It's a poorly designed poll because "what if so many people vote for something even though they have no clue what it means that it somehow gets more votes than any other thing and wins the contest?" Are you joking?

That’s been one of their issues, though. Even before the poll, terms like “Space Brits” and “Cannon Fodder” were very popular, but lost a bit of luster when specific design features/renders meant they couldn’t be all things to all people anymore.

That's more a problem of many of the posters on Dakka (and certain other sites within the greater community).

Anytime an announcement is made whether it's by GW, WA, Northstar, etc it immediately gets followed up by nearly a page of whinging about how "it could have been so much better if only (X)was changed" or "why are they wasting their time making this when (kit that I personally want Y) would have been so much better".

It doesn't matter what the kit is. It doesn't matter what the actual quality of the kit is. There is apparently no flexibility in the most posters to do any amount of conversion work or kit-bashing. And then people wonder why GW only writes rules for models straight out of the box...

At least this poll gives the community the chance to push for at least one pie-in-the-sky dream kit. Or we might just get a slightly nicer kit of some historical that already exists...

I'm really hoping this contest doesn't come down to just one kit. I know WGA doesn't have the bandwidth to do a bunch of these kits simultaneously, but for all the issues there are a number of suggestions in the lists that definitely point to market gaps which will probably prove themselves to also be in high demand. Be cool if the outcome was "The next kit is x, and then after that we're going to start work on y and z too!"
They seem to have a few projects going at a time. We know about the Conquistadors and Aztecs, and they showed Gurkhas, but when I asked about them, Lord Marcus said (IIRC) there was a snag, so they'd be delayed. And they were working on fantasy elves, but that one got shelved, probably due to the two types of Oathmark Elves kits getting to market first. So WGA can do multiple projects, at least up to a point.

Does the person who suggested "Boxer Rebellion Japanease" is aware that Wargames Atlantic already has a Boxer Rebellion kit and that uh, the Boxer Rebellion was in China?

Are you aware that there were Japanese troops involved in the fighting?

And what makes Japanese Boxer Rebellion troops any diffrent from generic 1900s Japanese Troops?

I think we have confirmed that the names are not rigorously accurate.

And I think 1900s Japanese already appeared too.

So y'know don't beat sleeping dogs and let dead horses lie and all that.

1880-1905 Japanese would be more Accurate. Or do you want 1905-1930 Japanese, or 1870-1880?

Death Fields Imperial Japanease. That's unironically a thing we rarely see, all Sci-Fi Japanease seem to be just bootleg Samurai.

from what they said we'll get 2 kits out of it, the 'winner' of the vote which is going to be followed publicly at every step,

and a second one where they're going to work with somebody to design a kit (presumably whatever they thought was the coolest and/or most commercial?)

and i'm sure they'll also keep in mind the rest of the votes too

A retread of a kit that already exists from another manufacturer almost seems like a given considering how many of the submitted options are exactly that. I have little doubt that there are enough lemmings out there ready to vote in a popularity contest for something they can go out and buy today from Perry or Warlord because "its nice to have options"

But isn't that exactly what most people want? Cheaper and alternative versions for already popular games.
From my very limited experience of selling 3D prints, original sculpts sell far worse than count-as models useable in 40k.

WGA prints in china, as do most plastic producers, imperial japan hasn't exactly a great standing in asia...

That's just laughable, China doesn't give a gak about Imperial Japan, their main concerns are Taiwan and Tibet, if you tried to print either Taiwanease or Tibetians THEN you could get into trouble.

From experience... it depends.

"The Century of Humiliation" (ending in the founding of the PRC in 1947) remains a useful cudgel for bashing Japan and western powers and uniting the nationalist base behind the government.

I don't think an angry mob has broken the windows in the Japanese embassy, lately, but it does happen from time to time.

As for manufacturing, yes I could see a Chinese manufacturer getting in hot water for making Imperial or WWII Japanese related stuff, but it doesn't seem too likely.

In 2008 workers at a Chinese factory were making Tibetan flags. But they didn't know what they were till they saw anti-Olympic protests on TV.

Bottom line, I would not worry about a US company making some sort of fantasy/sci-fi/historical Japanese soldiers.

I know that China has censored historical games for including Tibet as an independent nation, and banned v-tubers for mentioning Taiwan. No such incidents relating to Japan

They're on the same spectrum (companies have been blasted for including Taiwan on a list of 'countries').

Tibetan and Taiwanese independence are Chinese red lines. Any mention gets a rapid and forceful response.

Anti-Japanese sentiment is a useful tool for them to stir up from time to time, especially whenever there are territorial disputes or when Japan adjusts its military posture.

I think WGA is a british company, not American, but could be wrong.

But isn't that exactly what most people want? Cheaper and alternative versions for already popular games.
From my very limited experience of selling 3D prints, original sculpts sell far worse than count-as models useable in 40k.

Sure, but what that *actually* means is a plastic kit for something that is currently only available in metal, not a plastic kit for something that already exists in plastic in multiple places.

Many of the options on the list already have 2-4 plastic kits available from other manufacturers. You can buy every form of French Napoleonic infantry imaginable in plastic today and get 30-50 minis for $30-40. At this point "cheaper" means 2 more minis in a box that costs $1 less - i.e. not meaningful. At this point "alternative" means the box has a 3:5 ratio of minis in firing poses to marching poses vs a 2:5 ratio - i.e. not meaningful. And yet theres been at least a half dozen French Nappy infantry requests on the list.

Realistically speaking, kits like that are going to get a lot of votes because they are a popular subject matter and people are going to mostly vote based on their existing interests rather than their potential wants/needs (i.e. "I play French Napoleonics now, so Im going to vote for French Napoleonics" vs "I don't play Scifi Winged Space Hussars on lizard camels, but if the kit existed I might start playing that"). The voters don't have any business concerns about product viability nor do they have any skin in the game/commitments to purchase them, etc. I.E. a vote is not a sale, only a potential sale. The number of potential sales registered via votes for French Nappy infantry in this case is likely to be very high, because they are likely to carry a lot of votes, BUT the potential that those votes convert to sales is likely going to be low because theres already a ton of plastic options for the same thing out there right now. By comparison something like Winged Hussars might not get as many votes, but those votes carry a lot more weight from a business standpoint because there are no options for that kit in plastic, and only a limited selection of options available in metal/resin - i.e. the potential for a sales conversion from those votes is significantly higher than they would be from French Nappys, in other words they are more real and meaningful, because the people voting for winged hussars or whatever don't have any other options and they are voting for the thing because its something that they actually want to buy vs something that would just be nice to have available.
