I'm just trying to get a feel for where everyone is at in terms of building their army, having their army, and worried about having to change their army.

I've played as Kroot Mercenaries since the army list came out in White Dwarf, it was shortly after the release of the Tau as a main army a few years back.  I only ever hold one army at a time, using the profits of selling my old army to fund my new one.  My army is currently 1500 points, and for the past few years I have been able to enter them in a few tournaments.  The problem lies in that I have nearly 400 points in Forgeworld Kroot units, because the models are so badass.  The 'Default' tournament sheet for GW has now changed from 'Imperial Armor units are OK' to 'Imperial Armor units are disallowed' Now I hear that Jervis stated only codex armies will be reprinted for future editions.  My Kroot army is still in 3rd edition rules, and now I fear it may be lost like the Squats were.

This is what I am going to do.  I am going to build my Kroot army up to 1850 points, the standard tournament point size, and wait.  I am going to just sit on my army and wait, and see how many tournaments I can actually enter.  Until then, I'm playing Warmachine.  I would like to consider myself a GW veteran, since I first began playing in 2nd edition, but I do feel forsaken.

Please respond with your current state of 40K affairs and how you feel the game is evolving, thanks.

I've been playing 40k and Fantasy since 1994 and over the years have sold off all of my Fantasy stuff to focus on 40K where I've accumulated 5 Armies of various size.  I still have a decent amount of unpainted stuff, and as such have severely reduced my GW purchases of late.  I feel like I've reached a saturation point and see no point in acquiring new models.  The whole game system seems to be in a state of flux right now.  I don't feel comfortable buying models if I don't know what rules and codexii are coming down the pipe.  I've got plenty of stuff to work with and am in a position where real life considerations (moving/work/school) are preventing me from being as interested as I once was.  I love the 40K atmosphere and the game is good fun, but right now, I'm happy to get in the occaisional game and feel established enough to not want to invest myself any more in gaming.  I've put a lot of money and time into 40K over the years.  Now I feel like I am in a position to reap those benefits at my leisure without investing much more.

I'm finding myself returning to Necromunda and Inquisitor as months go by and I have to worry about codex creep for first my IG, then Eldar, now CSM and perhaps Orks.

It's getting ridiculous having to worry about whether the current models I've bought, modeled, painted, and spent lots of fun and work on will now become obsolete.

But, then, like Gav said over at Warseer, I now have GW's "permission" to enjoy my old models because they're "collectible".

Still got my original Eldar army from when I started in 1999. 2000+ points painted, and several boxes of new stuff (multipart guardians to deplace all my old single-pose Defenders, etc) I eventually intend to use to update it and actually make it a WELL painted army. The stuff I have done is quite playable using the new codex, but I could stand to paint up a few new things. The bigger priority is getting the basic stuff looking sexier though, as my old stuff (the first army I painted) just won't cut it for appearance scoring at any real tournament.

Picked up around 100 old metal Harlies a few months ago (thanks Carmachu!), and have had fun using a bunch of them in a few games, but am still wrestling with a good painting method so I can build my dream all-harlie army using Wych Cult rules.

Still got my original Wood Elf Army from 1999. 3000pts painted if I go character/monster heavy, or 2000-2250 with a good model count. This is a bit better looking than my Eldar, and I've had a LOT of fun at the two GTs I've played with it this year and last. I really only need to fix up/replace a few units to get it up to a solid painting level, but Wood Elves are super common on the tournament circuit nowadays and a lot of players aren't overjoyed to face them, so it's not the best army to try for an Overall with. Instead I'm thinking of working on...

...My old Chaos Warrior army. 2500+pts painted, but a lot of that is old plastic Warriors, which are not that attractive and not that effective. This needs more repainting and new unit work. I have pretty much all the new models (in boxes) that I need to make it sexy and competitive for GT play. I just need to find the time and motivation to rework about half of the army. Right now for the list I want to test I need to build and paint a unit of mounted marauders, a unit of chaos knights, a beast herd, a beast chariot, a unit of centigors and a character on boobsnake. It's just a pile of stuff.

Still have my old Slaanesh CSM army, a bit over 2000pts but only the vehicles and a squad or two painted. Needs lots of work. I also have picked up some bikes and "new" (current) metal daemonettes and mounted daemonettes to bring the appearance level of the army up from my old Realms of Chaos-era daemonettes. It's a ton of work though, and I'm not really inclined to work on another Marine army right now.

My Dark/Fallen Angels are up over 2k painted now. This is my nicest-looking army, and the one I used most at Adepticon this year (busted out the Wood Elves on Friday). I just recently painted a new Librarian/Sorcerer, got my Furies from my Chaos Warrior army touched up and looking good for use with the Fallen; their bases now match this army, and I'll no doubt redo the bases in my Chaos fantasy army to match. Also recently painted up a unit of Bloodletters which look pretty good. And I painted a pretty nice corrupted-Deathwing-looking Obliterator. So it's now fully-functional as either a DA or a CSM army. I've taken it out to Adepticon and a local tournament now in its Chaos incarnation and have enjoyed it quite a bit, but I am reluctant to give up on the actual new DA rules. I bought some bikes and some Termies but haven't assembled them yet, and I'm painting some more Tac marines to fill out my Combat squads. I've already done the painting to bring my Assault Marines up to the full ten men. I really should buy, build and paint a couple of those super-cheap Pred Destructors. Sexy.

I still love 40k and (especially) WHFB. There's a TON of stuff I want to paint and play with; enough that it's a bit intimidating, but I am working on it here and there. The tournaments are still really what motivates me to get stuff painted. Last year the day before The Colonial 06 (my first WH GT), I painted 10 Dryads, 3 Warhawk Riders, and 5 Glade Riders in the 36 hrs before the tournament. Can't beat that motivation!

I have a large amount of Tau which I'm in the middle of converting and painting. I have no need for any more models unless GW release another Tau book which surely won't happen for several years.

I also have a large amount of early SM stuff -- beakies and termies -- collected during 1st/2nd edition, but no vehicles or characters. I could easily build a modern SM army just by buying a few of those, but I have no motivation to do so.

Recently I have been going off 40K as I have been rediscovering others periods and rules such as 6mm Napoleonics, SF navy and DBA Ancients. All of which are cheaper, quicker and easier to do if you can find opponents, which I am managing to do thanks to the internet. I'm not interested in WFB, WAB or any other GW games.

I am not a tournament player though I like to keep aware of what's happening in the big tournaments.

As for where the game is going, I doubt there will be a 5th edition for at least a couple of years. When it comes, it will be more of a reorganisation and tidy up than a radical change. I can't see GW revolutionizing the rules by introducing or re-introducing mechanisms like Overwatch. However, I can see the rules being split down into basic and advanced, with options sets (e.g. Cities of Death) as separate books and they could put Overwatch, etc into a separate book and keep it non-tournament or for veteran player tournaments or something.

I think the least popular armies will get quietly dropped, such as SoB, DE and Necrons, so that GW can concentrate on the ones that sell the most. It will happen simply by GW not releasing new models and codexes for them. I think it is a shame as they add flavour and tactical options, but Necrons for example seem to account for less then 3% of the player base.

I'm sure IG will survive.

I hope Orks will come back. The huge delay in releasing a new set either indicates they are being quietly sidelined and dropped, or more hopefully a major effort is being put in to completely update them.

Chaos will be revised quite radically and there will continue to be more SM codexes than is really healthy.

One trend that is apparent is the streamlining and rationalisation (balancing?) of more recent codexes and the dropping of non-standard armies (like your Kroot Mercs) from normal and tournament play. Not that you can't still use them but I expect official tournaments to continue that way. If I were you I would hang onto the Kroot because they will be a lot less sellable anyway as a completely non-core army.

Thanks to Gav Thorpe's recent words I hope for more, better and quicker FAQs though I will believe it when I see it and I would prefer better written rules in the first place. (See my comments about 5th edtion.)

I should add that I'm sticking with my Tau because I like them and I have no worries about Tau being sidelined out of the game as they are too popular.

I put together a pretty snazzy Elysian drop troop list from the same C/A article.

All I have to say is that you got faaaaaaar more tourney play than I did out of that same article.
Once my army was built, I then had to switch to the (then) new IG codex. I was pretty damned pissed to put it lightly. 9 sentinels and oodles of converted shotguns later, I vowed to never again build a tourney list out of any C/A articles. I should have known better really.

I still get play out of with open minded friends that appreciate nicely done rarely seen armies, but the lack of using it whenever and whereever I want to still rankles me to this day.

While these same lists are or are being made illegal for tourney use (thus most people turn their nose at) I still am glad that GW made such good things as the VDR, Monster articles, enslavers, etc. While not the best balanced things, they made up for it ten times in the fun factor. Its a shame that GW doesnt want to revisit such mindsets for their games. It really made for a truly unique experience on the table as opposed to "Wow! I have never seen a 'Combined arms' *roll eyes* dark angels force before. Nor have I seen a nidzilla army....how refreshingly fresh...".

That said, I am focusing on 40K more than I ever have before. Thats saying something for me, because of how jaded I am perceived to being on the Intranet.

I stick with the fun stuff, like the build a monster articles. I havent had so much fun since rogue trader because of the unique factor of such things. KillTeam, Combat patrol, etc....very veryy underrated things.
I dont take the gospel of the "New Jervis Plan" at any value other than it is made to make the tourney crowd feel warm and fuzzy with a false sense of security.

A spade is a spade. A bad set of rules or company plan is just that. So I still use the old stuff. The third ed books work great still for the most part with this edition with few minor tweaks needed to make them make sense. No need to buy a new dark angels book for me. The old third ed booklet combined with the SM codex and DA FAQ is a good un.

You would be suprised how many other people feel the same way I do as well. The rules still work. To progress into a new codex is a matter of choice, not compulsory requirement.

I still ahve tons of fun. Thats why I like 40K.

I'm just trying to get a feel for where everyone is at in terms of building their army, having their army, and worried about having to change their army.

1.my armys are all done and have been so for many years

2.i originally had 4 armys-pure deathwing, pure ravenwing, a battle company dark angels force and a tau force

3.not worried anymore the new dark angels dex raped both my deathwing and ravenwing armies to the point they were unplayable. i ended up combining parts of my deathwing/ravenwind/battle company to make a workable list with the new dex, in the process i ended up seling off most of my deathwing and a majority of my battle company force. i am keeping all my extra ravenwing stuff for when apocolypse comes out so i can put them all back on the table.

4.i also have lots of FW models and luckily our local RTT based games all allow FW as long as you have the rulebook (not to mention general pickup games), GTs are kinda iffy though.

I've stopped playing. *shrug* Its not been fun anymore. I'm kinda bored.

I'm started back up on working on my hordes army, and getting back into RPG's which is less work...(and your welcome Mann!)

*shrug* I've also started getting rid of and selling extra stuff thats just collecting dust and use it to buy what I want of other hordes, warmachine or RPG items....which is working well.

My sister army is done. I have some ideas, just no motivation. Same with my WE army, although thats more WIP. I just dont care anymore.

Hope more old fools come to their senses and start giving you their money instead of those Union Jack Blood suckers...

Pirate Ship Revenge

I've a largish (3000? or so points) Blood Angels army, a smaller (but not much) Dark Angles army, the beginnings of a Tau army (for sale if anyone wants it), 1000 points of traitor marines, close to 1000 points in Vampire Counts, 1 large Necromunda Gang, Several Blood Bowl teams, a bunch of Eldar warlocks (no I'm not sure why I still have them), close to 50 old Harlequins, and a mountain of bits that blots out the sun.

Now I play Warmachine.

I have nothing useful to add.

I have a 2000 point Blood Angels army...painted it last fall, won 4 or so Best Sportsmans and an Overall with it.

I have a 2000 point Space Wolf Terminator heavy drop pod army, painted. I have fun running it, but it loses alot.

I have a 2000 point DIY Marine army that won alot of games but did nothing in tournaments.

I have assembled a 2000 point Templar army, and a 1750 Lysander wing. I also have a crap ton of Eldar stuff in flux( primed, assembed, and still boxed), and 2000 points IG primed. My old Templar army got me a Best Army and 2 Best Sportsmans.

I have a ton of Blood Bowl, BFG and Warmaster stuff.

I had a 2000 point Wood Elf tournament , won 1 Best Army and 2 Best Sportsmans with it, but it got uberdamaged when I moved, and the new stuff came out, so I retired it.

I almost did an Elysian army, and a C/A Ghosts army, but I held off and then the new IG book came out.

I don't see any of the current armies going away....I disagree with Necrons being a low sales army....They are a top tourney army here and alot of people play them. Might be a regional thing.

I am worried about my Space Wolves...I'm pretty sure they are gonna be illegal. I did a ton of conversions, since you could buy Wolf Guard whatever gear in the armory you wanted. I'd hold off doing anything Marine for a bit.

Chaos armies are going to be alot different from what I understand.

I have fun with the game, and I don't like the storyline and imagery of Warmachine. Flames of War looks very cool. Otherwise with 40K and the RPG's I play, I am happy with the gaming I am getting.

I have around 3000 points of Chaos painted to a standard I'm now (mostly) embarrassed about.

I have a solid 1500 point Space Wolf list that I'm going to expand to 1750, put on some touchups, and call it "done" until new SW rules come out.

I have ~2500 points of lizardmen mostly unassembled.

I finally have a regular gaming group, but in the past two months have been traveling so much I've managed to play twice. I'm more excited about playing now than ever (due to more opponents than in the past).

Current plan is to get the SW list to a solid 1750, then decide whether to build Eldar or start Chaos over again with the new codex. I'm really looking forward to the new codex, as my complaint about Chaos in the past was it being overpowered -- and I've always loved the model line, and new plastic Chaos terminators with rules that might make them worth using is something I'd be very much interested in.

Once the new Chaos plastics are in, I'm thinking of trying to put together a nice Word Bearers list heavily converted with BT and DA bits for lots of robes and other crusader-type bits. Not that WB will exist as a separate entity within the rules, but I like their theme and look.

I've got about 3k points of marines done up as Relictors, although I'm just using DIY traits for them now. If the trait system ever goes away, I'll probably repaint them as Blood Angels.  I've got another 2.5-3k worth of guard which I'm working on getting painted now. And then I've got maybe 800 points worth of various inquisitorial stuff.

I enjoy the game, enjoy the "hobby", etc, but I continue to be frustrated with GW's inability to write clean, eficient, well organized rules. It's not hard, guys. I understand the mind set behind "work it out in a friendly manner with your opponent", but if the rules are better written you get to spend more time playing and less time essentially inventing house rules to cover GW's shoddy writing.

I've recently put all my GW stuff away (at least that which I didn't give to a friend's kid). I have BOC, Sisters, Valhallans, Marines, Orks KOS and Eldar secured in their own cases, and more Eldar, Tau and marines unfinished elsewhere, including my now-defunct Deathwing. Most of the stuff I've given away is Tau I was never going to get to and Eldar from when I started in 2nd ed. (this is, by the way, the third Eldar army I've given away from leftovers; I'm really trying to get down to ~2000 points).

I have never played a tournament, and played in two leagues. At one time it sounded like a good idea, especially at the end of 3rd/beginning of 4th, but now it holds no interest for me. Large-point armies have no interest for me: I'd rather do combat/boarder patrol, kill team, Necromunda or Mordheim.

Currently, no one in my gaming group is either available or interested in GW games, and I feel similarly to Carmachu. It'd be fun to do a small game (say, 1000 points) with something I've already got, but I don't want to do a new army, and I can't be bothered to re-optimize for this edition/revision. So I'm having a ton of fun with Warmachine, Hordes and Warlord. It's just nice playing 20-ish figs per side, not having rules arguments, etc. I'm looking into Chaos in Carpathia, Wild West, possibly ACW historical skirmish, ATZ, 5150, as ways of using what I've got. But for now, the GW figs are taking a back seat to Privateer Press and Reaper.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I put together a pretty snazzy Elysian drop troop list from the same C/A article
Me too, I built up an all Carapace / Storm trooper army using Space Marine Scouts with 2nd Edition Storm trooper heads. I managed to adapt the army pretty well, my carapace armoured support squads (the ones with 3 special weapons and shotguns) became Hardened Veterans and the Storm troopers became Grenadiers. It doesn’t Deep Strike any more nor does it fit with the new IA Elysian list.

As for 40k in general, I’m waiting to see what happens. If the current crop of codices indicates how 4th edition will progress then I worry slightly for my Imperial Guard as I suspect the nerf bat will hit Doctrines hard. I won’t mind a decrease in efficiency in infantry platoons if it’s supported by a boost to Ogryns, Storm troopers, Sentinels, Advisors and Techpriests. I have 12,000 points of Imperial guard including 2,000 points of Squats adapted to fourth edition using my own Doctrines.

I have 2,000 plus points of Dark Eldar along with about 1,000 points of Harlequins that are (were) allied to them, their future seem somewhat less clear. Next year it will be a whole decade since their release, with barely a handful of white dwarf articles in-between. Both Dark elder and Orks have been woefully underrepresented in 4th edition.

I get plenty of games in with my Warmachine and Hordes. I have over 2,000 points of painted Cryx and 500 points each of Four Star Mercs and Circle of Orboros. The new Hordes book will keep me happy until next spring and I don’t see my interest dropping off after that. I also have a 1,500 point German Panzer FoW army. I just sold the last of my Warhammer fantasy models on EBay. Some proper support for Battlefleet Gothic or Epic: Armageddon could really encourage me to get into one of or maybe both of those games.

Still I believe that 40k has a light at the end of the tunnel, 5th edition! 5th edition will be a radical change bringing back many of the things I liked about previous editions (movement rates, vehicle cards, vehicles and infantry sharing the same damage stats etc... )  While possibly taking the best ideas from many other games on the market (indirect fire resolved like Mechwarrior, shooting phase like Confrontation, Morale like Epic: Armageddon etc… ) or it will be a minor tweak to the existing system and I’ll flog the majority of my 40k stuff on EBay.

Fingers Crossed.

I started back in winter of 1997 by being intro'ed to Necromunda.  I bought my Cawdors (that I still have) and then got into Gorkamorka.  From there I started getting WD and then I got into 40K with the release of 3rd ed.

From there I started collecting SM and Dark Eldar.  I also bought the codexes as they were released and a box or two with a blister here and there.  My only problem was I lived 125 miles from the nearest player.  Made "regular" game kinda hard to do.  Moved down to the Columbus, OH area and go into playing more and more.

I currently my main armies are my Dark Eldar and Lost and the Damned.  I have around 3000 pts of DE and around 2000 to 2500 LatD.  I have sold / traded my other armies that consisted of SM, Tau, Orks and some other Misc. stuff.  I do still have my Necromunda squads (Cawdor, Redemptionist and Scavies) Mordheim warbands (Cultists, Scaven and a few others) and I hope that for some reason, some of the local players get into one of them.  *crosses fingers*

SInce last summer, I had not played a game until about 3 months ago.  A friend started up a campaign at the LGS and asked if I would play to support him there.  I played one game and that was it.

In past posts, I have b*tched and complained about GW and their constaint drop and discontinued support of their armies.  But, with having a DE and LatD armies, I can't help but feel "left behind".  Time and effort to convert 85% of my LatD army, blah, blah, blah.

Current status with GW:  Disapointed and feeling robbed.  No "ifs", "ands" or "buts" about it.

Now, don't get me wrong, I really love 40K.  I hope GW can get their crap together so I can get back into it.  But, right now, I have taken my time and money to another company.  With that said, I keep coming back to Dakka to see if what everyone is up to, see what is new and hoping to see that GW has "seen the light."

So far, the "light" has not been seen.

I have just enough models to field a godzilla army, an Imperial Guard army still tucked away in the packaging, and a small metal box with the remnents of my orks. I haven't painted in a long time, but I've just started playing again.

I'm not sure what do do right now. Part of me wants to jump into hordes/warmachine, while another (stupider) part is urging me to build Tau (as dark-age humans), Blood angels, or both. Maybe I should start fantasy instead. Or maybe I should listen to common sense, sell off my godzilla nids, finish my guard and quit buying stuff.

I've been playing since Rouge Trader.  I tend to not get rid of anything, which means lots of shelves of things that don't see much playtime anymore.

4000 pts of Eldar, including 11 wraithlords dating back through time, some with the old spirit warrior head and only one arm from when that was normal. Squads of the little ghost warriors, eldar pirates, guardians with shoulder mounted missle launchers.

2000 pts of foot slogging orks, most of which are so weedy that I'd think they were grots nowadays. Various orky wargear with no rules anymore from the Freebooters and Waagh!  The Orks. Largish amounts of the old dreadnaughts. 120 old plastic grotz. Orky version Dpod, Stomper, several classic battle wagons.

5000 pts of Kustom Konverted Speed Freaks. 20 Bikers, each with about 25 bucks in bitz on them, and all using the gorkamorka driver. A couple dozen buggies, Many truck mobz and skarboyz mobs.

2000 pts of various Chaos that don't get played ever. 2000 pts of Khorne berzerkers and bikers with demonic support that do.

8000 pts of Inquistion, mostly Grey Knights and Inquisitiorial retinues. I ike converting new retinues, it's a medical condition I think.

6 Ambulls, some space zoats, squats, chaos squats, lots of old renegades. a hundred RT era marines and old dreads, gathering dust.

1000 pts of sisters.

2000 pts of Black Templars

2000 pts of Ultramarines

2000pts of Tyranids

3000 pts of Tau

3 squads of Deathwing and a squad of Ravenwing, more Dark angels in progress to fill these out.

The armies that get the most playtime are my Grey knights. Last year I got in about 20 games with the Speed Freaks, and they will come back out with the new Orky Codex. No matter what my thoughts are on the 40k rules, soon as I start rolling dice I'm having fun.

I will never have an understanding of people with only one army...

I have played every game GW has released since 1988 and owned and played with every single 40k and fantasy main army (WD variants excepted) except tomb kings.

I have barely played 40k in the last 2 years.

I will never, ever again buy a 'varient' or 'summer campain' list like the WHFB slayer cult or daemon legion or the 40k LATD because I now want to be able to get 4-5 years from each army I do rather than 18 months. I play primarily at tourneys and what is official and what will stay official is of great importance to me.

Got 2500 points of Orks which I use as footsloggers or KOS depending on my mood. About 1200 points of Deathgaurd that I rarely play with.
And 1500 points of Blood Angels from 2nd Ed that I haven't played in yonks. I was playing a game a week for a while, but my opponent has been distracted by supreme commander so now I'm messing around with D'n'D minis and roleplaying instead. I'm very dissillusioned with 40K. Very. When I'm playing with my Orks, I sorta have fun, but I find them very frustrating at times too. Death Gaurd were interesting for a while, but I dunno, I just gave up on them. Wierd, because I'm very proud of my conversions and paint jobs, much moreso than with my orks.
Combat Patrol is the best fun I have these days with 40K, because it's some of the only times I feel like I'm on a level playing field.

Yoor Speeshawl too Gawd!

I have been playing since 1989 and I have not touched a 40K model in 3 years. I have a huge Word Bearers Army, a Daemon Hunters/IG army and I sold off my Tyranids. I only play Fantasy and a few non GW games now since 40K's rules have become unbearable to me.

Only now do I realize how much I prefer Pete Haines' "misprints" to Gav Thorpe's "brainfarts." :Abadabadoobaddon

The current state of the game is that the company is starting to figure out that they are losing thier bottom line. I as well have numerous games and armies, and I can tell you that our local game shops, as well as the ones down in NC are losing wall space for GW, and replacing it with others.

The owners have been feeling betrayed for years, and one confided that we are now feeling his pain. I as a serious gamer am now in the wait and see mode, because for the simple fact that I could just as easily play Necromunda, Space Hulk, Tyranid Attack, etc. and be all the more happier.

Tournament play is not my thing, after a stint in New York many years ago, and the venomous response that my group got from some of the locals after we cleaned house on them, and I am not a fan of trying to get out of, or selling off my stuff after My LGS raped me on my last deal.

I was once very pro GW, but as we see them crush the rules made by those before them, Im not a fan of thier practices. I feel that they are a day late, and a doller short as far as the rules, and short of a supposed 5th edition, they will not recover with a wave of Jervis's magic wand. He had his day in the sun, and the game is nothing like he began it with those many years ago.

I remember Gav Thorp as a smart ass pimple faced brush cleaner, and he hasn't learned anything from his betters, and has become a good company chimp. I don't take stock from anything this duche says, and if he were to tell me that the sky was blue, I would not believe him, for his street cred is lacking with what he has done to the game with his favoritism.

I find myself playing more and more Necromunda, and am all the more happy to play it with other models besides the gangs, and can as easily play with IG. Orks, Necrons, etc.

The game needs to take a step back, someone needs to do some stratigic analysis of what was successful of all of the games and put the things that work back into the game and stop trying to " Improve " it with mindless banter and personal favoritism of thier particular army. If the Designers could stop tak9ing such long lunch hours for thier games of 40K/ fantasy, and go back to doing the work of making a good game better, instead of the codex creep, we would all be singing a different tune.

Next year, or year in a half, the game should take some sort of turn, and we will see what happens to GW. Thier pocketbooks and bottom line are hurting more then they will let on to the general public, and they are going to be faced with reality within the next six to eight months.

If they were smart, they would have been watching what happened to Detriot MI and the " Big Three" auto makers to see thier future. I expect to see Specialist games, and forgeworld to be taking the lead as to bringing in more money and buisness to make up for the loss, and I see a fifth edition within the next year, year in a half.

Go ahead and scoff, but how can you have Skull Pass's following of Dwarfs for the rest of the year, as well as 40k chaos regurgitated even before the paint is dry on the last six months of Space Marines. Marines have played themselves out, and dwarf's have already had thier day in the sun since Christmas of last year.

The biggest issue that is facing GW is lack of vision. They have too top heavy expenses, and lack of content in thier product. If they don't change, they will continue to " downsize" out of the buisness, and go the way of TSR, and believe it or not I could see john blanch and a group of die hards fighting over IP rights for a few years as some of the older developers debate, hem, and haw about the good old days, and what we could of, should of, and would of done better.

I am in a wait and see attitude, and aside from Doc Thunders little projects, and a few paints, I don't have to buy anything else, unless I want to. I picked up a flames of war book, but if I get into that one, Im paying someone to paint an army if i decide to get into it, or i'll buy/ trade from someone in the event that I get into it.

Flames has a great following in my new town that im getting ready to move to, so in the next three or four months, we may have a different outlook. I have a few small armies of war machine, and hordes, but I see the same issue that GW is having happen to them as well.

I find myself in a wait and see mode, as I stop worrying or caring what GW will do, and play games for the fun of it with a lot more weathering then I used to as a gamer, and as I grow older, I find that I'm in a different zone then i used to be as far as gaming. Its not bad, play what you want with your rules that you have the most fun with. Gav boy gave us all an out with his mewlings, and we can do what we want, and they don't have a bearing on our gaming as long as we all have a good time with what we're playing.

Squats anyone?

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

I have four main armies - Ultramarines, Tyranids, Guard and Chaos. I have been playing these armies for over a decade. I also have 8 different Necromunda gangs, a few copies of Space Hulk, I lead an Orc Blood Bowl team and I am edging my way towards an Imperial Fleet for BFG. Had I the time and money to find and buy it all, I'd also have every Warhammer Quest product ever made.

So what's my situation with 40K? Both terrible and excellent. We don't play 40K, as it stands, any more. Just after 4th Ed came out we collectivley came to a decision that we hated 40K as it stood - the 4th Ed rules were a step backwards from 3rd Ed, and everything GW did reinforced our lack of confidence in them. At this point we started what we call the Revisited Project, wher we have now been writing and re-writing the rules of 40K to suit ourselves. We even have people who played 40K stop playing it and join us because they like our rules more.

Every now and again when we wonder if it was all worth it, we are reminded by little things (like the Dark Angel Codex) why we changed to our own system.

I have 20,000 points of Chaos that are about to get hit by the nerf-stick. My Berzerkers are about to become Chaos Aspect Warriors. My beloved Word Bearers are about to become nothing more than a different paintjob. My Daemonette hordes are about to become generic. And worst of all, my heavily converted and individualised Lost & The Damned army is about to be made obselete by GW. My 90 carefully built and completely unique mutants are about to be 'Squated' by Mr. Johnson and his Axe of Blandness.

I have over 20,000 points worth of Guard (including an Infantry Company, MechInf Company, an Artillery Company and 3 Armoured Companies) that are dreading the next Guard Codex as we'll no doubt see the Doctrines removed completely, removing all of the fun.

So my situation with GW's 40K is terrible.

My situation our 40K is fantastic.

We finished our own Mini-Con this weekend, where a whole lot of us came together and played our rules. We had a great time. We had Iron Warriors taking on Grey Knights and a stalemate being produced in a shooting match. We had Eldar armies walking up the field, protected by their psykers and backed up by legions of War Walkers, fighting off squads of Veteran Marines, Command Squads and foot-based Dev squads. We had a Thousand Son army nearly tear an Eldar army apart from shooting.

And every unit was useful. Everything from Vibro Cannons to Screamers to Tech-Priest Enginseers had their place. Everything worked. Plus we're using things GW doesn't have rules for anymore, like the Fiends of Slaanesh a friend of mine loves to use because we gave them good rules that makes them a viable choice.

My friends who play Eldar have a reason to take Banshees in Wave Serpents. They have a reason not to take Falcons. Our Holo-Fields don't even work like GW's - they just make you harder to hit rather than impossible to kill.

We have a ball. And we don't play any GW rules.

We love 40K. Our 40K. We hate GW and everything they do. And them changing horse halfway through the race with Jervis and his need to make everything even more simplified and option-less as possible has us very greatful. Greatful we stopped playing that horrid game years ago...

I've got three 40k armies:

Tyranids - My first army. ~3000pts, 99.99% painted but could use a repaint. I might have these updated to 4th edition from 3rd edition by the time 5th edition comes out. Haven't played these guys in several years

SOB - ~2500pts, 50% painted. Haven't played these in years either.

Dark Angels - My current active army. ~5000pts, 80% painted. I'm playing these in our local league (NATO) map-based campaign.

Status -
Gaming:
I have a campaign game once every 2-3 weeks. These are great because of the special circumstances built into the campaign. HQ bases, reserve points, FOC limitations, etc...

When I don't have a campaign game, I play Hordes. I find it more entertaining lately and I can usually get in 2-3 games a night as opposed to one 40k game. I still like 40k, I just like WM/Hordes better.

Purchasing:
I've been refusing to buy 40k stuff (I bought the DA codex, but nothing else in the past year +). Yes I'd like the new DA Jetbike, but I'm not going to pay $35 for it. Also, I've been scratchbuilding/kitbashing any new stuff I need.
i.e. When I saw the point cost of the new DA Predator I decided to make myself a second one out of an old Razorback, some plasticard/tube and assorted bitz. Likewise I had scratchbuilt Drop Pods before they got jacked up in points.

I have however been buying Hordes stuff fairly constantly. No Quarter is a great mag and I have no qualms about paying for it (unlike WD which I haven't bought in years), and I've been picking up each of the Circle Orboros models as they're released.

I started the hobby, first and foremost, as a painter. I have always collected the odd 40K miniature simply in order to paint it. Over the years, I have painted and sold several battle forces, including Space Wolves, Tau, Orks, Emperor's Children, and a couple of Eldar.

I have played WHFB since it first came out. I had sat in on a couple of 40K games, but never got very interested- though I loved Adeptus Titanicus and Epic.

Back around '97/'98, a group of close friends all decided to start playing 40K, so I joined in. I looked through my collection and put together two Eldar armies (Ulthwe & Biel-Tan), an Ultramarines army, and a Tyranid army. We played for a couple of years, but I never really liked the game, I just liked spending time with my friends who didn't want to play fantasy. Eventually, they moved on to other things, primarily MMORPGs, and my 40K armies went back into the closet. I have sold off all my painted Eldar. I bought Battle for McCragge when it came out, to see if I would like the new rules. Well, I got some terrain out of it.

My situation with 40K is, meh. I never much liked it, and nothing they have done has changed my opinion. The rules for 40K leave me cold, and I have no desire to play the game at all. I find Starship Troopers and AT-43 are much more enjoyable games.

I plan to finish painting the Space Marines in the closet, to fill out the Ultramarines army, and then sell it. I plan to finish painting the new 'fex and a few other gribblies, and sell my Tyranids. I plan to finish painting the Tau boxed set, and sell it. I will work my way through the backlog of 40K figures in my closet, and sell them. Then I will only buy the odd figure here or there, strictly for the pleasure of painting it. Of course, the 40K stuff has to get in line behind my fantasy stuff... .

Let's see...

I have an Eldar force that I've been collecting, on and off, since the first Aspect Warrior packs were released (one of each aspect) to coincide with their list in WD 127... about 3500-4000 pts. in total.  And only 1 falcon and 1 wave serpent to be seen...

Tyranids.  I have about 2000 pts. of Tyranids that I don't really play a whole lot (they make excellent monster models for RPG's!), but I still want to paint them all eventually...

Chaos!  Like I said in a different thread, I have over 18,000 pts. of Chaos, in various legions:  Death Guard, World Eaters, Iron Warriors (only 1 Oblit squad, too!), Emporer's Children, Dark Lords (my generic/Black Legion marines), and the Unclean (lost and damned)...

I, too, am currently anticipating/dreading the imminent Chaos Codex release... sounds like if half the rumors are true, I'll be losing a lot of models to the "collectible" status... or I'll play them as "counts as" at home (which is where we usually play; waaaay to far away from any stores to play).

The new plastics, though, are making me consider my Jackals addition to my LatD force, and thinking I might expand them to a regular sized force...

As for my LatD, I also have the 90 mutant force, all with firearms, and 10 wonderful Big Mutants (that cost a fair bit in the bits order) that I look at and wonder what might become of them... my children, my beautiful children...
