X-Babies were actually a thing back in the late 80s / early 90s. Cloned versions of the x-men.

Spoiler:

The Avengers versions also appeared (Mitey 'Vengers) and the Brotherhood of Mutants (Brotherhood of Bulies).

They're not exactly chibi / babies, when I look at the Jean Grey renders. She has boobs and her head isn't that big as it should be for true chibi style. It's more like CMON's interpretation of heroic chibis.

Eh, at least it's different from what we saw before as Marvel miniatures. 'cause, let's be honest, doing them "as in the comics" is already common enough.

This is a reverse-engineered guess, but I've noticed, especially since KS started, IP licensors, particularly Marvel and DC, have licensed more different games than in the old days, when your favorite IP was stuck with a craptastic game system (who else remembers the WotC XMen card game?). Frex, iirc, with Star Wars, FFG had the rights for miniature games, while Hasbro had them for boardgames (and, yes, you could read between the FFG lines that the two companies came to an agreement when it came to Imperial Assault...). With Marvel, WizKids (HeroClix), Atomic Games (?) (Marvel Crisis Protocol) and CMON/Whoever (Marvel United) either wanted a sculpting style that distinguished them from the other Marvel games, or their differences were part of the license.

Well, I always wanted to paint my favorite Marvel characters but somehow everything that was on the market did not grab my attention enough. Those MU models did it despite the Chibi style ... so they did something right.

i'd imagine they have to put the Marvel game in whenever their partner who's actually got the licence wants since they're the ones who are taking it to retail

(last time round even those used to CMON delivering stuff after retailers got theirs were shocked by how fast the base game was in the shops, as it looked to have been well into manufacturing before the KS even happened, it wouldn't surprise me if it's the same this time)

Also, Marvel is more selling that an old reference like Master of the Universe. More appealing to lure in a lot of backers and explode the counters.

If CMON needs more money right now, it makes more sense to start with Marvel first.

We're happy to announce that due to some changes in English product retail distribution, we will be making much of the original Marvel United Kickstarter material available (including promos) as add-ons in our upcoming Marvel United: X-Men campaign!

The bottom line is that the non-Kickstarter Exclusive expansions, with the exception of Enter the Spider-verse, will NOT be hitting retail, making those boxes exclusive by default. We wanted to make sure that previous backers who held out for retail for certain expansions still had the chance to purchase them, and also for people discovering the core box at retail to have the chance to add more variety to their game. While we are still working out the details on how it will be offered, we do want to share some important points with you.

First, the original Marvel United Core Box will NOT be part of the offering. Second, you can expect a price raise on most products as compared to the original Kickstarter due to lower print runs as well as the rising cost of component materials. Third, like the original campaign, we will offer the option to ship in two waves; anything ordered that's from the first campaign will ship to backers during the 2ND WAVE. We'll see you at the launch!

2020 results are out

https://cmon-files.s3.amazonaws.com/pdf/cmon_file/file/592/210326_2021_results_e.pdf

Some points of note
- Sales of $25 million down $5 million on 2019
- Loss of $4.9 million - had they maintained the 2019 level they would have broke even.
- Reserves $17.6 million
- Europe makes up 33.5% of their sales new VAT rules for 2021 might affect that in future

By sales channels

Kickstarter $16,542,380 65.8%
Online store and game conventions $110,114 0.4%
Wholesales $8,485,656 33.8%

Our revenue decreased by approximately 17.5% to approximately US$25.1 million for the year ended 31 December 2020 from
approximately US$30.5 million for the year ended 31 December 2019, primarily due to the decrease in revenue from board games. Revenue from board games decreased by approximately 20.7% to approximately US$21.9 million for the year ended 31 December 2020 from approximately US$27.6 million for the year ended 31 December 2019.

In terms of sales channels, revenue via Kickstarter decreased to approximately US$16.5 million for the year ended 31 December 2020 from approximately US$16.8 million for the year ended 31 December 2019, which was mainly due to the decrease in recognition of sales from 3 Kickstarter games in 2020 compared to 4 Kickstarter games in 2019.

North America and Europe remained as our major markets, with North American and European sales making up approximately 87.4% and 87.5% of our total revenue combined for the years ended 31 December 2020 and 2019 respectively.

No wonder they keep making those frantically one after the other.

So that leaves the argument I've seen tossed around dakkadakka that because a few companies had up years during the pandemic, all companies everywhere must be making more money and that consumers must have more money to throw at all of them despite massive upticks in unemployment and underemployment, a smoking ruin.

Or I suppose they can still rationalize their bad argument in that CMON didn't do as well because they didn't include the right model that person wanted in their latest KS campaign. XD

The only CMON game I purchase for is ASOIAF, covid really curtailed the releases for the game in 2020. Combine that with Asmodee's awful distribution and I can see how they lost a lot of money in the year. The first releases for the game (War Mammoths and Mother Of Dragons) only came out in the UK in the past week.

That is in the UK, the America/Australian release seems to be up in the air. Last week the CMON video featuring the War Mammoths was pulled in short order and a lot of retailers Stateside have been told the release may be put back to August, apologies.

It appears the official distribution list in the US have moved the releases to May. Not great but not as bad as August.

Received my Mother of Dragons last week but Mammoths are back at the sorting office as missed today’s post. Looks like my Stormcrow Dervishes order won’t be fulfilled dispute preordering over 15 months ago).

Thanks for the update Aeneades, May is not too long a wait if they hit that release date. I feel your pre order pain, over a year since I pre ordered the Hrakkars. I was an idiot and pre ordered Mother of Dragons three times due to forgetfulness, great sculpts though.

The sick problem with Asmodee distribution is that I have had those, and several other units still on preorder, since last October. It is surreal that some stores can get product a year early, meaning it is done and sitting in warehouses, while others wait.

ASoIaF will always break my heart, as an incredible game, stuck in the hands of complete imbeciles.
