Ok, another thread in my continuing series of "Questions For Noobs"...

I want to take a Grey Knight Grand Master and 4 Terminator Retinue as an ally for my sisters army, mostly for a little extra melee punch in 3000 point games, and maybe as a replacement for the repentia and penitent engines I am running now.

Anyway, I am looking at Grand Master, 3 vanilla termies and one with Incinerator, because that is what they came with. I plan on tossing in the Haulocaust ability because it would appear to rock socks against hordes like Orks and the like.

My question though is how to deliver these glitter boys into battle. Does it make sense to deep strike if they are just going to be sitting and shooting for a turn, allowing their intended targets to run, gun them down or even get the assault on them? Or am I better off slogging them, relying on the Aegis and their armor to keep them safe until they can get into hand to hand (all while spraying handy bolter fire)? I don't have the option of putting them in a Landraider unless we are playing Apocalypse, and anyway I don't own one, so that is out (though it could be cool.)

Follow up question: If I do want to use them predominantly as deep strikers, is it tacky to mount them all on silver surfboards?

the spire of angels

a couple things you need to know

1.grey knight termies are the best the loyalists have

2.they are good at shooting and better in CC with a S6 power weapon that goes at intiative

3.if your using them to assualt you need a full squad because 5 will never survive to get there especially in such a high points game.

4.psycannons are best because they have range and ignore invul saves, incinerators can be very effective especially for terrain hugging armies but you have to get them there and risk a close deepstrike to be effective.

5.when it comes to walking or DSing they can do either pretty well as shrouding protects them from most long range return fire while they march upon the enemy with storm bolters and psycannons blazing.  DS ing them gets them anywhere on the board immediately but they have to soak fire for 1 turn before they can assault.

6.lastly they have acess to some really interesting wargear and psychic options my favortie 3 being sacred incense, grimore of true names and hammerhand on the grand master.

In my happy place, I'm in my happy place...

For these guys and your current configuration I would recommend DS vs anything that has inv. saves (harlequins..). For other opponents I would recommend trying the hidden DS. Where you drop them close to enemy lines but out of most of LOS for getting them killed. With these guys if your opponents charge you have them where you want them.

Hmmm I think you are right Orion, my original thought was to use them as a reactive "this unit has to die now" sort of deal, and I think that applies here as well.

In the 3000 point games etc I am going to run them with the Incense and Grimoir, but with an Anointed weapon for the Grand Master. Is there a point to HammerHand if you have a +2str Force weapon anyway? I thought Hammerhand said you couldn't use another close combat weapon. I don't have the codex in front of me, so I will have to check when I get home.

Thanks for the tips!

Hammerhand gives him a strength 8 attack, which is useful for busting tanks...Or against a Ctan
