Greetings!

I picked up the BFG starter box at a small Con yesterday, and finally got through the rules (the online ones). I had a couple questions.

First, the Ships of the Gothic Sector PDF seems inconsistent--The pricing for the Chaos fleet is different from the entry to the fleet list (for instance, the Styx is listed as 275 in its entry and 290 on page 128 (26 of pdf). Which do I use?

Second, the box came with all of the cruisers pre-built. Unfortunately, that leaves me stuck with the choices of the previous owner. It looks like I'll need to get some more Cruisers because the previous owner had too many heavy cruisers.

Imperial Navy:
1 Mars
1 Overlord
1 Gothic
1 Dictator

Chaos:
1 Hades
1 Styx
1 Archeron
1 Devastation

That means I have 2 IN heavy cruisers and 2 Cruisers (need 2 more to field both heavies, then, right?). What would you suggest?

It means I need 5 more Chaos cruisers to field both (or start ripping items off... easiest to do with lance turrets--suggestions?).

What else would you add to expand the fleets out to, say, 2000 points?

Use the PDF. Those have been recently updated. Our group just wrote the new point costs in the book for ease.

For your Imperial, you can use the Overlord Cruiser as a Tyrant if you want. Just count the Dorsal Lances as Turrets.  As for expanding the list, I'd pick up a couple squadrons of Escorts.  They've all got their uses, so it wouldn't hurt to buy at least one blister of each.  If you want a Battleship, I'd go with the Emperor.  It's slow, but it packs one hell of a punch.  As for a Cruisers, maybe a couple Lunars, and a Dictator to help level you out.

I doubt many would have a problem if you where to use your Styx as another Devestation Class as well.  I can't offer much suggestions for Chaos, since I don't play them.

If you want knew ships though, your best bet would be to check Ebay out first. I've built a massive fleet for just a couple hundred bucks. If you can't find what you need there, then GW isn't bad on the BFG prices either.

Well, I picked up a Massive Imperial fleet online.. It's got a Retribution class battleship... though if that turns out to not work out, I can always convert it to an Emperor. Now I'll have loads of cruisers, light cruisers, some space marine stuff, and escorts from which to choose.

My friend & I played our first game last night... he used a paper FW tau army to figure out what he wanted before going in deep with Forgeworld. My poor chaos didn't fare well at all--I'll chalk that up to learning.

Anyway, we came back from it with a couple questions. One I don't readily see on the FAQ:

If you have a squadron of ships firing at a target (with weapon batteries), and one is within 15 cm, though the rest are not, do you shift the strength to the left? What if you have some outside of 15cm?

Similarly, if you have a ship firing weapon batteries upon a squadron with ships at varying distances, how do you determine where the shots go? Is it just the closest one counts for firing (thus shifting the firing column to the left if it's within 15cm) or do you count the furthest away?

Thanks.

If you have some inside of 15CM, but some that aren't you can opt to fire with the 15cm shift. But only those ships inside of 15cm can fire. It's generally best to just have the entire squadron fire instead. You can also take the option to split fire, and have the ships inside of 15cm target a specific ship, and have others target another ship.

And for the other way around, it works with the same idea. If you have a squadron of 4 escorts, with 2 of them more then 30cm away from your whole squadron, you can opt to not take that right column shift, but with that, you could only hit those two ships within 30cm. If you opt to hit the ships furthest away, then you can attack the entire squadron, you just have to take that right hand shift.

That's how are group does it at least.

Actually, you calculate the dice per ship, at the range they are at; there's nothing that says all must have the shift, or none can use it. No ship firing can opt to use or not use a column shift. Your way is fine for a house rule, but that's all it is.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
