Good report!

Point for point, T4 S4 Dwarf shooters/shooting beats WE S3 T3 shooting/shooters in a shootout. But you do outrange them, so if you keep the Glade Guard well back, you can still pick off a couple while staying alive. The other option is to deploy the Glade Guard way off to the flank, and march them 10” for a couple of turns in a long flanking maneuver. The dwarves can turn to face them, but if they do so your fighting units coming up the front can trash them easily. If the dwarves hold their facing to the front, you can pour bowfire into the flank.   The other option is to use a screen of advancing dryads, with small gaps, to block some of the dwarf shooters' LOS to your Glade Guard, while allowing your GG to focus their fire on one unit of dwarf shooters.  Or screen your entire line GG, and just shoot OVER the screen at any dwarf units (like war machines) which are up on a hill.

But as always, against dwarf shooters the old 40k rule of thumb “Shoot the assaulty bits, assault the shooty bits” holds true. You’re best off to either flank charge them quick, or stuff Dryads in their face to distract them. Maybe shoot the dwarves just to whittle down their numbers a little so the Dryads have an easier time getting the outnumber. Outnumber + Fear is critical against Dwarves, who have the best LD in Warhammer. Remember also that Wild Riders cause Fear on the charge as long as they have a Musician (and that Pursuit into Fresh Enemy and Overrunning both count as charging), so even one or two surviving WR can usually go straight through a war machine crew.

Dryads are also the best solution for an Organ Gun. Between T4, Immune to Psychology, and a Ward Save, Dryads are the only unit the OG doesn’t reliably butcher.

“The Dryads charge, break and destroy the cannon crew, advancing into the cannon.”

“The Dryads and Wild Riders are completely open while they fail to destroy either war machine.”

Say what now? As soon as the crew are dead, the attackers automatically spike the warmachine and it’s removed. It doesn’t interfere with your movement, much less tie you up in HTH.

I wouldn’t ever bother fighting Iron Breakers unless it was by putting a Treeman or Treekin into their flank or rear. Their saves are too good for the low-strength guys, even too good for the big trees to deal with if you’re in their front. If flanking or “rear-ing” a unit of IB with either of the big hitty tree units, I would consider throwing in a unit of Wardancers doing the KB dance to add kills. But only then. Otherwise engaging IB is a waste of time, and is often just handing your opponent points.

Against dwarves the most reliable approach is usually to kill the war machines and shooters, then kill the softer blocks (slayers, smaller blocks of warriors or longbeards), and usually it’s just best to avoid the real hammer/anvil units and the icky runed-up characters. At least until the endgame when (if) it’s clear that you’re well ahead on points, at which point it can be fun to multiple-flank/rear charge an expensive block, or just to throw a unit of dancers into the face of a character and try to get the KB.

Ahhhh so. Dwarfs are the stuff of nightmares for me, have actually made me quite fantasy all together when I tried restarting in 6th ed ... So congrats on the minor loss, pretty respectible. Surfing up with the trees was a nice touch, too bad the dismount meant sucking fire, though way to be on the forest spirit saves.

Big blocks of tough things give me fits with any army, and seeing those 2 bear down on your lads didn't look good either.

What gear did you give the stag rider?

Yes, but remember I had a game breaking rule from the campaign, which
allowed me to avoid his melee blocks early on. Me picking Scouts almost made him
pick Diplomacy to avoid being challenged by skirmishy goodness who have first deploy.

The balanced list approach hurt me as well. I imagine Thunderer heavy is kind of a
balanced Dwarf list, is it not?

I'd say so. Most of the power gamer dwarf lists don't have any thunderers at all. With my favorite being thorek, 3 squads of warriors, 1 squad of longbeards, 8 bolt throwers, and 2 organ guns.... it's a nasty little combo that is sure to make you lose all your friends

Angron- crushing the theme and fluff of armies one horde at a time.

The bolt Throwers wouldn't bother me as much. Skirmishers! Yay!

But 8 of them??? Oi Vey.
