I've tried the custom decals too. No luck. Since the Mantis Warrior badge (the old one anyway) is on a roundel, I just print them out and paper, cut them out and glue them on. Works well for flat surfaces but wouldn't work on curved. Yours is a bit pointy for that. I'd go with WM's suggestion.

What did you try? I've had good results just using a copy shop that was advertised on a railroad modelers' forum. It's apparently pretty easy with the right printers and decal paper. The right printers being the trick of course, but that's what copy shops are for

Yeah, the problem there is the ink-jet ink; it's water soluble.

Couple of things you can try (don't know if either are possible, just thinking aloud);

Do you have access to a laser-jet printer. That should solve the ink running problem. Don't know how the decal sheet will react to it.

Try a layer of varnish over the printed transfers. It will protect the ink from the water. You may have to cut them out (or score as I usually do) very close to their edges. Don't know if it will prevent the transfers from coming off the paper.
Careful adding the varnish, if it's water-based it will also have the possibility of smudging the ink. A spray would be best... or a non-water-based varnish....

...I did an experiment with printed (ink-jet) "posters" and my Humbrol varnishes.
*after a long search* Found it:
Spoiler:

While this was for gluing posters to terrain, it does show that a layer of varnish prevents the ink bleed.

That turned out beautifully! Leave it to Dr H to come through in a pinch.

Decals look great. What’s going on with the sensor on the dread?

I'm glad it worked. Good job, look nice.

That's why we're all here, learning from each other's experiences to improve as a whole. Something for us all to remember for the future; home-made decals and varnish.

Thanks guys!! I think ya missed my question at the bottom! Whats the best loadout (in all situations) for the sarge model?? i havent read the codex yet or even played a game with SM so i want to build a nuetral sarge model. Thanks!! <3

PS; Whaley, yes that sensor module i put on the front to cover up the ultramarine logo. I liked the forward motion of it, and i think the dread models are squat and boxy. I know it isnt, scientifically accurate, but i also like the positioning of the turquoise tertiary right there.

Thanks all for the interest! Dr H no worries man, you scored so huge with the decal thing. I swear its made all the difference! I cant thank you enough!

Well ive actually made some significant progress....on a couple fronts. FIRSTLY, the dread and final sarge and completely finished. Ill post pics of those things later with the complete so far army shots because im only 2 solid marines away from checkpoint one. 20 marines, 1 dread, 1 captain, totally painted.
Secondly it so happens that i was recommended a can of some really great primer. Rustoleum Touch n Tone Matte Black primer. Man this stuff i like almost MORE the p3 black which is my solid go to, prior to airbrushing a zenithal coat. ALSO, its 3.99 at autozone. Amazing.
Amyways, the captain was a pleasure and the first termi ive painted in years. Such a pleasure. As much as i want to show the dread ill wait for a few more days. Instead heres some off the cuff shots with my phone of the finished captain. <3

SPACE SHARKKKKSSSS!!!!

The lines on the cloth is an interesting technique. What made you go that way instead of normal blending?

Made in us
Mounted Kroot Tracker

LOL Damo! Enjoy the drank my friend!! Its the holidays!! FK IT!

Thanks Cam!

Whaley: There is normal blending first. only some highlights have been added that, and why; texture, practice.

case in point: the inner cloak from the front, left of his left leg, was the last highlights i did and its the most effective, vs, the front loin cloth which i did first which is a little too aggressive. i used a darker and more watered down grey after and it gave the effect i was more after. Only reason i didnt redo the other parts is that its so subtle to the naked eye its just not worth the time. Besides, i painted the black with mostly thinned down grey, so fixing anything requires a full on base coat, which would have meant id have to redo ALL of the black cloak to make it match.

Certainly not trying to be critical. It looks cool, and is beyond my skill/patience (which is why I make Damo paint for me).

THanks all for the interest!! <3 Whaley thanks for the tip: i decided to make an instagram account. If yall care, my handle is Beboppaints.

Anyways, the dread is now completely finished, including all its weapon attachments, though i only photoed the plasma cannon because its by far the coolest looking. Ive included a main photo and a bunch of shots in the spoilers. He was a bit tougher to photo i guess from the size. i dunno. Anyways, just TWO marines left and im there! And ive already got # 19, missle launcher has been base coated and is ready to go. He is shown below Cant wait to finish these two guys and move on to the transports. I still am not sure about that element as i really need to sit down with the rules and look at lists. Any thoughts on transports for SM? Rhinos? Drop Pods? Thoughts?

Spoiler:

cool thanks for looking guys
