Hi folks,

This may be the wrong forum but its the best one for this topic i think. What I'm looking for a bit advice on the merits and flaws of the above 2 games. What I'm not looking for is a totally biased opinion that either game far outranks the other unless it's true.

I know the scales are slightly different but that wont matter as I plan on using 1;72 scale minis for the games(i know it wont be legal in tournaments but its only a small group of us playing)

so which game is more/less complicated, which has more variation, which is more accurate, which is more'fun'.

I know I'm opening a massive can of worms here, so thanks for any replies in advance.

If your group of friends ever grows and would like to play other people or decides that WW2 gaming is so fun they want to try thier hand at a event, you might want to consider FOW just for the models they have available. They do have everything you could want and the price I feel is cheap.
Lots of WW2 gamers use thier models and other rules because of the selection and ease of assembly over 1.72 scale model kits. Hope this give you something to think about Good Luck.

Rapid fire will better fit in with your planned scale.

If you want to play Flames of War you need to play 15mm, though you dont need to buy from battlefront.

Are youn planning to make your army out of old plastic kits?

Ouch just realised how old this thread is.

Front page on historical goes too slow.

Meh, it's not like the thread was off thr front page, and anything that gets discussion going on historicals is a Good Thing.

I will chime in that 15mm based for FOW will work fine with Rapid Fire. And there are cheaper 15mm than Battlefront (though BF does a good job).

As to difficulty in 20mm kits, there are a number of simple kits such as the Italeri kits that are very easy to assemble. 20mm also tend to have much better proportioned infantry. I prefer 20mm for skirmish/squad/platoon level where individual troopers will be doing things. Although there is no reason you couldn't individually base some 15s, they just don't look as good. ANd plastic 20s are cheap.

I would say rapid fire ! the range of models is massive!! the rules are a bit slow at the start but you find if you play regularly you can pick them up! great game i would strongly recommend. check out these links!

The beauty of historical gaming in general is that within reason most rulesets can be used with most scales. To be honest any historical ruleset worth its salt has multiple scales in mind.

FoW may well use 15mm officially, but can just as easily by played with 20mm (1:72) or even 6mm (1:300) with just slight scale/range changes.

My 15mm WW2 collection is built with FoW in mind as its by far the most popular WW2 ruleset at my local club. But I've used it in games of Blitzkrieg Commander as well.

In terms of which is the better rule set it all depends on what you want from your rules. Levels of realism/detail are down to personal preference and of course time/space constraints are a major factor.

FoW is primarily aimed at people who want to play a game in a matter of a few hours and want a flowing enjoyable game which 'feels' like WW2 without getting bogged down in the detail. Nothing wrong with this IMHO but it has attracted more than its fair share of snobbery from some circles.

i would also say Rapid-fire is more historicly based on fighting actual battles of world war 2!

I am not familiar with Rapid-fire, but there is nothing I saw in Flames of War that prevented you from doing historical refights. Many of their late war briefings have rules for all sorts of formations. The points system is for those of us (ME) who are to lazy to do enough research for a refight. I just like to plunk my toys down and go "PEW-PEW".

NECROMANCY!!!
I don't know would a 2 year split between posts count?

Since this is still something that can be discussed though, does it still count?

There's no such thing as Necromancy in the Historical forum.

Does anyone actually play Rapid Fire (or any other sustem) with Flames of War figures?
