Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Ok, here is my 'Master List'. I have one for every army its generally an upper limit to prevent me from overspending on an army, and allows me to field my entitre collection in one sitting. Technically this isnt a master list as I have spare magi and chariots, but then rules are meant to be broken

HIGH ELF ARMY 4000pts

CHARACTERS 1541pts - Allowed 3 Lord, 5(8) Hero

Seraphon - Prince of Caledor 451pts Prince (150pts) on Sun Dragon (230pts), Lance (6pts), Armour of Caledor (25pts, 2+ save Dragon armour), Ring of Fury (40pts, Bound Spell

12 Archers 137pts @11pts with Musician (5pts)

15 White Lions 255pts @15pts with Full Command (30pts)

15 Phoenix Guard 255pts @15pts with Full Command (30pts)

6 Silver Helms 162pts @21pts, Shields @2pts, Champion (16pts), Musician (8pts)

6 Dragon Princes 210pts @30pts, Champion (20pts), Musician (10pts)

2x Tiranoc Chariot 85pts

RARE 400pts - Allowed 8 Units

2x Repeater Bolt Thrower 100pts

4x Eagle 50pts

TOTAL 4000pts
136 Elves, 2 Dragons, 4 Eagles, 17 Elf steeds

Notes: I am pleased with the way the characters worked out, a bit of everything for a very reasonable cost. This loadout will scale into a 3k army, and can be chopped and changed as needed in normal games. The Shadow Warriors were included for completeness, but I cannot see myself using them so I removed them.
Archers are the only mediocre units included, they are still overpriced, but High Elves have lost the excuse to complain. A more competetive list would feature Spearelves very heavily.
I prefered an infantry army theme in the previous edition, so my army will fit in easily enough.
My old favourites Blessed Tome and Amulet of Purifying Flame are absent from the new list, as are the Albion items.

Quirks with the New Army Book:

1. The Battle Standard Bearer is not restricted in any access to standard equipment for a Hero character. Except by what magical items can be taken (normal BSB restrictions). I could legally give my BSB a shield, or a lance. If I convert the standard into a large back banner I could legally take both!

2. First Among Equals still applies, but as Silver Helms are not core they cannot benefit.

3. The Prince buys a Sun Dragon at a 20pts discount, this might be a misprint.

4. At 5Kpts or larger the quota of available Rare choices outnumbers the Special choices.

5. It is possilbe to give one character both magic rings.

6. As the Albion items wre not in the last book, nor are they in the current book, are they still valid?

7. All the missing Honours and High magic spells can be replicated or replaced by magic items. The replacement for Fortune is Fickle is particularly nasty. A 30pt arcane item that doesn't add to the chance of miscasts but forces enemy wizards to roll twice - applying the worst result. A couple of Drain Magics at the end of your own magic phase would force enemy wizards to risk miscasts to get any casting done at all.

Edited because New Dakka plays hell with old format coding.

From a quick glance, the characers seem decent (altough this from a guy who hasn't read the new book yet, just going from the relatively accurate web buzz). The "get-a-wound-but-reroll-all" thingie would be quite handy for the dragon riding prince. Some unit configurations seem a bit odd, but as this is 4k list, it shouldn't matter too much. In any case, I'd add a standard and perhaps a warbanner for the dragon princes and remove 1 shelm to make the helms a small sacrificial unit.

It would be interesting to see this force vs a 4k skaven/goblin horde.

I am pretty sure the Albion items are still legal. At least, I have not seen or heard of anything that says they have been invalidated.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

FWIW the star lance is the best item available to a dragon mtd prince.

Stick him on a star dragon and you have 4 st 7 attacks and no armour saves, 6 attacks at st 7.

Throw on armour of caledor for 2+ save (you already have it)

Fill rest of magic items to suit your taste.

There is little in WHFB that can withstand that.

FWIW I'd always mt a prince on the star dragon. If your dumping the points on a dragon, just go the whole hog.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I am not keen on that suggestion.

My take on a dragon is that it is there to cause terror and to smash up units that cannot really fight back. A Dragon is a bully, its not there to fight a target that has a chance of winning against it. It doesnt need to the large flying monster ability lets it choose its own targets.

Accounting for this a Prince with a lance and a Sun Dragon is quite sufficient. I placed the Ring there to add to my general magic power. Now the upgrades suggested: Star Dargon and Star Lance are 200pts. I dont see their power being worthy it for the rokle of my monster. sure it would be 'nice' to fly in from the front sometime rather than a flank charge, but I dont need brute power, its not very High Elf either IMHO.

Thats only 3...

3. The Prince buys a Sun Dragon at a 20pts discount, this might be a misprint.

Thats probably only because the difference between a sun and moon dragon isn't that great for an archmage. The 230 points fits the pattern with the star dragon being 370 points too.

5. It is possilbe to give one character both magic rings.

One character can not have more than one bound spell.

7.

The annoying thing about the honours being gone, is it means that a mage taking seer now can't take a silver wand etc.

Managed to read through the new High Elf army book while i was there so i could look up the new fluff on White Lions. It is now thus. (the new book is fantastic btw, absolutely full of fluff and stuff)

Not all White Lions are killed out of hand by the hunters of Chrace. The Asur are not ones for wanton slaughter. If a cub, or young lion is found, it will be taken into captivity, and raised in such a way that it is not so violent and aggressive. Basically catching them before they become vicious killing machines, and raising them right, almost domesticating them. Of course, if one is left to be raised in the wild naturally, it becomes a danger, and is stalked by the chracian hunters. (Not directly quoted, but the jist of it)

This new fluff really spoke to me, and now I'm becoming more and more sure that the pet class will be the White Lion. Maybe you will kill a Lion on your pelt quest and capture its cub, maybe a different mechanic.
It looks really clean, plays relatively smoothly, and is great fun!

As for High Elves in the TT if anyone is interested, there are some beautiful new models, including mages, princes, dragon mages, dragon princes, shadow warriors and chariots. Also the entire army gains the 'Always strike first ' rule. No need to charge anymore, let your opponent come to you.
