These new digital models and the resultant casts?

I'm really not liking how they're looking - at least in pictures.

Maybe something is being lost in translation here, but so far, they don't look to compare well (at all) with traditional sculpts that are then turned into casts.

The hair in particular isn't looking good at all.

I'd be really surprised if it was the printer as even a cheap $800 resin printer should be able to easily print that Garrick model. I've seen way more detailed stuff come out of those.

It looks like the photography. Reminds me of the Conan kickstarter where most things were done in a similar color and everyone complained about how soft all the detail was until they got the pieces in hand.

I really hope that with their push to 3d modeling and printing things Mierce minis finally become somewhat less time-consuming to assemble. Every single resin model I've got from them I'd had to rework joints as they never fit as casted and I'm pretty tired of spending more time assembling a miniature then I do painting it.

I doubt it...why would a 3D printer help in that regard?

It's not the design, but the moulding that lets them down in that department.

Roberto Chaudon for example puts lovely coded little pins and sockets in his design to assist construction.

But when they get moulded, more often than not these are totally blasted away by the big fat injection pin.
Same with some of the 3D printed stuff already cast…

So even though the 3D printed master may have all these lovely connecting pins and sockets, it’s up to the casting to make sure these remain intact.
Sometimes they do, most often they don’t.

When I compare the casting from Mierce to other companies, especially the Rackham stuff from CMON, I have to wonder why they find it so hard to leave the pins and socket unmolestered.
The Rackham Hydra, Dragon, Flesh Golem, and Belial are all amazingly detailed, wonderful miniatures, that you can put together without glue they are so fantastically designed!

While it's true there's problems caused by how they mold most of what I've assembled from Mierce in the past 2 weeks has had no attempt at all for pins and such to even be ruined by the molds. I'm painting the Fen Beasts now and I would have loved to have at least some discernable surface to tell me that something is suppose to be glued there. Hell they don't even have flat cuts but strange dimpled areas that can't even pass for a connection that you just have to end up greenstuffing and trying to make look decent as no matter how much you clean them you can never tell what the original shape was as they rarely follow any sort of, well, common sense when it comes to how parts should go together. How they do the molds just makes it way worse.

I have to roll my eyes when they talk about how great and secret their process is as I don't believe their cast quality is any better or worse then most other resin I've used (outside of the joints which are the worst I've ever seen) but their stuff looks as good as it does due to the art direction and quality of the sculpts themselves.

For some reason, whenever I look at the Grundtroll I keep seeing this guy who was an old knockoff, for a Masters of the Universe riding beast.

I definitely get a battle cat vibe from it as well, maybe just because of his helmet.

Looks really sharp

wonder if the resin is a different mix from the previous stuff that was being questioned as its more the "normal" look I expect from Mierce (they have use other stuff at times)

That does look awesome, but since it's many times the size of the human casts they showed earlier, it's not really a fair comparison lol

But it is great to see that their monsters will continue to come out well, that's what I'm always interested in, anyway

actually it looks like this on is shown down by his foot, and looks better than the original photo (lack of a white background maybe?)

I noticed that, too, but it's so zoomed out to fit Banbreca you can't see much detail on the smaller model.

This is definitely making me want Banbreca, though

Ok, I know a miniature is cool when I immediately try and come up with a scenario to use it in after first glimpse.

My next DnD campaign may have more undead in it than previously planned!

Are the skulls on the giant's belt smaller than the skulls of the skeletons on his battle platform?

Are the skulls on his belt from some up until now unknown Darklands race of...diminutive demi-humans?

Or are they just decorations?

Oh, good catch!

Alright, let me just make a note on that " Skulls on Giant Skeleton's (with huge magic lantern full of Glowing skulls) belt seem smaller than the skull of the skeletal warriors riding on the make shift tower on his/her back".

I'll file that right between "Snake women created by Atlantean greek spin-off culture should not have breasts", and " Mythological creatures such as Dragons would never walk on their knuckles".

I'm joking of course, but realistically, with their new printer, I bet Bob could increase the size of the skulls on his/her belt a bit more, and just reprint that piece again.

I suppose it could all be a matter of perspective, the angle of the pic, etc. but...it *is* noticeable and it *is* avoidable.

I've always hated when 'trophy skulls' on a miniature don't 'fit in' with the scale of the other miniatures in the line.

But maybe that's just me?

They could be Nithing skulls if you don't like the idea of children (the size would be about right, the one below is on a standard 30mm base),

Darklands has enough different sized humanoids to cover pretty much any sized skull you want to add

There you go!

The Jutes really have it out of Ys, and have collected a fair amount of...Nithing skulls - good enough!

It's actually perfectly reasonable to have skulls of different sizes in Mierce's world, as many things have human-like skulls.
Krull has bigger skulls on his belt, as he goes after bigger prey...and look how many humanoids there are of all sizes.
This is a world were there aint just humans to leave skulls behind!

(Wow, I'm actually defending Mierce here, who'd have thunk?)

Hopefully I haven'y totally blown my 7 years of purchasing good will, as I am waiting for my Branbeca to move into "packing" status.

I did ask for a frankenstein mix of parts: Capture Branbeca with the lantern'o'skulls and one-handed axe of instead of the captive and 2-handed axe.basically, I'm not a fan of the big boots the other versions wear. (Who made them?).
So hopefully it will move into packing soon...!

Mierceday!

Demons of Fire

We have another update for Darklands: Savage Hordes II this week, and what a lovely update it is.

Let's make a start!

Three miniatures to show this week, and all for the Byzantii. How lovely!

Three lovely fire demons to show this week, all for the Byzantii of course, and all from the talented hands of Yannick Hennebo...

The leader of the unit, Herod, is really showing that fire in quite an unorthodox and original way, but his comportment could be better.

Perhaps a 7 out of 10.

Aurus is performing the Estonian Fowl Throw, a complicated maneouvre involving a chicken, some Doritos and a lot of hellfire mixed with parsley sauce.

It's a 6 out of 10 from us; his footwork isn't all it could be.

We've seen Frantius before, of course, but we'll show him again - and we'll give him 8 out of 10 for the double-axle generation and textbook standing show-off, like Joe Root pushing one through the covers effortlessly. He's this week's winner!

Ahem. Anyway, these guys should be with us soon, so we reckon you're looking at Wave 22 for the Ignilegionarii...

Hippos!

Hungry Hippos!

It's been a few months since the last update here, but things are moving behind the scenes, not the least of which are Timmy's bowels - but that's a story for another day.

Anyway, we hope you're sitting down for this one, because it's a blimmin' cracker.

Here we go...

Two lovely Byzantii miniatures to show off thanks to Allan this week. We don't really know what hippos sound like, so we're all singing the theme to Rainbow thanks to cuddly George, the hippo. For those under 40 or not British: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9fhOPHtOtw. Yes, it's safe for work, before you ask.

There's not a finer sight in all Christendom than to see a bunch of fat, angry hippo-men charging at you with great big clubs and rather large mouths... especially if they're sculpted by Allan Carrasco!

The leader of the vulgus (that's unit to you and me) - called a Tertius - is Gonyeka, and he's a happy chappie, as you can see.

Check out the bells that will go on his club end...

We bet you ten quid you won't stick your head in his mouth, and that's swearing!

We've seen Onumo before, of course...

...but he's always worth another view, especially as he's part of the vulgus!

The last warrior of the unit is Ngozig, and judging by that smirk on his face he's just eaten a few babies or something.

Knowing Allan's speed, these guys will be ready for Wave 22!

Norse!

Steinn on foot and on Grundtroll

We have another update for Darklands: Savage Hordes IV this week; and of course, it's bloody awesome, even if we say so.

Ready? We are!

There's a few Norse miniatures to show you this week, although they all revolve around two, really...

Bob's work on Steinn the Bold - both on foot and on Grundtroll - is, we think you'll agree, nothing short of outstanding. But don't take our word for it... have a look yourself!

Here's the shieldwall version:

There is a two axe version now, too:

There is also a great axe version and a spear version, but he's not quite right yet so we'll wait to show him when he's sorted.

He should definitely be a Wave 23 shipment.

The Grundtroll version of Steinn is bloody ace. Just look at it! Look!!

The right arm is a little awkward so we're going to sort that for next time. Again, you'll be able to have him with two axes, great axe and spear on the Grundtroll. That's a 100mm base, by the way.

We think he'll be a Wave 23 shipment, on time!
