Excellent, and the fire effect is particularly good on his left pad.

Thanks for the kinds words, everyone. OSL and lighting effects are still unexplored country for me, so Judge Fire is very much an experiment. If/when I try something similar, it shoudl turn out better. In the meantime, I finished a couple of Space Cowboys:

These are two members of the Tranquility Crew (a Firefly homage) from Blackwater Gulch. They should be seeing action in a Five Parsecs crew. I have also started some more terrain-from-garbage:

All those evil judges look amazing, really fun miniatures in their weirdness. But I really love the pathfinder sniper with the cloak, I'm a sucker for such poses.

Looking forward to your upcycled (sounds so much better than "from garbage") terrain.

The Medge terrain sprue is so good for that sort of stuff.

For all that they're rather squat, you've absolutely done them justice. Love the Shepherd.

Thanks. Before digging them out of storage, I had a vivid memory of their being cool Oldhammer sculpts. Sadly, they don't really compare to, say, Jes Goodwin sculpts from the same era. Still, they painted up nicely, I think.

I didn't notice how badly the Shepherd leaned. I very carefully bent his tab to have him more upright. I need to add some foliage to his base.

Thanks, I'm glad you liked them. I don't know that they'll ever see action on the tabletop, though. You know who will? These guys:

These are the last two in the Tranquility Crew set from Blackwater Gulch. I was a little irritated by the not-Kaylee model for wearing a form-fitting coverall instead of the shapeless thing the original character wore--painting such lovingly-scultped butts on what are meant to be wargaming miniatures always makes me feel a little creepy. At least she's fully-clothed. Not-Simon's hands were separate pieces, and while I managed to get the pistol hand in pretty much the right position, the other hand tuned out kind of wonky.

Anyway, the set is finished:

I need to find models for Zoe, River, and Wash someday, but for now it's on to different projects. I hope to have my ramen-bowl houses done in the next couple of days, and then maybe some of the street scenery I got with Mars Attacks? Who knows...

They are very nicely done - Did you say they were to be used in Stargrave?

They look excellent, especially the Simon. Hasslefree maybe for the missing crew?

They could be, but they're more likely to appear in Five Parsecs. I should probably give Stargrave another try, but it didn't spark joy in the same way as Frostgrave does.

inmygravenimage wrote:They look excellent, especially the Simon. Hasslefree maybe for the missing crew?

Simon is probably my least favorite model in the set, mostly because of how hard it was to drill and pin those tiny little hands. I am proud of his vest, though. Thanks for the headsup, I'll look into Hasslefree.

Thanks for the link. Those are pretty cool models, but they are a little extreme compared to the Blackwater Gulch models. Their space dwarfs would be pretty good for Deadzone, though.

I haven't gotten a lot of models done since my last update, but I did get some scenery done:

These little hab units are made from instant ramen containers, with some help from the Maelstrom's Edge scenery sprue and some pipes from a Platformer set. The weathering kind of got away from me, but it looks much better at tabletop distance than in these photos. I added some graffiti to break up the otherwise plain surfaces.

I got this car with my Mars Attacks! kickstarter stuff many, many years ago. I don't remember who made it (it wasn't Mantic-- they outsourced it to someone), but I can guess how it was made-- they smashed a toy car with a hammer, added some cut sprue for bricks, then made a RTV rubber mold. The cast is pretty rough, but it looks good enough at arm's length to use as scenery. I have one more smashed car and another that is undamaged from this set that I'll try to work into the queue. If they go smoothly, I have some more street scenery from the same KS to work on as well.

The theme for the Dakka Challenge for November is Catch Me If You Can. I'm still weighing options, and I may put up a poll when I narrow it down to two or three.

I looked at those, but I didn't want to buy a whole boxed game just for the models. Also, I have had these lying around for while.

Here's what I am thinking of for the Painting Challenge this month:
1) a repaint of this classic Assassin:

2) Glam the Wardancer:

3) some Skavenslaves:

4) Blackwater Gulch bandits:

They all fit the theme in one way or another, and they're all in the painting queue as of now. Which do you, the loyal reader, think I should enter? Please give me your answer in the poll!

I went with the wardancer, due to his innate sliceyness. Hard to catch something without any hands

Also the not-serenity crew looks awesome!

I vote for the Blackwater gulch bandits; something different and a good fit for the theme.

We have been playing a lot of Deadzone with the release of the third edition. I got into Mantic SF stuff because of their Enforcers, but since my son almost always chooses them, I have been experimenting with the other forces instead. Recently, I've been playing Marauders, using my old 40K Orks to fill in some gaps in my Mantic collection. I painted this guy to add some fun and mayhem:

Boomer the hobgoblin runs around throwing grenades. Smoke is vital for Maruaders because they have no Armor, and frag is fun because of the scatter. I don't know if he will be worth the points, but gaming is about more than winning, right?

Also, I think Glam is finished:

For reference, this is the outfit I based him on:

edit: I guess I'm not allowed to keep this photo in my gallery. Go here to see the sweet glam rock fashion.

I'm posting these photos mostly so I can see if anything needs touchup or got missed. Once I'm satisfied, I'll add something to his base and enter him in the challenge.
