Then WHAM, drop pods full of sternguard slam down, and terminators step out of the imatierium and start the wholesale slaughter of the foes of mankind. Just a very satisfying playstyle, that fits the lore and the rules, and played well.

10th company works like that for a lot of mobility lists. Cheep troops you can start on the table (often infiltrated on the good spots) calling in backup once the enemy shows up in force. With 9th ability to pop anything in reserves, I think we might see more of this kind of play, at least at the fluffy theme level.

Yes it's like what SM are supposed to do and everything. It feels good to play them this way on the table. I look forward to getting all these guys on the field. Missed the super cheap points (bar one game) for the Eliminators but they now seem less bent which is ultimately better. Same as Thunderfires, totally fine with them going up so much.

Thanks! I think I've said it before but I think your camo is some of the best I've seen. I do love DPM, it's just classic.

I've been away and I'm back now but not for much longer, I actually finished the last squad but haven't had the time to do some nice pics. Hopefully tonight.

Here are those finished pics..

I finished these guys in record time, only a week which is pretty fast for me..

Sarge. It was built this way as that's the only way the bits I had left went together, as this was the 3rd squad and I didn't originally plan to make 3 units, I used most of the good stuff by this point..

Still I'm pleased with the unit..

Slung rifle....one of my Scout Sarges had a stowed gun so it's nice to echo past builds even if only I know..

This guys pose always seemed a little forced to me but it's good enough I think..

I can see some of the Reiver chest icon still there, amazing how many bits you missed can be highlighted by pics...

Little camo cape. It works well enough I think, even if it is a bit basic...

Sniper at your feet!

Slightly forced pose due to the Reiver body but I think he's getting away with it..

Eliminator party! All your HQs are invited!

Really happy how these guys worked out..

My full Phobos contingent....these 15 guys have the same wounds and a better save than my 30 Scouts. Scouts going up to 14pts is a bit hard to swallow, I know things that infiltrate generally got a hike but it really feels like a lot for a squishy scout. Is this the beginning of the great squeeze out of Classic marines? I'm considering getting a HQ or 2 to babysit these guys, a Librarian or Captain are both good options. I'd take a Shadowspear Libby and may convert a Cpt from an Eliminator maybe?

Next up will probably be another Inter squad, I want to try a simpler edge highlight on them and hope to improve finish and save time, something I used on the last 2 Elim squads. I'm not happy with the blue guys at the mo and want to experiment a bit. I'm off for 2 weeks in a few days so may not get that much done before or after FYI.

Nice work on the snipers.

I’ve not dug into the points, but scouts have classically been a little underpriced for their utility. While the new phobos stuff has cut into their niche a LOT, I still think some bare-bones basic scout squads work well for grabbing objectives, screening, or with 9th grabbing secondaries and doing actions. While the phobos make have taken some of their jobs (like those eliminators you just painted slam dunking scout snipers) but sometimes you just need to scatter some cheep units around. And while the primaris get more wounds per body, they can only be in one place at a time, doing one thing.

As for a HQ, you need the full lot. All phobos, all the time. Doooo Eeeeeeettttttt. Of the stock ones I think the captain might be the weakest of them as a sculpt, but even he’s pretty good. Lt.s have issues with their gear, but have the sweet re-roll to wounds.

The new Elims are looking very good indeed, Randy.

I think more kit bash = more betterer especially for Eliminators as one tends to see the ubiquitous ETB bolt rifle types around a lot for obvious reasons.

Your DPM is getting even better. Funny that I was raving about Gordy's camo to you the other day

There's just something special about green DPM. Maybe it's a Brit thing; makes me feel safe and vulnerable in equal measure...

Looking forward to our next (socially distanced) Blackstone session - hopefully you will get your Phobos out for the lads.

Cheers.

Hiya all. I'm back from my little Cornish holiday. I found my Indongtimus, which the tracking code said 'delivered', left down the side of my house in the rain for 2 weeks. It seems fine though!

Taking your advice/being weak, I ordered a Libby which was also waiting for me! I had a voucher for eBay which is my excuse. It's a pricey model and the eBay cost is basically the same as new. Still got a NoS version for about £14 (thanks to random £5 eBay voucher!).

IGtR= wrote:Great work on the snipers. Nice to see them all together as a gang!

Thank you! Yes I was excited about that too. I'll have to do the Libby and then take pics of them all again......

Thank you. Yes I'm the same with DPM, some sort of resonance. Probably a Brit thing yes. We should get Crusade forces together and BattRep some games. Strong arm Mephistoned in too, slack barsteward. I want to see that Contrast paint we got him in action.

I'm pretty wreaked after my holiday and may see the other side of the family soon but hopefully output will resume soon. Back of cigarette packet math would see to indicate I'll be in the region of breaking even selling the stuff I don't want from Inderptimus, which was the objective. I think I'll build my new Libby soon whilst the DPM is still fresh in my mind.

I'm back in Bristol now after several trips away to see family. We (MLCS and Mephistoned) are thinking of doing a bit of a Crusade and we've been writing lists. We've decided to do 60 power and start with 30 power games. 50 and 25 felt too small. Mephi will use his unpainted Blud Angles, MLCS his dirty T'pau as advertised on his blog and I will use the glorious Ultras. I was thinking IG would be better for variety but I only got 2 games in using the last book and want to try for at least 3 with the new one. Also it's a long time since SM were contenders and I'd like to use them at least a bit during this time. I can avoid the mega cheese easily enough and have a 'friendly list' I think.

Captain
Storm Bolter, Power fist

Libby
Phobos Flavour

Inters x 5
AGL, Power fist

Tacks x 5
Plas. Combi Plas

Tacks x 5
Melta, Power Axe, Melta bombs

Dread
MM, Heavy Flamer

Reivers
Knives, Grapples

Eliminators
3 x BSR

Thunderfire

Razorback
Lasers

Razorback
ACs

Should be good. I've taken some new units to try them out and I'm determined to give Reivers a solid go. If they don't get a bone in the new book I will stick my foot through my 'Dex and send Jes Goodwin the bill. I've got nearly all of these guys done and only need to do this guy from scratch..

Phobos Libby, I've never used one, anyone had experiences of them? I think the Obscuration discipline could be interesting.

Also, after a lengthy discussion about how it's hard to find a Techpriest for my IG cheaply (and a nice model), MLCS bought me this as a pressie of the eBays. Very kind, thank you. It's a Datasmith thingy and will do very nicely for the IG. And it's in great nick.

I will make a Combi plas too, I think I've got one laying around, they are too good not to use now. Toying with the idea of a Combi Melta for the other squad too...

Mephistoned's BA are a pile of crap. We did a little intervention last week and made him get them out (and his models) and arranged them into a Crusade force. We will probably end up painting them for him too *sigh*. We got him some Contrast paint and spray as a pointed Birthday present and I (at least) am interested in using it!

I can tell you, from experience, that Contrast Blood Angels Red over the 'warm' contrast spray primer (Wraithbone primer?) is bloody ACES. VERY easy, and looks GREAT. Speed through those Blood Angels in no time flat!

Cool, I've never given them a go. I just ordered some paints and treated myself to a Contrast black and Chestnut (Guilliman Flesh!) as I think they'll be useful and a few more colours I'm short of. The black should be useful for the Angles too. I did manage to undercoat my Phobos Libby so work may commence on that soon.....soooooon......

I think I'm just going to be boring and get the Ultra specific bits; Adept of the Codex, as who doesn't like more CP? and Santic Halo because 3++s are nice and I'll get a deny against Mephistoned's Libby Dread. I think I'll save the rest and see how things develop..did you do anything exciting (and clever) with yours?

Lets see

Captain WL trait - Champion of Humanity
Captain - Upgrade to CM
Primaris Lt. - Relic -9” aura
Primaris Lt. - WL trait - Adept of the Codex
Intercessors - Upgrade to vets.

Remember if you want to hand out WL/Relics/Upgrades you need to do it when you add them to the roster, or they level up. And you need to do them with RPs, not at the start of the battle. And while they might not be free, you can have multiple WLs running around.

Ok cool. Yes I'm not taking the CM upgrade in the interests of remaining friends with everyone. I was tempted by CoH for my Captain but I'm happy as is I think. Feels right.

Speaking of preparation for Crusades, I got out these little beauties..

These are Mephistoned's boys....some real old school action in places..I currently spraying them with Gray Seer (though it was Wraithbone..) we'll see how they progress, I'm not doing a big job on them but am attempting to update them a bit, Contrast paint on standby..

I did start these at the beginning of the School Hols, they'll probably be shelved to facilitate Crusade stuff, like painting half someone elses army..

I did start this guy, the only model (of mine) I need to do for it (barring a Sarge upgrade)..

More on this all soon...

I've pressed on with the BA speed painting. Contrast is weird but I think good.

Gray Seer'd. I does feel like something that will really obscure detail. These guys already have a fair amount of paint and I'm not stripping them.

First go with the BA Contrast. Bit uneven. Will probably do 2 coats..

This is 2 coats of red and 2 of black contrast (on the black areas obvs).

Near finished. I added another layer of highlight after this. I tidied up the red with Mephiston and then did a smidge of edge highlighting with Evil Sunz. I'm going to hand over to MLCS who has offered to do transfers (I don't know what I'm doing with them) and hopefully the basing to keep it consistent (he's already done some lovely Sang. Guard).

Moderately pleased with this I tried to just do it better. I've also got a full Tack to do..

These guys. Note some of the 'new' BA models in there after we made him build some a few years back, they got sprayed red and then left. More importantly this guy.....

This is 'Orc Hands'. He's like Mephistoned's totem/mascot. Clearly a masterpiece we decided to include him as is. I'm thinking of doing a similar scheme on him too..

I did a bit of work on these guys, snapped a few off bases and built up the ground behind their heels so they were at a better angle and less likely to snap off again. I also gave the guy a knife back, I even had a 2nd Ed one to replace the broken one.

Having another go I got a nicer finish with a thick coat and then a thin one. I think the models being less gakked up helped too. I left the back at 1 coat so the variation in tone is more visible...

These guys are nearly done and look a bit better. This was about 3 hours work which is pretty fast. It takes me 30 mins to do one Intercessor's edge highlighting (one layer and I do several). I did add a final Troll Slayer bit to these guys as well.

The last half is sprayed and I'll see if I can continue to improve with this recipe, more soon!

Great progress on the Bangels. Second batch looks much better. I'll collect them and some transfers next visit. I'll stick a couple of Tau ones on the odd shoulder pad and we can see if Mephistoned notices.

Death Company for one...

I wanted a bit more of a varied group of colours and a bit more Red than usual too..these guys are finished mostly and are being based by MLCS, I've some more pics to post once uploaded etc.........mostly. I've also found myself doing them to a much higher standard for some reason.

He wants this guy as his Priest..

I cut off his base tab and increased the base to a 32mm as all his jump guys are on those..the buried chainsword is off an Sentinel..

This is the kind of magic we are digging through...some classic (and extremely heavy) stuff in there..

I'll do some more pics soon as I'm doing the squad markings on the 15 Tacks and finishing their bases off ATM too, so lots of these guys are actually finished!

Here are the nearly completed DC..

They are done to a better standard than the Tacks etc and I think they deserve it..

They are all armed pretty randomly and I like that, we aren't power gaming our Crusade and Power Level has some room for abuse especially with a unit like DC..

I enjoyed painting them actually, so was happy to put in the extra time (and my friend, the owner, will be pleased)..

They aren't perfect but much better than the Tacks I did earlier for him! They are off to be based now and so should be back next week. Most of his units are getting there now. The Baal Pred has gone off to MLCS to be done and I'm starting on the Sangy Priest. The Libby Dread does need to be built and painted at some point..

Here are yet more Bangles..

There's a Rhino too..

This Tack squad is mostly all contrast ...................................................mostly

They're not too bad for maybe 8ish hours from basecoat..pretty quick for 10 dudes..I added Company and Squad markings for them, which is very odd in Bangles..

The mighty ORK HANDS stands ready to slay the enemies of the Emprah! I kept most of the original 'scheme' and added awesome fire design to his Combi Plas/laspistol/knife.

Other Tack, note kneepad squad markings, they don't work well with MkVI legs however...

These were done by MLCS some time ago when we last did an hobby 'intervention' I've added some static grass so they fit the rest of the army..

These guys were recent speed paints of MLCS, shown here for completion..

I even found time to start painting the dude I need to complete my Crusade force, I'll need to rearm 2 Sarges too..

Once the DC are back we'll only be short, 1 tank, 1 dread and 1 character for his little 60 power force, not bad at all...hope you like!

Don't jinx it.

I've plugged away a bit more at some characters..

For the Bangles I've started my jump Priest..there was some odd thing where the paint went all blob-by and I resorted to using some washing up liquid in the paint to try and break the surface tension. That didn't work completely so I washed him under the tap with more detergent. Eventually I managed to get paint to actually sit on him. Not sure what that was about as he was undercoated in the same Gray Seer as the rest of his stuff...

I decided to make him redder and then thought maybe not. It was a bit late and it would take a few coats to cover that and it had too many already...

Anyhoo I think it's worked out ok. I did him to a higher standard as he's the HQ for my mate's Crusade but white can be a dick and it's not like I'm getting paid...still I think he'll do and he's off to get his shoulder transfer added and I'll do a finished pic for him later..

My HQ is progressing too. Nearly done here. Think I'll leave his eye plain white for spooky magic. I am thinking of a slight very pale blue wash over that area and perhaps a bit of his sword, I normally don't go in for that sort of thing but am considering it here. I want to do a bit of a design poking out from under his shoulder covering, thinking maybe the classic book logo?

I've got the DC back all based up nicely and I'm thinking of adding a bit of extra detail to the Sangy Guard MLCS started (as I have no life at the mo) as it won't take much to add a lot to those models. So more on them soon.

More painting has been happening..

I've slightly updated MLCS's paint job on these, I've painted in the gems, weapon ornamentation and purity seals...

Helps them pop a bit more...worth it I think and I've a bit of free time atm...

The DC are all based up and finished now too..once the Priest is back (he's having transfers added) there will be only the Pred and Libby dread left to do...pretty good..

This guy is very nearly finished too. I'm going to do the fiddly detailing next. I will add a bit of a glow to his eyes as I can't face trying to paint pupils and not sure the blank white works..I'll add the same to his sword a bit. I'll keep it subtle and not a big OSL thing, partly because I don't know how to do that and partly as I find all that a bit gauche.

I've a Sarge I'm going to rearm and another I think I'll build from scratch as I don't think the existing Sarge will look good with the conversion. I'm adding combis to both of them as I'm running them as 5 mans in Razors and so won't have the punch of a heavy. Also they are only 10pts now so well worth it I think.

Thanks dude. I'm doing the finishing touches to him atm so the final pics will be soon. Hopefully he's the best yet.

I'm also getting on with the Sarges.

Lefty is an old Command squad member I built for the end of the 4th Ed Codex. The 5th Ed one limited the Com Squad to 5 after I'd just finished a squad of 7. This guy became spare till an opening for Sarge opened up as the Battle Company progressed and he ended up being permanently assigned to Squad 2. He got rearmed with a Power Sword awhile ago (a nice 2nd Ed one at that) and now I'm going to replace his (scoped!!) Bolt Pistol with a Combi Plas as his combat squad will tool about in a Razorback in the Crusade. Righty is a new build (duh), I've a few nice bits left over I was thinking of making some more Sternies with, mostly bits from the 'new' Tack box and the Betrayal at Calth box I was donated by Alex ages ago.

Here's the new Plas and Righty has a classic Power Axe for close encounters (A). I really like his MkIV helm but I want the studded pad in case I want to swap him about squads (no unit insignia) and so part of me thinks a MkVI head would be better?

Also facing other way (B)..makes less of a big deal about his fancy Ultra upgrade shoulder pad on the other side however..

MkVI version (C), 4 & 6 are my favourite armours..

Final variant (D). I can't decide. I think I'm leaning towards (A) any thoughts appreciated. Answers on a postcard.

I'll try to get some glamour shots of the new Phobos Libby soon so stay tuned for that.

Either helm works. Beakes are classic, but the Mk. 4 is a close second. Looking the same way the gun in pointed is the way to go.

Yes I am totes down with some space beakies. I got on the 40k train with RTB01 so all SM are beakies in my heart of hearts. 4 is nice too.

Nevelon wrote:Either helm works. Beakes are classic, but the Mk. 4 is a close second. Looking the same way the gun in pointed is the way to go.

So option (B)? Yes maybe, I'm thinking the MkVI helm too, over half my squad leaders are already in MkVI so some variety might be good, I've none in MkIV.

Speaking of beakies I painted this guys gun...

Here he is commanding his combat squad who'll live in a Laserback with the Captain (in my Crusade list)....

The gun is massive (that's what she said), and this is a comparatively compact version, I think most of the disparity is his child's torso and legs. It's hard to unsee once you've spent some time with Primaris..I've decided, looking at these pics, to repaint his sash thing too. I wanted it to be like a Praetorian purple but this is more of a Praetorian pink...

I tarted up his painting slightly too, he was started at the end of 4th Ed Codex sooo whenever that was...1986?

Squad 2 is actually the owner of a Razor too so the numbers will match. I need to get out more.

So I think I'm going with this config, he's the last guy to paint for my Crusade army barring any last minute 'New Codex' alterations. We are roughly waiting on the new book to start playing, giving everyone enough time to paint up their stuff (or have it painted for him).

I've finished my Phobos libby now and will do his glamour shoot once I've vaselined up my lense.

Bristol!

Finished this dude finally..

Shazam. He means business...'This is what you get when you hand in over due library books!'.......folding to peer pressure and did some glowy eyes.

I stole the 3 coloured keys off a pic I googled of a nice Raptors version. I also nicked the idea of a tiny red box on the end of his purity seal/shopping list thing. I think that addition of colour helps the model be less dull looking. Obviously he's supposed to be sneaky but some bling is nice on a character model to help him look more important than the guys he's leading, hence using some gold on him which is absent on my other Phobos units. I also did a bit of the old classic book on fire (bad signal for a librarian to be sending surely?) with an 'U' in the middle of it. Again to have a bit of gaudiness and help him pop a bit more (pop-pop).

I did a bit of a half hearted 'glow' effect on his sword with a few thinned washes of increasingly paler blues. I think they need to be much more thinned and more layers but I'm fine with it. He took long enough without adding tons more time doing an effect you can't see from the 'viewing angle'. I'm not a fan generally of the 'crystal' sword thing either, bit too Eldar for my tastes. I always paint the bits on force (and power) weapons bronze/coppery to be like conductors channeling the coruscating nimbus of energy...

Arse shot. I need some sort of diffuser to get rid of the glare, it's annoying. Still you can see the camo OK. And his signed copy of Harry Potter and the Weekend of 'Experimentation'.

Unintended 'dynamic' camera angle here. Here's a few of the Sarges and the Libby hanging out trying to remember where they parked the Impulsor.

Hope you like him, he's the last Phobos for a while, he's now leading a cohort of 15 which is pretty good. He's reporting for duty for my Crusade force too. I've started on the last Sarge to finish it off, so some pics of him soon and then maybe a army shot for my 60 power force. Now the SM book has a release date our arbitrary start point is approaching and most of the armies are getting close to finished now. Which means we may be forced to actually 'play the game' rather than just sound off opinions loudly on the internet. Bleh.

For a second I thought that you made the camo out of overlapping multicolored Ultra symbols. Which would be a stupid amount of work, but awesome. And Codex adherent.

Looking really good as is. I’m sure he will do you proud leading your crusade.
