Ok, so I wasn't gone for long....  It's been about a year, maybe a little longer since I've played a game of 40k.  I've been building a Fantasy Ork army (at least GW gave some form of new ork codex to me haha ::cries for 40k boyz: because the armies and rules IMO are better balanced.  (This is not a rant or a flame, It is just my opinion of the rules and has nothing to do with this topic!) So I wanted to come back to 40k for another try, actually one of my friends is selling an army that I always wanted to try, but never got around to it....

Here's the point:  IG, can it be made competitive?  Or am I doomed to see 9 marine speeders with assault cans, 2 libs with fear, min/max las plas squads and termis with 2x assault cannons drop and own my face time and time again.  If not that, some seer cncl of doom eldar designded to kill every ig troop on the board (if thats how eldar still do things now a days, maybe a change and i'll face some broken form of chaos (but from what i've been reading there will be a new codex to 'fix' them, hey maybe they'll get like 12 assault cannons per army too! haha).

So without complaining too much...  Are there any IG players out there having any luck?  If so how?

PS I would rather start orks, but they are my fantasy army, and I WILL WAIT for a NEW codex haha.

Cheers

Chris

That depends entirely on the local meta.

I have considerable success with my Guard army - but I don't play in a really cut-throat environment, so I can't say how it would do against the lists you describe.

In the Midwest, judging by the lists I saw at Adepticon this weekend, they play VERY solid lists.

This year the Overall winner in the team tournament was mechanized IG.

Last year mechanized IG won the Team Tacticians (best generals) prize.

The year before that mechanized IG won the Gladiator.

It will always depend on the local metagame, but as far as I can tell, tank-heavy IG is a very solid competitor.

Asmodai is right, it depends on the local metagame. But Gaurd have always seemed like a good proposition to me.

I play with a real relaxed group, we all play the 'under par' armies in a sense.  Well, even those of us who play armies that could be made into 'un-killable' lists aren't.  The main guys I play against are a Black Templar, sometimes a Necron, Traitor Guard (but not broken it's more like IG, just with a dmn here and there I guess he just likes the fluff?), Nids (Not Big bugz), sometimes a feral ork (3 squiggoths are a pain but eh whatever haha), and a 'Nilla Marine list (but the guy is new to the game and doesn't even know how to crack his list out).  I also am guilty of having a marine list that does have all of the things in my quote (9 HB/ASLT CAN Speeders, 2x libs fear/fury, min/maxed squads, termis with x2 ASLT CAN), but I will only use this army when I know I'm going to play against an army of a similar 'broken' quality....  But for friendly games against the guys listed above and you know the occassional competitve game....

For friendly games you can't beat the drama and fun of gaurd (except maybe with orks, but my bitter and broken psyche is not the best advertisement for that). Plus, they are interesting to play against, and just generally cool. Good model selection too.

IG range from Pathetic to Great. Replace your lasguns with CCW/ Las pistols and charge forward? You're going to be owned regularly. Spending lots of points on 10 man Vet squads and equiping your Officers with a ton of gear? Don't expect to be able to win. Got a ton of troopers or running a mech list? You can expect to enjoy some good close games. You won't win everything, but you'll have fun.

I was actually thinking tons of conscripts with commisars some tanks (basi x2 russ) but didn't know what to do from there.... So I know I'm not going to go mech, more so ton of troops ready to get executed to stand their ground, reminds me of the good days, the glory days, the days where I didn't have to worry about 1 sm lib making my army run in terror because it's a nickle a day for his overdue books!

Hellhounds and Sentinels could easily fit into that list too if you want more tanks while not going mech. You can never go wrong with more tanks.

Yeah Guard can be good, however I would stay away from the commisars and the conscripts. Conscripts end up in close combat, and block line of sight, keeping your heavy weapons from firing. Add in the fact that they can not kill anything, and cost too much. On another topic, Libbies are a pain, I have watched fear armys pod in, erase the commad squad with the banner, and then fear 3/4 of an army off of the table. Sure it was a gamble dropping that close to the board edge, but it really paid off. Personally I run my guard with COD and vet sgts, LD 9 in every squad. That helps a good bit, but it is not 100% secure.

Thanks for the advice, see I was thinking kind of like ork shooting for conscripts, 'if i get 100 shots, how can i miss that much?' kind of thinking haha... Just curious foil, do you run more cc (ogryns), tanks, or just plain troops?

Thanks for the help!
