Epic stuff. A brilliant model brought to life by a fantastic paintjob. I hope you are proud of him as I think he's one of your best yet. The edge highlighting is precise and the huge areas of cammo are clear and scaled really well. I was worried you would have been corrupted by the recent foray into codex divergence.

Ha! I was just going to do an hilarious Community reference over on my plog. Glad I didn't as Internet rumours that you and I are the same person pretending to be two people with one friend each are starting to gain traction.

Looking really good as is. I’m sure he will do you proud leading your crusade.

Now I have to repaint him. Yes I found myself doing crescents and hooks as random blobby shapes don't look as nice or give nice definate edges. It would have been really simple to add the top capitals and change a crescent into an 'Upsilon'.

You mean we're not the same person? I've never seen us both in a room at the same time. Thanks though, it's high praise. I am pleased with him and do think he's one of my better ones. Now to start on my new chaplain 'Starburns'.

I've nearly finished my Sarge and will do pics probably tomorrow. I also found myself swapping the HB on a Speeder for a MM not sure why. That should be it for CRUSADE prep for me bar a bit of terrain and any post codex alterations, I'll be interested to see if the power levels alter again (for Tacks for instance) now they're getting 2 wounds and other changes.

That is a really nice pattern on the camo. Managed to look like camo without breaking up the model so much that it looks "muddy".

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Thanks! Yes I think the definite shapes helps this a lot, blobs of colour splurge into each other and get muddy.

This guy got done...typically I can now see a gold splodge I need to fix

I'm happy with him, he looks the business. And here I can see a huge mold line on the Axe. Still it'll be fine from the normal viewing angle..I made him a purity seal too as he needed a splash of colour and I was out of plastic ones..

Here's the guy he'll be replacing, still he might get busted out on occasion...

This guy got his sash a bit 'de-pinked'.

So that's the last of my stuff done for CRUSADE! The new book will be out in a week and could wreak everything however...

Here's the squad all done..I don't generally go in for 5 mans but taking them up to 6 dudes would cost another 5 power for 1 guy so that's out...the whole 2W thing will help and they will be in a Razor most of the time..

Other unit, they'll be accompanied by the Captain so will be slightly more of a force....

Here they are with their rides...they should be mobile, relatively shooty and punchy (with the Cappy in there too)...hopefully they can take care of business...

As a 'drying time' project I swapped this old Speeders HB for a MM. Not sure that I plan to use it but it could actually be good now, very mobile and able to grab objectives and seriously hurt most targets. I may have to build my other one (after like, 10 years?).

Bit of a dick to get off but we managed it without having to rebuild anything...I think I made this in 5th when HB/HF loadout was cheap as chips and it used to have a lot of fun flambe-ing 'Stealers...good times...but I always wanted to swap it over and make a Rockety one with the HB..

Might be worth it however I'll probably magnetize the rocket launchers....happy with this one though..

Final point for today....

This guy got his shoulder transfer and basing completed and is ready to lead the Bangles in their CRUSADE! I think that's all their infantry completed now so that's good too..

Next I'm starting a bit of terrain MLCS built to use in our games some more on that next. Hope you like the stuff above, the CRUSADE beckons....

In further prep for playing games, I've painted this terrain piece created by MLCS..

He got it very wreaked off the eBays and rebuilt it to look like a repurposed derelict vehicle using plasticard and odds and ends...

So I thought I'd paint it blue. Shocker. I watered down Ultramarine blue to make it look like it was a faded colour....I wanted areas of the grey undercoat to show through..

I did a thinned Regal blue wash to shade it..I also used a thinned Scorched Brown to cover all the metal areas and a less this thin coat to do the mud areas...

I then added rusty areas with more Scorched..

A light drybrush of Boltgun was added to the metal areas...

Then very thin washes of Orange and then Gulliman Flesh (CONTRAST!) were added to the metal areas and all over, drippy bits too...

I did very faint old chapter markings too...

I wanted the hatches on top to look like they've been moved and welded back on as part of it's Mad Max style re-purposing by some Scavvy Gang after it'd been knocked out (in 1st Ed, probably by a Conversion Beamer)....

Here it is done. I added some graffiti too....

Some obscure 80's comic references here...and anti Imperialist symbolism..

General commentary on the state of the game..

Some ballsy artwork and the obligatory 'clean me'. I would have written 'I wish my wife was this dirty' but didn't think I could fit in (that's what she said)....

It says: 'Ork hands was 'ere' which is funny to about 3 people.

I added some areas of static grass to it as well, I'm annoyed as I wanted to add some flowers but can't find my stash of them anywhere, so imagine there's a few tiny ones scattered about..

I hope you like it. It was really fun and was quite quick to do. There is a ruined Chimera that MLCs has made (making?) as well so that might be a thing soon...I've done some painting on SM as well, starting a 3rd Inters squad, mostly as a test for a better blue highlighting system and I've started bluetacking my 6 Inceptors, hopefully to benefit from the new system, so more on them soon....

Yay it looks great. Thanks for painting it.

I need a break from Kroot so I might put the chimera on a base and sort its turret ready for you next week (if you like).

The graffiti looks really good, I know you have to be good at freehand to make tiny writing look like it was written by tiny hands.

Not that I don't love painting terrain but I should prioritise Mephistoned's Baal and the last bits of Tau.

Forward brothers! Reclaim the Rhino could be a good 'Relic' mission variant. Pity it's such an old version otherwise it'd be able to self repair.

I finally received my Codex; (yay) a week late (boo). But it's an interesting book, so many small changes. Thunderfires got another kicking which was probably too much now. I may swap it out. One of the candidates for replacement and the next thing I was planning to build anyway, is my Inceptors (Jumpydudes). I've had these on sprues for a while now and I've been looking forward to building them for ages. I also want to get some gravis units done as they're really good. Also as I'm behind the 'meta' with painting, when I've finished something, it's usually just been nerfed. Need to try and use some stuff whilst it's still good!

Here are my 'blue ones' from Conquest's reprint of the Dark Imperium sprues..

I decided I hated their fadgey guns so I swapped them from the 'proper (and Gray)' sprues I got all the way back in the 'Wake the Dead' box...I left off all the crap off them too so they look much lighter..both the Sarges got a Gravis pad from the Ultra upgrade sprue too..

Because I'd used the Ass bolters I was required to use the plasmas, this is fine, I think they are good now (especially with 'blast') and not too expensive..I mixed the gray and blue squads to make them more varied...

Here are the Plas dudes built. I'm having them as walking as the flying bases are gash and this is more sensible I feel...I think that may be my last bit of Necromunda bulkhead chopped up there...

I've been painting these guys in the drying times of all the GS on the Jumpydudes, I got a new colour; 'Glacier Blue' from Vallejo which I've thinned and used as a 2nd layer of highlights on the armour, seen on the first 2 here...

I think it gives a nicer edge highlight and will only require 2 layers which will be a lot quicker too...

I should have these guys finished up soon and I can concentrate on the Jumpies...

I'm currently locked down as a friend I spent Sunday with, our kids were playing, tested positive for the plague, I've a test on the way so we'll see what happens with that. I'm feeling coldy atm but OK. I'm stuck here with my son however so that's challenging as I can't even take him for a walk and if I do get bad he'll be a bit stuck (he's 7). Still fingers crossed and all that.

Fun times.

Thanks, I'm feeling OK and am waiting on test results. I doubt it's positive as I'm not bad really.

I have finished these guys though...I will probably use this squad in Crusade, I have another identically equipped but I think I prefer this one..

Punchy Sarge. Extra vindicated on his PF now, TH are a bit crapper. I gave him another text purity seal with illuminated letter, like the Phobos Libby..

he got his Sarge bars too..

Trooper and AGL dude. Those grenade launchers cost now but as they can be fired additionally, I'm fine with that. Blast can make them more interesting and 1st turn Doctrine is good too. No idea why grenades are in the Dev Doc where only launchers will be in range, surely Ass Doc would be more of a natural bedfellow. Grenades seem to me to be more of a pointblank assault weapon.

Other troopers. Pleased with the new style of highlighting, seems to be a fair bit faster and I prefer the finish. I changed the stones on the bases from a blue-gray to a more limestone colour, I also prefer this. I did it originally on the Eliminators to match with all the terrain on their bases and the KT terrain I'd recently finished..

This is my 3rd 5 man squad of these now. I've another 5 ready to be built too. I think I'd like to boost one squad up to 8-10 as they'd be great moving forward using Trans (very modern) and double shoot strats...good for putting pressure on and grabbing objectives. I think I'll make a 10 man Ass Inters for the same reasons...

So I've started the Jumpydudes but not by much, it's hard getting to paint when locked down with a 7 year old and once he's in bed I'm about ready to follow suit. Still I'm pleased with the above guys and am looking forward to the next squad, I think I will swap them in Crusade (with the Thunderfire) as they'll be much better anti-elite that I don't have much of (and my friends DG list is super cheese) and a much more mobile. Having a DS threat is good head games on your opponent too.

Hope you like.

Looking good!

I’ll still probably build a TH sarge, but with magnets. Fists I think are the way to go. The hammers are equal with fists these days IMHO. More damage for less AP seems a fair swap, especially when that damage is overkill a lot of the time. And fists are stable at 2. If they had cut the price down to match the fist, I’d mix and match. They didn’t. Paying last year’s price for this years performance; it’s GW balance.

The AGL is not a grenade type, so doesn’t get the dev bonus. Just the Tac one, which is where you want to be anyway. Assault type. It’s a combi weapon without the -1 to hit for shooting both sides for 5 points. I’ll take it. I think grenades were stuck in dev doctrine just to balance them out and the fact that they needed to go someplace. Not that they were useful. They are basically a flavorful afterthought anyway. I occasionally toss them, but mostly they just look cool and clutter up dataslates these days.

Yes classic balance, here is a side grade you pay more for...

I derp'd out there, yes being Assault makes them much better as it will be 2 turns with the improved AP. Seeing as they are 5pts rather than free/1pt I suppose that's OK.

It makes it almost impossible to get the Dev Doc bonus on grenades. Yes I assume they had to go somewhere but Assault would have been cooler. Dev Doc is nasty enough only having Heavy types.

That wrecked Rhino is aces. It amuses me to see the IG Basilisk cannon bitz inside the top hatch. I wonder what they were originally going to try and covert!

The bit of Bassy was in my bits box. The Rhino was an ebay rescue and I tore off and moved some hatches and filled the cavity with junk (that's what she said) with a mind to creating some kind of 'junker' crawler terrain.

Also - Blue Space Marines look nice.

Hello.

I've been remiss about updating this for a bit. I've had 2 weeks of kid of school and this always makes it tougher to fit much painting in. There has been some progress on my Inceptors however...

Early stages...I cut off the cables for the Plasmas as I felt they made them seem too big, I glued the little top bit in and it looks like a little power pack.

Base coated...

Mostly done..I gave the troopers silver rims to look more tough-ish

Thought I'd add some honour markings to his knee..

This guy hadn't had his 2nd layer of highlights on the blue yet..

This is where I'm up to. I'm pleased with how they're looking. I was thinking of adding upwards streaks, mostly on their legs, trying to look like heat damage from an orbital drop. The darkness of my base colour will complicate this but I think I'll try it. I'm a bit worried about trashing all this effort though. I am also considering heat damage on the plasmas too...any thoughts? I've started a quartered red and white knee plate so far will add a 'U' over the top, is it too bright?

Good to see you still painting away. I’d not worry about going too bright. Weathering is always a risk. How lucky do you feel?

A bit?

I finished the knee cap, I think it's fine now, not too jarring/bright. I've done his sarge bars and insignia too.

I've added heat damage to the plasmas, which I think has worked out OK given the limited space...

I've added some light damage with some sponge weathering, I glued a small bit of sponge onto a dead paintbrush which helped get it in the right places..

I think I'm going to try a bit of streaky burn damage on their legs to look like burns sustained from low orbital drops. These guys are nearly done now, yay, I've a Libby Dread to do for the B'Angles which we've just built and these 2 projects would complete my and Mephistoned's CRUSADE armies! Yay.

I'm off to start the basing, will cover the bases in polyfilla to give it a nice texture...

Heat stress on the plasma came out well. It will be interesting to see how well soot streaks from reentry show up on your very dark scheme.

Spoiler: It looks crap.

Here are the finished pics of these bad boys....

I think they came out well..

Sarge. Knee honour marking for most improved attendance.

Heat damage can be seen here and some 're-entry' (anyone seen 'Moonraker'?, worst Bond joke ever) burn damage on shins and backpack mainly. I didn't really pull the trigger on it as I was concerned about obliterating all that painting for something that might not work...

My Sarges get sarge bars, red helmets? please. He gets a white one to signify veterancy and bars to denote rank...

Fancy 'Gravis' shoulder pad. I had to trim the flange a bit to make it work with the backpack as it's 'supposed' to go on the other shoulder. I keep the chapter symbol on the right (models perspective) as the Codex Astartes (Rogue Trader Rulebook) intended. Then you don't have the problem of MK VI guys (with the studded pad) and Terminators oddly having the symbol on the other side as everyone else...I don't know why they changed it with the introduction of those new fangled MK VII marines (Strike Force boxset)....I may be showing my age...

Pew Pew...I much prefer these guys not on the flying bases...they look less like they've crapped themselves..

Added battle damage as these guys are supposed to wade through fire...

I'm now remembering I was going to sponge on a bit of mud colour to these guys, do you think they want it?

More heat damage. I painted the metal plate on his base (old Necromunda panel) in Scorched Brown and then roughly drybrushed orange onto it. They washed with Argax and another DB with the orange. I added a few chips in silver. I like the orange contrast with the blue, helps it pop (pop)...

This is the EtB guy, the others pick on him, which is mean as he has plenty to offer..

He has a purity seal which I failed to notice before the painting was reasonably advanced, I've cut it off the other EtB dude (they're identical), how would it survive sun orbital drops? Stasis field!

He means business...

I'm happy with the conversions and think the painting came out well. I'm still practising with 'thinning my paints' and they new colour I'm using for the last highlight but it feels a much better process and I'm getting better at it. As a reward for doing these guys I let myself build a sprue of Assault Inters, woo. MLCS and I also built this:

Who will get a 'functional' paint job to complete my friends Blood Angle force for the CRUSADE we'll probably not get to play. The above Inceptors finish of my revised force and I'll try and do a family shot of them all soon...I've also started the next 3 Inceptors as it seems to make sense to do them together. I think I'd add another 3 eventually to have a 4 guy plas squad and a 5 bolter, so that might happen at some point, I think 3 lacks the weight to really be a threat...

I hope you like and more soon(ish)......

Yes I much prefer my headcannon to the new fangled way of doing it. The 'Red Helmet Issue' is a particularly annoying, as it came from nowhere and suddenly was cannon, don't know it if it was a 'Eavy Metal painters experiment or something...

I've been ticking along with a few things...

Getting there with these guys...thought I'd just paint them now as I've just finished the first squad and it will all be fresh in my mind. Not sure if I should leave the re-entry burns out or double down on them and try to get them off better (pnar-pnar)...

In other news my converted standard bearer LT has had the basics done...

And his flashier new colleague is being planned out. I wanted to convert him like this as I didn't really like the pose of the original Inderptimus LT...and again, who says Reivers are useless?, I've used a head and arm of theirs in this conversion....

I built these guys as a reward for finishing my Inceptors. I think I'll make the other sprue into Inters with ABRs as I don't want it toooo obvious that the sprue is just repeated. I need to decide how to do that and it would probably mean a new box of Inters as I'll need a bunch more bodies (and ABRs) and I'm thinking both squads should be 10 man. It would give me 2 scary units to charge up the board and capture stuff, both able to be Transhumaned and the shoot/fight twice strats are good options too. They would be as cheap as SM get too really.

I'll finish off the Inceptors and then do my mates Libby Dread which will finish both Crusade Forces which is pretty cool. Not sure what to do after that? Maybe some characters, as the LTs will be ready and I'd like to do my Medic too (as they are amazeballs). I'd also be tempted to do a bit more Medieval Perry twins stuff I've had lying around for ages, that army only need 2 units to be done (with another for completeness) and I may even be able to play that one day now a friend from the old days has resurrected himself.

I can tell you from experience that it’s stupidly easy to convert the assault intercessors into ABR ones. All you need to do is clip the pegs off the torso and glue new arms on (doing something for the empty holsters is easy if you have the parts as well, but a small detail if you don’t). The question is how many spares arms you have from prior projects.

Remember that crusade forces like to grow, so if you are looking for new projects, keep that in mind.

Yes I'm looking forward to building both units really. A rummage in my box (Oooh-Er) shows I can scrape 5 ABRs or so and I've 2 extra dudes I can enlist too. Still I'll probably need another box of Inters as I'll need 10 more guys with 5 more ABRs.

Thanks. I didn't build it, MidLifeCrisisSuit (MLCS) did but it was really fun and relatively fast to paint. He's painting a wreaked Chimera (he built at the same time) at the mo. He's matching the scheme to my IG, the swine.

I was interested in making that squad now so I got my bits out (and after that I made some Space Marines)...

I had a spare bolter hugger and this guy who was going to be my 2nd LT. I'm now thinking he can be the Sarge of the ABR squad (as the LT vacancy went to the fancy new Inderptimus one), he's already got the ABR and I put him on a normal size base (ie not a 40mm)...

I swapped the huggers BR for an ABR (the slung one) I've borrowed an Auspex off my unfinished Hellblasters, I think I want them to keep it however...I'm running out of Power Fists now but found this one to go on the demoted LT...

Another instance of Reivers being useful, this is one of their knife arms, I may keep this as it lets me use the Auspex on the HB...any thoughts?

The fun bit, the ABR huggers. I think I'll give them one more Assault body and then the actual Assault Inters can get one more too. I'll have to shelve these guys till I get some more Inters to finish both units...that will be 20 dudes to push up the table/outflank, could be good.

On the boring painting front some more progress has been made on the Inceptors and the Libby Dread is getting undercoated so more on them next...

Thanks! Yes I'll wait till I get some more Inters as I'm not sure I've the bits to make another M79 version, so will have to make do with M203 style ones.

I've started building this guy..spaced his Reiver arm and pinned the nifty UM upgrade power sword, it does look Master-crafted...

I've also cut off the hilt of the sword in his scabbard and attached the now empty scabbard to his hip in roughly the intended place...I also built him up a bit, he seemed a tadge short...

Nev will be pleased to see I even added a spare pistol handle into his once empty holster...

Here are my LTs pretty much built and ready for the painting queue/mountain....

The Inceptors are nearly done now, I'm working on the basing...

I treated myself to a couple of these by Zinge Industries, lots of shell casings..

Classic pollyfilla base texture...

Here, with the base nearly done, I've added a few of the middle sized casings....I think they'll be effective...

I also built this guy, thinking of adding a Reiver skull helm, may see how it looks..

I'll finish the Inceptors and do pics of them next!
