I was reading over on AWC... and thought I would post here as well... I just wonder how many have this same sort of experience?

Me and my fellow team mates, Dokz Toolz, began working towards playing in this year's adepticon almost immediately after playing in the previous years team tourney... Aside from one member going to jail and the other joining another team (We were 2 players short, but that was only a hicup right?).

We played orks last year (team J2D2 for those who care), and for some god aweful reason we thought it would be fun to grind out another 4 games with orks this year (like running uphill in skates dragging a body). ORKS ARE DONE FOR US, horde armies take way too much work to roll and physically manuver.

Anyhow, we were totally psyched never the less!

... Even though each and every game was a struggle... That is how orks roll... PERIOD, we had the best time running away, whaaging and comeing back for more. Orks never tear anyone up on turn one, but you know what they can do? Have a bad ass looking warboss, run a heard of tooled up nobs... rip up rhino's and use them as trukks... they can drag a Leman russ back to the shop, replace the plugs, splash it red and roll out shooting! We gave our opponents not only a game... they had something they have never seen to look at as well!

For all our efforts...
We finished DEAD MIDDLE of the team tourney! #45. We could not be happier. Running that army against the Zilla Nids was like making a paper airplane out of rocks and trying to make it fly. We tried to make that sucker fly! It did not fly.

As a team we had a great time. We did not win, nor did we think we would. We met a bunch of people that also dig plastic soldier games and had a kick ass time.

I played in the individual 40k championships the next morning... Lord that's alot of gaming. I again finished right in the middle. I have no illusions of my 40k skill... Again, I could not be happier to have held my own with all those gnarley lists. And... again I met some really awesome guys that played well, but were still able to make me feel really welcome across the table. I would love to play people like this all the time.

I took something pretty critical home from all this.

Coming back into town, I was thinking what was the difference between playing here and there. It was clear to me with this one example:

During one of the games I got shelled by a barbed strangler... As I was playing about 40 eldar guardians and have that template splash me was not good I took it in stride. I simply took the template, placed it on top of about 4 full models and 4 partials... I nodded and said 6 fulls and 2 partials... After rolling covers and stuff I lost 4 guys... I gave the "sad face" for my poor guys got the boom stick in the face but whatever.

My point is... At my local hobby shop, as a whole, when a template weapon is hit, they make damn sure of what is in, and partial and maybe sorta partial... ARGH.

I think the philosophy is, "If you dont win, you are stupid"... Not only are they smarter, they are better as a person. Its like on a whole different level/style of playing. In fact, in comparison to what I experienced this weekend... It sucks!

I returned home on Sunday night and was up at the shop on monday night running the local 40k campaign.

I played two games. I decided to play them like I was in Chicago still and did not know my opponent and wanted them to be having fun instead of looking for shady play and watching for them trying to take that extra inch and cover those extra few models illegally.

I won the first and lost the second.

Most importantly, the games were fun!

See you all next year!

There you go. The whole point of Adepticon, wrapped up in a single sentence. Have a cookie.

What can help separate a good opponent from "that guy" is knowing what is worth arguing about. Are there some rules issues that should be contested? Sure (e.g., devestator squads coming in from reserve can't fire heavy weapons, even if you're standing on the board edge). Others, however, probably won't change things over much (e.g., how many of those teleporting Necrons are fully under the Meiotic Spore template, vs. how many around the edges are partial).

You guys looked like you were enjoying your orks, whenever I happened to see you on Saturday. Can't ask for much more than that!

@theblklotus, AMEN! I played 11 great games against 11 total strangers and had 0 rules disputes. Every game was well played and enjoyable, I would happily play any of those 11 guys again. I can't wait fot next years Adepticon.

I did have one serious rules debate... (they ended their point with "... the rule infers that..." ) I nearly fell over.

Other than that all went well.

Yeah.  It was a blast all in all, even if I did manage way to little sleep.  It was refreshing playing a ton of people I'd never played against, and a few armies I almost never face (LatD and DE).

thx Lowinar... that is exactly how it felt too...

My head was filled with : "Now I need to get within 24" to hit with a rokkit... I need 5's to do so... then I need a 2+ to wound... its in the woods... so it might make a save and there is only 7 of them to kill. 7 TMC's = 28 wounds, So, eer' we go...

OK... this is impossible, I will fight for sportsmanship I suppose."

I played orks too (well, like Russ making sure the world knows that) and we won 3 games, lost 4 and tied 1. And you know what?

That was our goal. Three wins. One better than last year. Two better than the year before...we weren't playing orks however, but still.

Lofty goals winning 3 games of 8 at AdeptifreakingCon with 100% orks in the Team Tournament. Crazy. Insane.

11 1/2 months of work. So worth it.

I might have to agree with you that the 11 months of building a "horde" army might be behind Bloid as well.....

As an Adepticon council member and judge, I'm very pleased to hear you say your "taking the lifestyle" back with you. It's the way we roll (for the most part). Did they have range to me? Maybe missed it by an inch...so I moved my model closer and there was no more dispute. That twinlinked devourer sure killed that one ork really, really dead.

Hell, our first round opponents (Lictor My Spores) let me fire a Grot Bomb as less than it's minimum 36" so I could put the LAST wound on their toughness 7, 5 wound Dakkafex. Yep. They let me break the rules. Why? It was the ONLY monster we could possiby take off the board. The shot missed. Even with a re-roll but Hell, they let me try.

That game also resulted in us actually TRYING to lose our last models because there was a tactical battle point for ending the game wiht "no models in your initial set-up". We had models still So we made sure they died Lictor My Spores (Which was their council-editted name.....) didn't have to shoot my last ork. They could have just ran away and denied us the battle point.

But, they didn't.

Ask Russ about our experiences with Team "Kryptman's Gambit" (or Gamble, or something) and how fun and totally fair that game was. We moved THEIR models and they moved OURS across the table (reserves can come in many places) to save us the time running back and forth. Best configuations...best cover placement...I moved them like I'd command them.

Freaking amazing.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Let me fill in the blank, I did not elaborate as I wanted to keep this post basically about how much fun we had... but here ya go:

"... aside from one member going to jail..."

Ok... Basically this guy was a redshirt and worked there for about a year. We all knew him and concidered him a pretty good friend, less than reliable at times, but a friend.

Upon return from adepticon rumor around the campfire was  that something huge was about to go down up at the shop.

about 2 weeks after Adepticon police raided this dudes house and found $10,000 worth of merchandise and several empty night drop bank bags... ALL GW. Turns out he was making false bit orders and just collecting all the stuff. GW's entire system of making bit orders was changed because of this ass.

As of now... He is still waiting for his court date I think and no one in our gaming group has talked to him since Adepticon last year.

Cheeky bugger.
I'm reminded of that Johnny Cash song one piece at a time.
Although, lets be reasonable- it's GW product, so for its actual "worth" we can shave off 90% of that.
It's more like 1000 worth

CONGRAT's ... you've acheived phase 4c of gaming!

(See my article on the subject: click here)

What is even more amazing, you acheived it at a competitive event. I too was amazed at the quality of sportsmanship at Adepticon. Perhaps it was because we weren't at the top of the pack trying to go undefeated, but all of our opponents were friendly and enjoyable games.

Maybe when seeing such a large tournament, reality sets in and people start to
think, "Ok, this ONE rules question will not make or break my standing in
the tournament."

We were up their at the top; my opponents remained friendly and enjoyable. (I hope they can say the same of us....)

Cheers to The Angry Toasters, who came from Canada, played a great game, and were extremely friendly and cheerful about fighting ugly bugs!

My team (Alpha Strike) had a great time also. We had largely great opponents that gave us great games, including some guys that drove in from Georgia and Mississippi. Thanks to all involved. I think I like the Adepticon tournament setting the best I've seen because it encourages tough, competetive lists while while still giving strong emphasis to respecting your opponent. I particularly like how Sportsmanship was scored. We upped our gamed from last year, and we hope to climb a little higher next year.

School will always be there.  Start saving now and make it happen.  The only thing that will stop me from attending, is the birth of my child, not a problem since I am not having any more(snip) or Death.  If i'm in a coma my teammates can just plop me in a wheel chair and use me as an army transport.

Adepticon best 40k tourney in the states, I dare say the world.
