I've had a lot of good experience with Inking my Guardsmen: their uniforms came out looking like some serious leather when I put a ton of chestnut ink on there, and I was wondering how I could apply this somewhere else.  I wanted to have some mostly purple type armor goin on, (probably "Liche Purple" in Citadel terms) and I wanted to do purple ink to make the shadowing easier since I find this technique to be pretty easy.  The only problem is that the only purple ink I can find is rather lighter than Liche Purple.  What I was wondering was if anyone had tried adding black ink to another ink to make it darker, if that worked out or not.  Or, in general, if anyone has any better ideas for getting a really nice shadowing pattern going on below the armor plates.

Yes you can mix inks. Just do some test models to see what looks best. Once you've found something you like, I'd suggest that you mix up a big supply of your ink combination. You're doing a whole army with it, you don't want to have to keep re-mixing it and getting varying results.

For example, on my Blood Angels, one of the first steps I did on them was an ink wash. I mixed a number of inks, plus some water, plus some clear medium to give the right consistency and color for washing my models.

You don't have to ink purple on purple. You could use straight black if you need dark. Don't be too linear in your thinking. Some of the most impressive and striking models have different colors working together. The PP Trollbloods are a great example. Blue skin, pink recesses, up to fleshtone highlights. All very different colors, but all working together to create a really neat look.

Right behind you...

You could also try mixing blue ink with the purple you have to darken it.
