Did anyone play in the Combat Patrol events at Baltimore GD?

I'm thinking about running a similar sort of half day tournament at Adepticon. How was the event? Was it cool to get in a quick tournament and still take in the rest of Games Day? Was 3 hours enough time for 3 games?

I played... as the ringer. I ran the tournament, so I guess I have a biased perspective, but I think I can say that it was pretty awesome. Many of the participants were very thankful for having the tournament and were gushing praise about the terrain and scenarios. And that was before I started giving out prizes.

There were a few issues. I advertised a schedule that JUST fit into the day. Then GW adjused the RT schedule. I was not able to likewise, however. So, I sat there for an hour watching the RT's get under way, chomping at the bit for my participants to arrive. The first game started at least 15 minutes late and ended much later than I had hoped. After that, the next four games were very rushed. The second tournament also started 15 minutes late. That doesn't seem like such a big deal, but my guys were still playing through the Golden Daemon awards. When we finished with the prizes the day was done.

Another issue was that since I was behind, I did not get a chance the talk to the second tournament's participants. Instead I went straight to table match-ups.

In the first tournament there was one player that went 3-0. He finished 4th. The person that went into the second round in last place turned out to be the overall winner of the first tournament going 2-1 because he got 10 points in the 2nd round where as the 3-0 guy won with a 2 point game.

In the second tounament there was no undefeated players. There was a 4 way tie for 1st. I then went to W-L record. One of the four was 2-0-1. Two others were 2-1-0 and one guy was 1-1-1. The high score in that tournament was 11. The low score was 7. There were 18 players in the tournament. At least it started with 18. It finished with 15. That was another issue. Two people left after the first round, thinking it was a 1-round tournament Another kid snuck of to try to win some free stuff. Ironically, he would have won free stuff if he had stayed.

One of the players in the first tournament was the son of my tournament partner. He decided to not play in the second tournament to go enjoy the rest of Games Day. He got loads of stuff accomplished. There were cards given out to the kids to have signed ever time the completed an event. He got his all filled out in the second half of the day. So, I guess that it was doable, playing in a tournament, and enjoying the rest of the day.

In Chicago, I'll have my participants enter early, so there will be no problem getting the tournaments in. There should be no rushing (I hope). The good thing, then, about entering the 1st tournament is getting an extra hour of Games Day, and you get to see the Golden Daemons before the awards. The good thing about the second tournament is that you can go to the singleton events like the seminar, and have lunch at lunch time.

Chicago registration info and rules should be posted soon on the GW website. The only thing I changed from Baltimore to Chicago is the time schedule, and added a Force Organization chart with the excaption of 0-1 HQ and only 1 compulsory troop which was already in the rules. I may also change some of the scenarios. I have one I did not use in Baltimore, and four more in my head.   I had two people complain about the last scenario in the 2nd tournament.  I made a point to laugh at them for it.  There was one scenario in each tournament that was meant to be zanny.  One of them I am keeping for sure.  If I take out the other, it will be just as zanny as the original.

Any word on the Chicago Combat Patrol Tournaments? The group I am part of is running a league at the GW Libertyville store before and after Games Day, so it would be cool if I can let them know about this as well.

Thanks for the run down, David. Like Ran the Cid, I too was curious as to how it turned out.

It seems like it went well, considering the inevitable snafus that come with organizing an event. Especially when schedules change...

Interesting...

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil
