According to the RAW wordings, I'm wondering how we all interpret his rules....

My question is whether or not he is considered a company master.

Azrael HAS the "Rites of Battle" rules but the strict wording of the rules do him no good UNLESS he is considered a company master it seems to me.

I've heard that if Azrael is your only HQ choice that you cant bring a Company Champion within your command squads, this would also be directly effected depending whether or not he is considered a company master.

I would say, that Azrael, if indeed grants the "Rites of Battle" rules to your army, that he MUST be a company master .(otherwise the power would not work even though he has it according to the wording in the DA codex)...if he is a company master, then of course you can bring your champion in a command squad.

RAW has me a bit confused here obviously.

Azreal is a company master like how terminators are in terminator armor.

How do we know this and when was it determined?

the un-official FAQ from JJ actually says he isn't:

Command Squads: As per the Codex, ³For every Company Master in the army, one Command Squad may upgrade one model to a Company Champion,? - so the Supreme Grand Master Azrael may not take a Company Champion as by RAW only a Company Master can have one. Can he take a 'Chapter Champion' (or equivalent) instead or was this an oversight?

A: Azrael is not a Company Master and therefore his command squad does not have a Company Champion.

I would guess he suppose to get the effects of rites of battle despite the odd wording on it though.

The Azreal part or the Terminator part?

Azreal has the special rule that wold only work if he was a commander, so everyone will treat him as a commander..

Terminators are described as wearing the terminator armor in the SM codex although it is not listed int their profile, so everyone treats them as wearing it and getting the 5+ save.

I meant everyone will play it that way even if it does not say it explicitly.
