Good good.

And that feels better. Tied together with some more tissue and some mud'n'rocks at the bottom. I've got an idea of how I'm going to paint it now.

I'll let it fully dry/cure overnight and then switch my desk to airbrush setup tomorrow and get this coloured in.

I remember seeing that. Cubes of polystyrene foam, melted into interesting patterns.

Thanks CommissarKhaine. Paint brings it further together...

Also included scale reference of the Deathmark and marine re-paint that I'm working on for my personal army thread.

You may be able to see where it's going now with the mud'n'rocks at the base being sucked up into ghostly grey and glow-y tendrils, with all the junk bits being their own colours (and likely rusty metals).

Thanks chaps. It's good to get such enthusiastic responses to it, as it was a bit of a failed project that's been shoehorned into a new life I didn't really know if anyone would like it.

Graven', yeah he's probably about to be "eaten".

Onto the next project. It's a birthday present so you are all sworn to secrecy. Shh.

To follow on from the Gandalf piece I made previously, we have more Hobbit miniatures. Should be fairly self-explanatory:

Much more work yet to build up the base and then install the figures.
And they are tiny figures, they barely come up to a space marine's waist... which does make sense, they are halflings. But it does make for some tiny models.

Thanks ckig. Good to hear.

They are not. These are from Mithril miniatures. I would link the website, but it doesn't appear to be working (It was about a year ago). They are very old sculpts. Look for their "Classic 32mm" range.

dsteingass wrote:Ahh! The Riddle scene! Very cool!
From their poses and Gollum holding a fish, I'm placing them just before the riddles.

Nothing to show today, I've mounted it on a polystyrene foam base and given it another layer of tissue/pva. Will update when it looks more exciting.

Red': Shows it's always good to give it read over after a break, I suppose.

Slightly more exciting looking...slightly.

I added a few more spikes of rock to enclose them and make the scene more cave-like without needing to build a cave.

Much more to do just to get this done. The rock texture needs more to start with, but I have a plan.
Need to install the figures first...

And for scale here's Bilbo and Gollum next to a 1992 metal marine:

Thanks chaps. Yeah, I said they were small.

and, Cam', these are 32mm scale rather than GW's 28mm. And that's an old metal, little-marine. So we can forgive the base.

A challenge they will be, but that's the point, isn't it?! Good thing I am a patient person. I have just over a week to finish though.

Texture.
The tissue base has been smeared with plaster and that dabbed/patted with the smearing finger to give it the texture (as I did on the "Crash" piece recently).
Bilbo and Gollum have been installed and I've started adding more texture to the ground.
Once that's done the majority of painting will be quick, until I come to the miniatures...

Never too late for praise. Thanks.

Ta. Not much at all, I weighed down the middle of the piece while the glue (mostly) dried. There is/was a slight up-turn of the outer edges once it was mounted on the polystyrene foam, but that's mostly fixed with the application of plaster and sanding of the centre. With the slightly rounded edges it appears to float by a mm or two all round. It may well get some felt pads underneath anyway; makes it more shelf-worthy.

Yorkright wrote: Cube is fantastic, really looks like it is about to move about. Color choices are as always good.
Thanks York'. Colours are such a pain to choose when you have a mixed item/material build like this (and the "hide" piece I built a while ago). Getting the balance right from all angles is important, and I spend a lot of time just looking at the primed model, and after adding each colour's basecoat, thinking about where the next colour should be to get that balance right. So much thinking without any progress, but it's worth it in the end.

The cave got it's primer and basecoat done today:
