Has anyone ever run a marine tank company.  I was wondering how well it would do.

Something along the lines of 2 preds, 4 las plas squads in razorbacks, speeders and so on.

Could it do well against the average lists?

It'll do pretty well against average lists. It's got a lot of firepower, tons of Armor, and a decent amount of mobility. It's lacking a little countercharge, but a single assault squad can fix that. Against top notch lists, or other shooty lists, the razorbacks will drop like flies.

For fun, though, it's a great list, and can really run with a lot of the 2nd tier lists like Sisters, IG, etc.

technically i guess you could say my dark angel marine list is quasi tank company with a land raider, 2 whirlies, 3 dreads, 2 speeders and a bunch of bikes. i also know a guy who runs 4X 6 man tac squads(las/plas of course) with las cannon razorbacks, 2 X 6 man missle dev squads with las cannon razorbacks and a big jump unit with an attached chappy at 1850 and its pretty brutal for a DIY marine army.

I've got a pretty decent armored list in the Army List section. I decided to roll with 2 las razors, 3 HB razors, 3 vindies, 1 tech marine, 4 las plas squads and an undetermined amount of tornados. I've considered switching some of the speeders for a counter-charge assault squad, but the vindies rip open anything that gets anywhere close to my advancing tanks. The tech marine is there solely to keep the vindies up. The vindies, the 3 HB razors and one of the las razors move 12" first turn, the last las razor hides behind the vindy line with my tech marine and his tech servies inside. They pop smoke and usually survive the first round of shooting. After the 12" move, the tech marine jumps out and for the rest of the game, he follows the vindies around (none of them move more than 6") and fixes anything that gets broke like. He just stands next to 2 of them, the 3rd is on its own.

The most entertaining thing about the list is that the marines never really take any casualties for the most part. People freak out about tanks being in their faces. It's a completely fun list to run and I really suggest it for casual gaming.

If it makes sense, then it's not RAW.

Apocalypse special rules aside, the 'basic' Marine armor group can stand tall among 2nd tier armies, and sometimes bloody 1st tier armies or eke out a win. This is especially true if you use the Blood Angels or Dark Angels rules, which feature significantly cheaper vehicles.

The key here is that Predators and even Dreads are quite cheap for the number of guns they carry, and, unlike most mech lists, your infantry is no pushover/afterthought. Speed can be provided by 'speeder squadrons, which are also no pushover on firepower.

I would suggest three Preds, two Dreads, six Tornadoes, and as many Razors with either Plas/Plas, Las/Plas, or Flamer/Melta as you can fit in the force. My preferred setup for Preds is lascannon turrets and heavy bolter sponsons -- that way you can stand and lay the smackdown on an armored vehicle, or move and still put out a respectable number of HB shots ('defensive weapons'). I've never had more than two Preds and one Dread -- I'm model poor -- but their performance leads me to belive they would do well in larger numbers.
