Yeah, that’s true, though I’ll be very happy just having my very first army fully painted on a shelf!

Yeah, it’s good to swap about, particularly on a project like these Elves… there’s a Zoat around here somewhere that needs more paint!

Quite a drudge of a painting session tonight, slapping more red on the various detailed bits;

20 archers have their red bits basecoated so I’m about 1/3 through this, the longest step. I’ve spotted a few that will need their white bits touching up before I do highlights on it. I might need to do something else after this step though, probably zoaty and some proper bases for the Escalation explorers.

Thanks for looking!

As of Lurgey, I decided to Google it to confirm that my colloquial use was correct and now realise it has no e. So the lurgy is a non-descript illness, kind of like the flu and cold (and in modern times omicron). My current symptoms put me in mind of COVID but my test and my wife’s test were negative, so Lurgy it is!

Back on the lurgy theme kids often use it to tease or exclude other kids “don’t play with him, he’s got the lurgy”. I get the impression that cooties are used a bit like this too?

Cooties are definitely used by kids to tease each other. But the word doesn't really extend into the realm of physical maladies. We wouldn't say that a nondescript illness was "the cooties." I guess you just have a more versatile colloquialism on that side of the pond.

Elves are looking good.
For my two cents, I think the techmarine with the hammer looks a little derpy because he's leaning ever so slightly away from the hammer. It's almost like his hammer and backpack are about to topple him over backward. If he were leaning slightly forward - by making a waist adjustment or a basing thing - or if he were hefting his hammer in the air - with a slight shoulder rotation - it might look more like he was ready to wield that mighty piece and just paused mid swing to crack off a round or two.

Can't wait to see them in the ol' Gold and Purple.

Yep, there’s a satisfaction from having a painted bunch of minis! A whole army would be even nicer!

I always figured cooties was based on something like cold sores, as it was always something boys and girls would accuse each other of catching when they kissed in movies/tv shows. We do like our colloquialism’s over this side of the pond that’s for sure
I think you’re right on the techmarine, his backpack is especially going to off balance him. I think the tanks are too big, I might look to change that. As for the hammer I’m thinking that he’ll end up on a step with the end of the hammer slightly below his feet. I’m hoping that will address that bit and still keep the old school techmarine look.sadly I’m quite limited on right arms at the moment so without some serious butchery he’s going to stick with this pose for now. As of colours I’m not sure whether he (and the apothecary for that matter) will have gold armour. I quite fancy some deep red but highlighted in a similar way to the gold rather than edge highlights, we’ll see.

Another short painting session, this red takes about 5 mins per mini, so I laid it down on another 10 and calls it a night;

If I get the chance I might try to get this step finished in the week as we’re off to visit my brother on the weekend. Then its school holidays, so I might see if the kids wanna paint any mini guys whilst I’m on daddy day care.

Thanks for looking

They sure hit me in the nostalgias!

I did it, the red detailing is all basecoated!

5 mins per model again and the 40 archers and 12 Spearmen are all at the same state! It was quite a slog, so I’ll switch up to something else next before getting on with the next element. I’ve decided that Zoaty boy is next in line. I’ve been looking at oldhammer army shots and spotted a red Zoat which looked quite cool. Not sure I’m brave enough to give it a go, but I’m not feeling too inspired by the usual green right now.

Thinking of the steps that are left for the Elves, we have; black straps and spearheads basecoating, washes on; reds, skin, blue pouches and spearheads, black straps. Then highlights on skin, whites and spearheads. That’ll be the minis themselves done, but the bases need texture paint, basecoat black, 2 drybrush layers, tidy up of edges… so yeah, quite a bit to go!

Thanks for sticking with the slow plod of the red advancing!

I love a bit of in thread interactions! It’s quite a slog on these details, and it’s not like sloppy works for Elves! The results of a big batch are always great, certainly the grots were more fun though!

Oh yeah, those cardboard cut outs were fantastic. I was lucky enough to get Elthariom, but sadly never got Grom, I hate to think what he’d cost on eBay nowadays.

Tonight was another evening of watching F1 and painting mini guys. It seems I chose a good colour for the Zoat, though maybe he needs a bit more black for the full Chuck Lecluck colours;

So far it’s just Mephiston Red and Zandri Dust and I need to think what other colours to go for. Taking this guy as my inspiration I think I need to slip in some yellow and green, but black and turquoise might work well too. I’m picturing the bone coloured bits to be wraithbone like (maybe he knows youwashock’s zoat’s Eldar mates?) material, so maybe the gem shaped bits should be painted like wraithstones? I’m also unsure on the wash to use with the red; Agrax, Purple or Green. The original GW red Zoat looks to have a bit of a purple tone, so will probably go with that one. Let me know what you guys think might work

This has the potential to turn out awesome. Either purple or green to shade the skin/scales can give you a nice effect. I eagerly await your progress, and he can pal around my neighborhood anytime.

For Dark eldar a sloppy down on their luck cabal look could actually work quite well?`And eldar are also just space elfs, same for Dark elfs come to think of it.

But yeah , high elves are probably not likely to be ragged or down on their luck so accuracy it is

Good job on the red for the zoat btw!

Yeah, it could fit the cabal bill quite nicely but I’ll save the grim dark for my Plague Marines and go bright and cheerful for my elves!

No update at the moment, mainly as I’m still on holiday. I do however have some Amazon vouchers burning a miniatures shaped hole in my pocket. I don’t really need anything, but I’m torn between 2 options at the moment. I fancy a doom croissant, Immortals and praetorians for the Necrons in the shape of the combat patrol, but I am also kinda coming round to the idea of a Nurgle Knight (probably Desecrator). Which way do you reckon I should go?

Glad I gave you a chuckle, not sure where I first heard it, but I certainly can’t claim ownership of it! I did also order the Necrons, but I will also get a Knight Desecrator at some point.

Other than ordering minis, I did throw some pigment at the Elves tonight. Nothing exciting, just the black straps on the archers, then fixing bits I’d missed on about 15 of them

As I was packing up I spotted a couple of other bits that I’d missed so I’ll have to get those before I do the washes. That’s the joy of painting large batches I suppose!

One thing that struck me just now is that it might be fun to put together a stop motion of these guys being painted since they been in two piles since I started. I’ll have to scour the gallery now for images…

Thanks for looking!

Good progress on the elves Gobert, they are coming along nicely. I'm really impressed you're sticking at it - I don't have the ability to churm through that many at once. I've only got 10 might goblins on the go and it's getting a bit much...

Yeah, I’m questioning my sanity that’s for sure! I’m looking at the Zoat and I’m not convinced right now, I’ll see it through though.
Olthannon wrote:Yeah great progress mate. I was "batch painting" my elves 5 at a time and even that took me weeks did you decide on bases colour?

5 would be a much more manageable number! I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel I feel. The bases will be a black/grey volcanic wasteland to match the rest of them.

I had a look and some of the pics are from different angles, I’ll see how it looks, but it might be a bit wierd on the stop motion! As for rules, they’ll be playing the sitting on the shelf really still game .
Ragsta wrote:The long grind of batch painting will be worth it! Check and check again, I’m always missing stuff too

Its quite a grind, but the progression is there… though I found a few more bits that I missed today!
youwashock wrote:A paint progression video sounds cool, gobert. A good wash and you'll really feel like the end is in sight.

I’ll give the video a go, maybe next time I should do a pic for every mini at every stage… might get a bit tiresome I suppose!

Well, another weekend, another F1 race, this time with Quali on Friday, sprint tomorrow and race on Sunday. This should mean 3 painting sessions and good progress on the Elves. Tonight I managed to wash all of their skin and just shy of half of the red bits.

Not the easiest to spot the difference, but it’s there! As I mentioned above, there were a few bits of white and red that I’d missed so they also got tidied up.

I’ll finish the wash on the red tomorrow, then the blue will come out and I think I’ll put some Nuln on their hair. The skin will be highlighted back to Elf Flesh and some of the red trim will get brightened up. The blue pouches will get a single highlight too, then it’ll be tidy up of the silver and white before finishing off with highlights for the whites. Oh and the spear tips will need some Leadbelcher at some point. I’ve got some black textured paint for the bases, then a couple of dry brushes of grey before painting the edges. By my reckoning that’s at least 8 sessions, probably more like 10. At 2 a week, it’ll be June before they’re done it might end up sooner if they come away on my work trip in a couple of weeks, we’ll see!

Thanks for looking, and heading with my long slow progress and rambling posts

Good to see the mighty elves progressing! Seeing how I'm demotivated by painting batches of 4 you should be proud that you stick to it all the time.

Interested in seeing the Zoat develop, it's a lovely mini and every time someone paints it, there are new colors coming forth.

It’s quite a slog, but a good task to do while watching something as it doesn’t require too much concentration. I’ll get back to the Zoat at some point, there’ll only be 2 BSF minis to paint after she’s done.

Last night wasn’t quite a productive with the Elves as I’d hoped, mainly as I had to do some work (boo!). Still I managed to get all of the washes on the red bits;

So that’s 2 more washes and the wash stage is done. I might get the washes done tonight depending on whether the F1 Race is as good as the Sprint was.

Thanks for sticking with this process!

So the main race wasn’t as interesting as the Sprint so all of the Elves got their hair washed in Nuln Oil and the blue bits got a Blue Wash too;

With that the wash stage is done. I’ll be back to regular paints next time, probably starting with the flesh.

It must be one of those Age of Sigmar things, it even has a base without right angles!

It was also joined by a couple of Immortals tonight;

These guys are pretty fiddly to put together! All of the pipes and none push fit bits meant they too much longer than I was expecting… that and all the bits I took out of them so they looked a bit more undead like the Indomitus Necrons do. I did enjoy that process, the missing eye socket being my favourite bit. The Doom Croissant also had a few pieces taken out of it too.

Thanks for looking
