 3000 miles away.

Have fun!

It's not exactly hard to put a little variety in there, nor is it a big points handicap if you choose not to, given the overall possible points.

I just like to do my bit to encourage a little variation in the lists, particularly at 1500.

Sorry you're too far to make it out. It was nice meeting you and chatting at Adepticon, though. What a great event.

4. Does the army have more than two Troops units?
5. Does the army have no more than three of the SAME Troops unit?
6. Does the army have no more than two Troops units with the same unit upgrades?

So how does this work for Imperial Guard? Does an entire platoon count as a Troop unit, or only the individual squads?

For example, if I took for my Troops selections 2 Infantry platoons, both with several squads equipped with Heavy Bolters and Grenade launchers, what would happen:

1) I would be penalized under 2, but not under 6, or;

2) I would be penalized under 6 and 5, but not 2.

"Unit" is unit, not force org slot. A platoon is not a unit, per the rules, it's a Force Org selection including several units.

That said, good catch, because I screwed up the phrasing. 4 and 5 should say Troops SELECTION, not unit. 6 should indeed say unit. I'm going to fix the wording.

So for an IG army with 2 Platoons as its only Troops selections, you would not get the check mark for question 4, you would get the check mark for question 5, and (if you had more than 3 squads equipped identically- variations in Sgt equipment, doctrines, or other upgrades can also avoid this), you would not get the check for question 6.

As with the prior events, Forgeworld models are completely cool repping regular codex units, and Forgeworld RULES are subject to approval by me on a case by case basis. I haven't turned anything down yet, but I saw some hideous crap at Adepticon that I certainly would not permit, so be sure to contact me ahead of time by email or PM.

Due to website registration issues, all registration will be by PHONE: (603) 627-4263.

UPDATE:

Signups are now online, via this thread and the similar threads on Dangerplanetgames.com and dorkamorka!

I'll update all the threads with the people who tell me they are coming for sure. Attendance is, of course, first-come- first-served. I will have a printed list with me at the store Sunday morning, so if you suddenly get free that day, feel free to call ahead to make sure there's space.  If you signup and then later need to drop out, please let me know on the thread or via PM, or call the store that morning.  If you need to drop out, we want to make sure we know the space is open for someone else.

So far I have:

Fred Dalzell
Rich Bourque
Mike Hrinishin
Jamie Hatcher

Anyone else who is planning to come, please PM me or reply to one of the three threads. I'll update them all today and over the next three days so we have a running tally.

Thanks to Fred for the heads up.

They've all been great tournaments, and this one will be no different. I got some great ideas from the events at Adepticon, and this going to be a lot of fun.

Final scores (adjusted for a math error or two on my part, thankfully with no affect on the rankings):

Jaime (Iron Hands/Non-Divergent C:Space Marines), 60 general, 20 sports, 20 comp, 16 appearance, 116 total. (Overall Champion)

Fred (Lost and the Damned), 32 general, 22 sports, 28 comp, 20 appearance, 102 total.

Craig (Lost and the Damned), 23 general, 22 sports, 22 comp, 22 appearance, 89 total. (Best Appearance despite playing against the ringer, though I as the ringer did not vote and give people bonus points). Craig also could not play in the third round and thus has no third round worth of battle points)

Mike (Tau Empire), 29 general, 18 sports, 22 comp, 20 appearance, 89 total.

New Scenarios.

Round 1:
BEACH ASSAULT (AKA Hit The Beach!)

The campaign across the archipelago has been a grueling yet scenic combination of sun, surf, and carnage. Your force has just moved out of the waves, making the landing under cover of darkness. This small island will make an excellent staging point from which to flank the main enemy force. Suddenly, a firefight breaks out. The enemy has landed here as well! To arms!

Objective: Table Quarters
Both forces are seeking to clear the enemy from the area. This is achieved by controlling table quarters. The table is divided into four areas formed by drawing horizontal and vertical lines through the centre point. A 6’ x 4’ table would have four 3’ x 2’ quarters.

To control a table quarter there must be NO scoring enemy units and at least one scoring unit of your own in the quarter. A unit can only occupy one table quarter - if it is spread over more than one quarter, roll randomly to see which it is in. The player that controls the most table quarters at the end of the game wins.

Scenario special rules
Dawn: The first turn is played using Nightfighting rules.
Wet Gear: For the first turn Fast vehicles may move no more than 12” in the movement phase, and other units may move no more than 6” in the movement phase. No unit may Fleet in the first turn. Any unit wishing to fire in the first turn must roll a d6. On a 1 the unit’s ammo is wet and it cannot fire.

Set-up
1. Divide the board into four quarters. Each player rolls a die, highest score picks which corner to deploy in. The other player’s deployment zone is the opposite quarter.

2. Starting with the player who scored lowest, the players alternate deploying one unit at a time until both armies are fully deployed. Units are deployed in the following order: Heavy Support, Troops, Elites, HQ, Fast Attack. No unit can be deployed within 18” of the enemy or within 6” of the center of the table at the start of the game.

3. Each player rolls a d6. Highest roll chooses whether to go first or second. The player with more points spent on Fast Attack adds 1 to the roll. If neither player has any points in FA, there is no modifier.

Game length: The game lasts for six turns, or until time is called. Warnings will be given when the play period is close to ending. If at all possible, both players must play the same number of turns.

The Spoils:
The winner of the mission scores 19 tournament points. His opponent scores 9. If the players tie, they each score 14.

Secondary Objectives:
Achieving each of the following objectives is worth an extra 2 tournament points.

1. If you have a scoring unit completely within 12” of the center of the table at the end of the game.*
2. If none of your opponent’s Troops selections are scoring units at the end of the game.
3. If you have more scoring units in your opponent’s deployment zone than he has in your own.

*If you achieve SECONDARY OBJECTIVE number 1, collect a “Raised the Flag” counter from the tourney organizer.

CHARLIE DON‘T SURF!

The enemy cannot possibly appreciate this island the way you do. The sun, the sea… It’s enough to make you want to drop napalm on them for 12 hours while you go surfing. No matter what, you WILL take this island. You will raise your flag (or crypt, or spore tower) over it and claim it for your own.

Objective: Field of Battle.
The game will be decided by victory points. Each player scores victory points for destroying enemy units as normal, and in addition, scores victory points equal to the value of each scoring unit he has entirely within 12” of the center of the table.

Scenario special rules: Infiltrate, Deep Strike, Victory Points, Raised the Flag, Surf’s Up!

Raised the Flag: If players have earned these counters in round 1, they may be used in this round.

Surf‘s Up!: The natural and scenic beauty of these islands can be distracting to those whose authority gives them any free time. ALL HQ units start in Reserve in this mission, and they MAY NOT Deep Strike. However, they may start rolling to come onto the table on turn 1. Turn 1: on a 4+, Turn 2: on a 3+, Turn 3 and later: 2+.

Set-up
1. Each player rolls a d6. Highest roll chooses which of the long table edges to deploy on. The player with more points spent on Heavy Support subtracts 1 from the roll. If neither player has any points in HS, there is no modifier.

2. Starting with the player who rolled lower, the players alternate deploying one unit at a time until both armies are fully deployed. Units are deployed in the following order: Heavy Support, Troops, Elites, Fast Attack. No unit can be deployed within 24” of the enemy or more than 15” from their own long table edge.

3. Each player rolls a d6. Highest roll chooses whether to go first or second.

1. If your opponent’s most expensive non-character unit is destroyed or fleeing at the end of the game.*
2. If you have a scoring unit in your opponent‘s deployment zone at the end of the game and he has none in your own.
3. If all your opponent’s HQ units are destroyed or fleeing at the end of the game.

*If you achieve SECONDARY OBJECTIVE number 1, collect a “Hardened Veterans” counter from the tourney organizer.

If you achieve ALL THREE of these secondary objectives, collect the Mystery counter from the tourney organizer.

Third round:

CHAMPION OF THE TIKI GODS

Over the course of these battles, your troops have reported seeing odd shapes and carvings in the rocks and trees. Strange events have shown that some force other than the usual chaos powers exerts influence in this domain. Your psykers have now confirmed it- these islands are home to a group of primitive Chaos entities known as the Tiki Gods. The commander who claims these islands will be their champion, and you are already on the path…

Objective: Annihilation
Each player scores victory points for destroying enemy units as normal, and in addition, scores victory points equal to the value of each scoring unit he has left at the end of the game. This means that you score the most points for destroying the enemy while keeping your own forces intact.

Scenario special rules: Infiltrate, Deep Strike, Escalation, Victory Points, Favorite of the Gods.

Favorite of the Gods: At the beginning of the game, each player’s most expensive HQ model must select one of the following gifts to be added to his profile or special rules. Inform your opponent of your choice before deployment.
+1 Leadership (may not go above 10)
+1 Wound
May re-roll any one (1) Reserve Roll each turn, whether present on the table or not.

Set-up

Units are deployed in the following order: Heavy Support, Troops, Elites, HQ, Fast Attack. No unit can be deployed within 24” of the enemy or more than 15” from their own long table edge.

3. Each player rolls a d6. Highest roll chooses whether to go first or second.

1. If all of your opponent’s HQ selections are destroyed or fleeing.
2. If you have a scoring unit in EVERY quadrant at the end of the game.
3. If your opponent has no scoring units on your side of the table at the end of the game.

Special counters

Raised the Flag

Congratulations, your bold efforts have inspired your troops to new heights of fervor!

Once during game 2, you may expend this counter to allow one of your units to auto-pass a Morale or Leadership-based test, BEFORE rolling the dice. If used for a Morale test in HtH, the unit will NOT be subject to the No Retreat rule this round. This CAN be used on a unit which would already auto-pass.

-----------------------

Hardened Veterans

Your troops have been there, killed that.

Once during game 3, you may expend this counter during either player’s turn to allow one of your units to re-roll any failed rolls to hit in either the shooting or assault phase of that turn.

---------------

Mystery counter:

WRATH OF THE TIKI GODS

In your success and arrogance you have earned the enmity of the primitive Chaos gods who rule over these islands!

Give this counter to your game 3 opponent.

Once during each game turn, said opponent may re-roll any ONE die. He may NOT re-roll part of a 2d6 or 3d6 roll, but may re-roll an individual reserve roll, attack roll or save in a group of several.
