Hey everyone!

I am back, yet again...

The group of guys I play with are really easy going, no real min-max squads, no zillanids, no mech tau or eldar or whatever 'broken' is defined as now a days...

The crux of the matter...  I want to start an army around 500 pts. to cap at 1500 or 1850 pts.

Now, if I remember correctly DH were always a harder army to play / win with and if I have read correctly BA (who I always enjoyed the fluff, but never enjoyed playing broken armies vs. my casual friends) have been 'scaled down'....

The question I have then is this, (now keep in mind I have not played for a year and change) is it possible to build a list (I'd like to know from people who actually tried) of either BA or DH that could put up a good game...

Thank you for your time,

~Blank

I know you said you wanted responses from people who've tried, and I haven't, but honestly I don't think it takes a DH or BA player to answer this, just someone who's seen the lists. You mention that your group doesn't min/max or use mech or zilla lists, so your question can be adequately paraphrased as, "Are these two armies so terribly crippled that their most powerful list would stand no chance against a casually constructed Eldar/Nec/etc. list?" The answer is no, they are not so terribly crippled as that. Look in the tactics forum and you will see quite a bit of discussion on the viability of BA, and the consensus seems to be that they are not as neutered as, say, DA (which even then are not unplayable in the environment you describe).

With a pure DH army, IMHO the best way to play them is shooty with counter assault. Take as many psy cannons as possible, count on cover and shrouding to keep your boys alive and then counter charge once the enemy gets close.

Two or three shooty dreads are pretty much mandatory. at 2000 points you can easily pack in 13 psy cannons and 2 shooty dreads, obviously less at lower points. Plus you can deepstrike the majority of your units giving you decent flexibility.

It is a fun army to play but very challenging. You pretty much have to min max it though, it is not very competetive otherwise. A few bad dice roles with these guys too, and everything goes to hell. I have played games where i was winning and one bad assault round and the whole thing falls apart.

With BA, i have not played them under the new rules yet, but they look pretty tough. Nothing like they were, but they were busted broken before. Check out the tactics section, there are a few good looking lists in there.
