First post and army list advice needed

IG 1500

Doctrines

Troops-Storm Troopers

Skills-Close Order Drill ,Iron Discipline and Light Infantry

HQ

Junior Officer- Honorifica Imperialis,Iron Discipline and a Vet with regimental standard  =101

Elites

Stormtroopers-2 plasmas ,vet sarge with plasma pistol and deep strike=91

Stormtoopers- 2 meltas and deep strike=75

Troops

platoon1 and 2 are identical  so total 762

Command squad-Iron Discipline and 2 plasmas=65

Squad 1-Lascannon and plasma=95

Squad 2-Lascannon and plasma=95

Squad 3-Light infantry and flamer=76 (to be used as meat shield)

Remnant Squad-Light infantry and melta=50 (to be used in the most annoying manner possible)

Heavy

3 Leman Russes with Full Heavy bolter loadout=155*3

This is simple theory hammer before the long task of constructing.  Also want to know what a list like this would be like to play with or against.  I can see most games being lost with poor deployment of the meat shield (I'd rather not have conscripts but i feel this is what the list needs instead of light infantry)

Thanking you in advance Sabo

(this list has 6 points left over and I am unsure of what o spend them on)

Welcome to the glory of the infantry, Sabo.

With just a couple exceptions, what you've got is a very solid core of models, from which to grow your Guard. Las/plas line squads are the staple of a solid firebase; the Leman Russ is a high-utility tank. Here's a few things to consider:

1) Doctrines. We'll talk about Storm Troopers a bit in a moment. But you may want to take Drop Troops, just to boost your deployment options.

2) Counter-assault. You acknowledge the need, with your light infantry squads, to shield your line squads from marauding assault squads. This can work, by holding up an assault for a turn or two, and then you (try) to shoot the assaulting guys to pieces. You may also consider reworking your platoon command squads a bit - massing 4 plasma guns or 4 flamers in a single unit (and then hiding that unit behind terrain until they're needed) can be very effective and reducing an enemy assault. Rough Riders are also a pretty effective single-use counter-assault unit. Otherwise, proper spacing will at least prevent massacre-chaining.

3) Storm Troopers. Consider Hardened Vets instead. Better buy all around; that 4+ armor isn't going to save you after deep striking.

4) Regimental standard. Standards are very useful. The Regimental Standard, less so. Very characterful, but not especially efficient.

5) Heavy Support. If you're going to take 3 Russes, consider making one of them a Russ Demolisher (lascannon/plasma cannons). There's enough 2+ armor out there to make the extra platform useful, and the Demolisher makes a wonderful area-denial piece; few elite troops will want to advance within range and LoS of it, as the inevitable losses will hurt. You'll have to scrape up a few points (Regimental standard, storm troopers vs. Hardened vets), but it's probably worth it. Also, it provide a little more variety.

As far as fun goes, I like to fit a bit more mobility in my Guard lists. A couple Chimerae add some objective-threatening capability, a few more armored targets, some nice anti-infantry fire, and (most importantly) let me do something other than stand-and-shoot all game long. Your opponents may appreciate this latter point.

Not true.

Pg 57 IG dex, "This doctrine is available to any guard infantry unit w/o a transport vehicle at +10 points per unit"

Note, "is available", not "must be taken by" as you see under the mechanized doctrine.

Thanks for the advice Janthkin the following changes will be done

Doctrine-Stormtroopers gone and replaced with drop troops and veterans (still had a slot left)

** points saved from not taking regimental standard (unsure if allowed to actually say)

Elites changed to
Vets with 3 meltas=75 (good catch instead of 2 I now get three melta shots for the same price)
Vets with 3 plasma and sarge with plasma pistol= 6 points saved and a extra plasma

Heavy
1 Russ upgraded to demolisher and given hull heavy bolter and plasma cannon= points saved from not taking regimental standard

This leaves 12 points to be invested 1 extra plasma in one of the command squads

Now to figure out how to model veterans, light infantry and drop troops.

I'd prefer the lascannon over the heavy bolter (can't move-and-fire with much, but it's a nasty AP2 deathtrap). At least use some magnets, and you can swap out sponsons/hull weapons as you experiment.

You might also play around with a 3 or 4-flamer platoon command squad sometime; you'd be surprised how many marines you can kill, when you don't have to roll to hit, and can hit 4 or 5 of them 4 times each.

Now to figure out how to model veterans, light infantry and drop troops.

Veterans: (my approach) they have more character than your typical guardsmen, as they've been doing this longer. Dirty uniforms, non-standard patches, personalized weapons (barrel length, wrappings, customized stocks, etc.), toothbrush or cards stuck in the helmet band, things like that.

Light Infantry: some camo netting, branches/leaves stuck on here and there, painted up in a camo scheme that matches their base?

Drop Troops: build yourself a movement "tray" for your dropping guys. Litter it with parachute (gravchute) remains. When they land, just put the tray on the table. For your small veteran squads, you only need a "tray" the size of the small blast marker; you may want one or two larger templates as well, in case you ever want to drop a full squad.
