Working on some mold boxes tonight. Sculpted a few little pits - some piles of clothing and boxes plus a few neat looking bits I had lying around that I wanted copies of. Also had a decent amount of scrap wood pieces that I wanted a mold of as well so got those all prepared and ready to pour.
Also got paint on a few barricades. Never too many of those!

@Staggsy - perfect weekend afternoon project (or bright and early before everyone else wakes and distracts you )
Tried out a new rust technique showed me by a friend.
What you do is to gather some iron filings - I literally, just took a pair of bastard files to a piece of stock steel.
Then glue them on to the areas you want to be crusty rusty. Let dry then coat with vinegar. Repeat as many times as you need to get it thoroughly rusty.
These last two pictures are of a piece that was coated thinly with vinegar 3 times with at least 15 mins between coats. It's still a bit wet around the outside actually.
The texture comes from stippling filler material onto the base plastic, then coating in PVA before priming - another new idea I'm trying out for rusty areas that's looking to work pretty well.

Trying out some more of that rust effect and I'm really pleased. It seems that the finer the filings - the better and faster it works. Also, stronger acids and oxidisers seem to work better, but I'm hesitant to recommend anything stronger than household vinegar to the internet haha
Gave a galvanized metal effect a go today.
&
Turned out kinda 'alright' - and this is the 7th iteration

Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate it.
Off to the weathering. Started out doing some brown smoosh on and wipe off but it ended up being to dusty looking. Went back to plain yellow and hit it with a red-based bown color. Again, did the old smoosh on and wipe of technique (side note: I'm really starting to prefer that to a wash for broad areas of shading. Must be prop-buuilding that's corrupting me :p ). Anyways, the red base really helped keep it vibrant so stuck with that. Did a little bit of spot shading with the same color thinned to a wash.
Next up will be doing the ground before I get too much on the plane in case of mistakes. Then I'll be adding rust, chipping and smoke stains to the plane.

Looks excellent. Funny you mention the smoosh and wipe Technique, I've just started using it again after years of not, and I can't think why I stopped!

It really is great. I often find techniques or tricks that I've abandoned for one reason or another come back later and work well. Probably just means I wasn't doing it right the first time
I'm doing set/prop design for 5 rooms at an escape games place near me, so learning/relearning all kinds of new tricks and techniques.

That yellow is looking fantastic. May I suggest a purple wash over the yellow to deepen the recesses.
I use the wipe off method too, I also have taken to painting many different layers and then getting a cotton bud and some strong thinners, such as pure isopropyl alcohol, or methylated spirit, or (being very very careful) acetone, and rubbing the layers back, gives a great worn effect. Please forgive me, your work is so brilliant, not suggesting for one second there is anything I could do better. Just wanted to share.

Never tried a purple for yellow shading - will have to give that a go for sure! Planning on doing some more work this weekend. Thanks for the ideas!

I'd second that, it can be really effective for yellow, orange or flesh tones.

Hi my neglected dakka friends. I brought some new photos
I took the advice and used a couple of purple washes to finish my weathering. Ended up starting over twice on the small wing piece which was my test piece, but quite happy with it in the end.
I also grossly underestimated the amount of time it would take to do this build. It ended up being 9hrs. to build then another 18 to paint and finish haha. Oh well, it's one of my dream build so just happy to have the chance to build it.
If any of you are interested in seeing this in person, it will be displayed at Adepticon 2018 at the This Is Not a Test booth. You can also try out their post- apoc skirmish game if you're so inclined.
I took a lot of photos, so I'll spoiler the rest for the sake of scrolling. I also included a few shots at the end with my post- apoc Wasteland Centaur for scale . He still needs a name now that I think of it...
Thanks in advance for your constructive criticisms and comments
