<h5>"Speed of light</h5>

The company has also pitched a portable laser rifle, which would be lethal, to the US Army. It would weigh about fifteen kilograms, would have a range of more than a mile, and could have numerous advantages over existing rifles – better accuracy and the ability to hit a moving target at the speed of light."

The plasma shield is just the shock rifle from Unreal Tournament.   Awesome.

For those Americans reading this, 15 kilos is 33 pounds.  Try humping THAT around the field for a few klicks; it's not going to be popular at that weight.  I'm sure that ruggedness is also a concern;  a little dust on the lens will ruin everything.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Not clear in your post, but 1 kilo = ~2.2 pounds, so 15kilos is about 33 pounds. Heavy. More like a "man-portable" laser, or maybe something that could be put on a tripod, or better yet a vehicle like the Bradley or Humvee.

15 kilos = a little more than 30 lbs. Personally for that kind of weight I would rather have a saw and ammo.

I did the conversion in my head (which took a second) and then forgot to type it in.  Post corrected.

Darnit.

HEY! Not all us American's are afraid of the Metric system. Shoot, we fire 5.56mm bullets out of our main assault rilfe... not 0.22" bullets

We just prefer to use an older system so we are the only one's who know what we're talking about

It keeps our enemies guessing.

It's .223 by the way

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.

Do a little digging and you'll also find that they're also working on melta technology. The US military plans on starting to use them in Iraq. They're based on EMP technology and project a sightless, soundless beam that doesn't physically harm, but causes a top layer of skin to burn and is intensely painful. Its supposed to be a crowd control weapon. Its always niced to see more sophisticated ways of keeping the masses in check. Of course in 20yrs we'll find out they cause skin cancer, but oh well.

Burning skin that is intensely painful doesn't do physical harm? I'd say that's physical harm.

Think of the Bene Gesserit test in Dune.  "Put the crowd in the box..."

I thought melta weapons were fusion, not microwave.

That was covered in "Future Weapons" a couple of weeks ago.  I have to say that it sounds really nice.
