Thanks 'boss. I suppose it does with the enclosing nature of the spiky bits. Unintentional as I was going for a cave-like enclosure, but the claw-like undertone would also aid a feeling of danger for the scene.

I forgot to add this as an "in other news" on the last post. So, with pictures...

In other news:
An update on the airbrush extraction hood I built, and the use of filters.

You will remember that when I build the hood I acquired some cooker hood filter "paper" to try out, and found that it was a bit too dense for my fans to pull air through efficiently.
Since then I've been using the hood without a filter.

I thought I'd take a look at the fans and see what state of a mess they are in with all the over-spray that's been pulled through them.

The photos below show you the configuration of the fans (as a reminder), and what they look like now.
Looking in though the collapsed extraction hose (left photo) you can see they are very dusty in appearance. Yes, paint has settled on the fans.
However, a quick poke (no scrubbing needed) shows that it is literally a dust.

So apart from occasionally "needing" to dust off the fans, there doesn't appear to be a need for a filter. I did suspect this, but it's nice to have it confirmed.

Hi Dave. Plants are unplanned at the moment, but there will be some. Got to get the rocks done first, and the pool around Gollum...

Washes and dry-brushing incoming...

Washes and dry-brushing done...

I've tried to give the rocks some variation and layers with blue, red, green and brown washes. The ground has had more brown to give it a muddy appearance (so plants can grow, and will be emphasised around what plants I add), the pool is slightly more blue (though I'll likely tint what I throw in there for water).

Next job is plants as some may be in the "water" and so need to be there before I add the PVA (as the bulk of the water) and take advantage of the hot weather to dry it quickly... I'll probably snow as soon as I put it in... blooming weather...

Don't get me wrong, I think it's very cave like. Maybe what I should have said was clutches? It just evokes the villainy of the scene. Like "ahah! You are trapped in my cave of being the badguy. Here, see? The diorama pulls your attention to me, Gollum, the sinister guy. And you? Hidden in the dark clutches of my cave lair. Mwahaha."

Thank you Dave.

I totally got you, 'boss. I would have liked to have said it was intentional to give it that feeling, but I was only focused on making rocks. It's nice that it does give that effect though and I'll take it.

Turns out it didn't snow. The weather did something worse, it stayed hot AND humid; this means evaporating the water from the water effect is taking ages...

I did add the plants though, and I've painted Gollum (and started on Bilbo).

I thought that I'd done a good job on him until I blew up the photos, I may revisit some bits of him and try to smooth out some more of the shading.

I'm hoping for the "water" to come up to the edge of the rock that Gollum is standing on, that's quite a bit thicker than it is and that green will be in the (quite likely, murky) depths.

Thanks Rudlug.
I didn't want to paint this up as another dark cave (like Gandalf before) and so I'm envisioning a skylight to the cave.

You will notice that the plants are all around one spot and not spread about the cave evenly.

Hopefully, future highlights and shadows will enhance the effect.

Bones is not a bad idea, I'll look into it if I have the time. Deadline is approaching, I'm loosing tomorrow, and may or may not get more days in the following week. Aiming for Tuesday at the latest, and can't rely of getting until Friday.

Thanks ckig. Yeah, that's the idea for the plants; break up the grey. There are a couple of patches of moss-like things made from some patches of static grass that I saved from an ebay-save model. I might actually look into buying some static grass, I'm quite impressed with how it looks...

Thanks Graven'. What you see of the water above is meant to be the depths of the pool... However...

...The water hasn't got any better or easier. I added another layer on Sunday morning and it still hasn't cleared now on Monday night.
I'm handing it over tomorrow and will revisit and finish off the water once it's cleared.

The rest is as done as it's going to get, so pictures and forgive the "water":

Getting them both in focus at once has proven difficult, so these are pairs of photos with the focus on one or the other:

And close-ups of both Bilbo and Gollum:

I'll post update photos once I've had a chance of completing the water etc. one day.

Onto the next project...

Thanks Gits'.

Thanks Dave. Yeah, just the size of these figures are a challenge to work with.
I may not have mentioned it, but I did plan the positioning of the two figures and the surrounding rocks to allow access all round them. That part of the plan worked out well, and also gives good POV photos. However, I did have challenges with shadows being cast on them when I wanted to hold them at a particular angle; sometimes I had to hold the piece upside-down.

I'm really pleased with how Bilbo's face came out. Blending skin-tones on something that small is a tight balancing act between tanned (too much brown in the shading), sun-burnt (too much red/pink in the base colours), and jaundice (too much cream/bone in the highlights). But I kept at it and he worked out well in the end.

Not sure what is next. Stay tuned...

Coming soon...
Spoiler:

I've pre-ordered Dark Imperium and will be building, modifying, painting and selling the models.

I can't say I'll be the quickest to market (as somehow there are people that seem to be able to produce painted models on the day of release), but they will be unique.

I was going to knock up a couple of quick paintings to keep me going until the box arrives, but I couldn't get the inspiration to do 2D; nothing grabbed me.

So, what do you do when your collection of board-game tile frames reach critical mass...?

...You accidentally start building some Infinity terrain, of course.

Why, Infinity?

Observe the hexagonal shapes... they like that kind of thing, I believe...

From how it's shaping up, this is going to be some kind of garage/workshop.
Possibly some gantries along each side,
Heavily detailed interior,
Something on the roof (it won't stay flat and boring),
See how it goes...

I'm still building up the structure of the walls. Many layers of card to give strength and detail.

Great idea here, I've often looked at the empty card frames from board / tabletop games after punching out the required elements and thought about their potential. I recall making a TARDIS floor for my son's Dr Who figures with the card frames from Space Hulk (2009 re-release) and did similar as you by gluing clear plastic over to make a 'solid' floor - not sure I have that piece anymore though, think it may have gone in the recycling eventually... Inspiration abounds though...

I don't play infinity but do like the looks of this building project. Personally I enjoy playing on a table with good looking terrain and well painted armies, do you get to play on regular basis Doc? Pretty sure your opponents must get a kick out of seeing you set up the table and putting down some amazing armies.

Thanks Graven'. I'll have to peruse my Manga collection to get some ideas when it comes to it.

Thanks Aetare.

Thanks Ruglud. I'm just going with the flow at the moment, Looking at the shape it's forming and the shapes I have on hand, and seeing what fits.

Thanks Dave. It's been a while since I've done any casting, but need to shift some stock first. Although I'm nearly out of toilets, and the mould needs redoing.

Thanks Yorkright. No, I've not played any tabletop wargames. Not that I don't want to, but I came to the hobby from Airfix etc. model kits and the model building is what I enjoy.
I don't know anyone (in the real world) that does play, or even collects models at all.
Also, if you have a look at my (mad) army blog, you'll see that I don't have a standard army that I could hope to convince a random to play against if I were to find a local gaming place.
And at any rate, that army is still not at a point that I could create a playable army from (lacking in HQ choices for one, but that's not the only thing). I am creating a "codex" of a sort for the army as I go, but that is also a work in progress.
One day, once the army is ready (and all painted), the rules ironed out, and I have a table worthy of playing on*, I will try out learning the game (40K in this case) and maybe finding someone willing to play against it.

*I also have a very small collection of terrain for myself, and plan to make a modular table, but don't have the space to store it all, or the "need" to create a table (as I don't have one army to play with, never mind two).

Everything you see in this blog is either for presents or for sale (now or eventually). The stuff I keep for myself is all in the other blog.

Progress.
The basics are done inside. Now to fill the smaller gaps and start to think about what this will contain... a floor would be a good start

A roller shutter door is also something to do...
