Ive been playing 40k for a while and have a sizable chaos army, and now Ive been looking into another army, I was thinking Tyranids, and if so I'm big on just massing gaunts and such. Anyway back to the main topic at hand, would popping off the .... what 125? 175?$ for 120 gaunts be a bit extreme for starting an army?

I would definitely have a case of Mt Dew ready in preperation for its arrival. For such an EXTREME army purchase, you will need some EXTREME refreshment.
Sorry, couldn't resist...
Personally, having 120 unpainted minis staring at me might make me cry. But then, priming them all on the sprue and assembly lining the devil out of them, which would probably work really well given the lower level of detail per model.

Gahhhh.. sounds like the 30-odd termies I have to paint,2 LR's, Baneblade, 40 Vanillas, 20 assault troops, 4 Drop Pods... Trust me man, don't do it. It can lead to some serious mental problems, followed closely by RSI, CFS, and then being a 'singular' entity(your missus can't handle it !!!) If it was not for the All-powerful Emporers Spirit(Bundy Rum) I would not get anything done............

Just looking at tasks like that tends to be daunting. Like the others said, you may just want to do a few at a time. Maybe start with 30 or 40, paint them up along with a hive tyrant and see how things go. If you can make it though that, then move on up to another 40 or so. Or, if you are the type that doesn't mind playing with a gray plastic army, go for the full 120 and just put them together and be done with it. But I wouldn't condone such activity. Personally, having 120 unpainted minis staring at me might make me cry. But then, priming them all on the sprue and assembly lining the devil out of them, ...will make you giggle with glee? If so, its probably mostly due to the primer fumes from the 2 full cans needed for that many models.

If you're in any way like me, you'll get burned out fast. Plan out your army first and decide what models besides gaunts you want. If you're getting all 120 at once like with the apocalypse deal, that's fine.. just build and paint and completely finish 20 to the standard you like. When they're done, go make & finish your hive tyrant. Then do 20 more guants. Just break it up with other projects inbetween so it doesn't get tedious.
If you have 120 of them there to do and burnout starts to set in you may start rushing to get them done and start leaving things off that you wanted to model onto them or forget to file off the flash if you do that to your models normally.. then you'll rush to paint them too and they won't come out as good as if you put the time into smaller parts separately.
If you're not buying the big army deal I'd even say just buy everything 1 box at a time, because if you have several boxes of stuff sitting there on deck you might find yourself moving on to other projects before finishing this one.
Over the years I had to teach myself to do that. Buy 1 box/unit at a time and finish them before moving on to the next one. If I just start buying up everything at once, it ends up never getting done and then getting sold on ebay usually for less than what I paid.

Building Gaunts will burn you out. I've put together now... let me think... 12 boxes of them in total. That;s 192 Gaunts with 384 separate halves to each head. It's putting the heads together that'll kill you in the end. That drains you of energy. And as nice a models as Gaunts are, they're in no way interesting to build. They don't have options like Chaos Marines or Guard. They're even more tedious to build than Necron Warriors. If you want a swarm of Gaunts - then great - but get a few other things to break up the monotony. BYE

A suggestion, buy assembled ones on eBay, strip them and repaint them. If they're assembled decently you WIN! (Otherwise you LOSE!)

Hehe, yea, that much spray paint and my wife would find me dead in the basement a few weeks after the cat found I made a tasty snack.
Honestly, if you want that many buy them. Then just break them up into units and do it that way, as previously mentioned. I personally like unit sizes of about 5. At least with Sisters, 10 was just too much with all the little details, but 5 gave the paint time to dry on the first while I fiddled with the second. Once you get the assembly line rolling, it becomes easier to paint 5 quality figures than just one. Still, definitely do them in small chunks, lest you scream "screw it!" and buy 6 carnifexes.

I'll tell you what's too extreme: Snowboarding down Mount Everest while fighting ninjas with the American flag! But really, 125 gaunts will probably fry your brain.

Yep, I tried that. Then had to build an addition just to hold all the pewter & plastic......
But its ok. The addition has a coffee pot and mini fridge, and the wife lets me into the house to use the bathroom.........
On topic though, start with one or two units and work up from there.

120 in one stretch is rough, but I don't know your painting standard or patience.
Personally, I know I couldn't do 120 Gaunts in a row. I did 16, and I already dread doing another 16.
As has been said, it's really the assembly that kills you. They're simple little kits, but they take a while to clean up all the mold lines on all the little bitz, and they're not particularly fun. "This one looks left, that one looks right. Yay."

As a joke, one of my friends suggested buying me the Endless Swarm for my birthday. Another one of my friends turned around and immediately said 'No, he's never done anything to us to deserve that kind of punishment'.
Gaunts are not fun to build...
