Stalwart Space Marine

Hi All,

I have a Legion of the Damned Space Marine army I am working on, and keep running into a lot of problems with my flames on the shoulder pads. They just don't look right. Any suggestions on how to make a realistic flame?

A veteran, whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

I'm awful at painting flames.

I usually just set the model on fire.

I won best army that way once.

I work from the outside in, trying to keep the colors wet, so that there can be blending.

It's best to get down your pattern first, either in line form, or in a shape that's filled in. This will give you a sense of location. Then as you put down the other colors, they can fill in.

If you want to be super detailed, remember how fire works, and it gets more intense as it gets to the hottest point. Try including, or making one area the focal "hot" point, it doesnt have to actually be on the model.

Didn't you win by setting all the OTHER armies on fire?

Da Southern New Hampshire!

remember, white/blue is hottest, then it goes to orange and red then black. Not reverse.

If at first you don't succeed, you fail.

The way i do it is rather simple, but only looks good from tabletop view, upclose its ok but yeah...its ok,no more.

One way(the-wrong-but-it-looks-good-way) is to start with a coat of dark red with a large motif, over it pass an orange or a mix of dark red+orange, leaving a recess of red and repeat it with lighter colours all over in thinner shapes.Like this more or less:

The other is to start again with a dark red colour as the base, colouring the whole of the area in it (im taking here the example of a blade).Over this area, make a slightly lighter mix of red such as red gore with fiery orange in an average 1:4 ration of orange to red,try to keep it fairly dilute also,it helps. With this in-paintbrush,go over the whole area again, leaving a decent red area on the tip of the hilt (so on the area closest to the hand,or to the ground in the case of your shoulderpad). With the correct mix,the colours will blend visually without any actual need to wetblend them.Like before,do this over and over until you have only the very edge left.I usually just highlight it in white, along with a small portion of the sides of the item around the end. Here's an example on my Inq Lord:
