Hi, the IG army I'm working on right now is based on lower tech weaponry... that's no energy weapons, all lasguns are being modeled as autoguns, etc. So my question is, is it possible to make a decent IG army without lascannons, plasma guns, and melta guns? It doesn't have to be really competitive but I don't want it to be terrible.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

You have to be able to kill tanks.

You cannot rely on Ordnance to kill vehicles, so if you're not taking Lascannons you're taking Deep Striking Meltaguns.

Guard can live without Las/Plas, but those that don't take Las/Plas take AC/Plas and Deep Striking Vets with Meltaguns.

In my happy place, I'm in my happy place...

I have an IG regiment based on the 2nd Criminal Regiment (an artillery unit) and don't have much in the way of energy weapons either. I will warn you that I play this list for fun and not for competition. But one thing you can do is include demolition charges in special weapons teams. And lots of missile launchers

As mentioned above you have to rely on your artillery/tanks to take out enemy armor if there is a lot. Otherwise having those missile teams can hand most AV12 vehicles. Especially eldar.

Yeah, auto cannons and ML's will be the only solution. SKip grenade launchers, they are a waste of points.

I run a list all the time with very few las cannons but i always have some, and i make up for it with lots of dropping units with meltas and plasmas.

you can make it happen, but playing IG is tough enough as is, further handicapping yourself is just going to make it even rougher.

I play an undoctrined IG army that does not use Bassies or Lascannons. I do use a few (3) Plasmaguns and a few (3) Meltaguns, but these don't tend to do much but die. I do field 6 Missile Launchers and 3 Autocannons and 3 Battle Cannons in the army, as well as a few well spaced Meltabombs. I do have trouble with Land Raiders and the like, but enough hits will eventually grant me a glancing 5 or 6. Thus far, oddly enough, a few Psykers have killed more Land Raiders than the rest of my army with the machine curse, though I rarely manage to roll it for anything other then Bugs.

Mauleed successfully ran a missile launcher guard army a while back. But he had a LOT of MLs (around 18, IIRC), and wasn't averse to plasma guns.

I have to agree with the consensus -- you may well get beaten snotless if you forego them both without getting pretty exotic. That said, here are some slightly exotic ways to go:
-three squads of demolition charges might help against tanks, but they'll be unpredictable.
-Rough Riders with lances will help a little against MEQ infantry, but they're an expensive replacement for those lost guns.
-Inquisitors tooled for close combat and Assassins could help vs Infantry.
-Some Sisters with meltabombs (the bomb version isn't off limits, I hope) could help out, too.

That said, otherwise I would max out on your autocannons -- don't even bother with other special weapons except maybe a flew flamers -- and maybe get a lot of Chimerae to tack hunter-killer missiles onto.

Sound more viable?
