Subject: Eldar Tank Army

I was just going over some of my friends tactics and ideas for armies and wondered what an army could do against a tank heavy eldar army. I'm looking for tactics from all armies against a 2000pt tank heavy eldar army. when you come up with ideas please consider that you are playing against a fairly competent player.

Autocannons. There isn't much better point-for-point than the Autocannon at shaking and killing Eldar Skimmers. It's dirt cheap and most armies in the game can get them on a variety of platforms.

lots of shots you wount get to pen them most of the time since they will be moving over 6" every turn if they can. so go for max number of S6 or better guns and glance the heck out of them.

Don't go for mass S6 if you can help it. Even against Falcons, it sucks compared to mass S7 and 9. The only armies that should mass S6 are the ones that simply cannot mass S7 and 9, like Eldar themselves. Also, because of the force field, point the S7 at Serpents first, and S9 at the Falcons.

Actually, it largely depends on the army. Obviously Eldar do best against Mech Skimmer with their wide array of S6 Multishot weaponry, which the Scatter Laser is most prevalent. For Tau, massed Missle pods backed up by a fair amount of Rail Rifles and, perhaps, Ion Cannon fire is the way to go. With Marines, I have always felt that massed missle/melta combinations worked best against mech Eldar, assuming you don't just go full frontal male nudity AC spam. With Orks, massed Rokkits are the best option. Guard remain the one army where massed S9 firepower is possible, but even then there is a solid argument for the highly point efficient Multilaser and versitile Autocannon.
But all of the weapon option discussions are useless, because the best option against a tank heavy eldar army has nothing to do with your choice of guns. Mobility is the key to beating this army and it is always what I zero in on first, as a mech eldar player. Podding marines in behind a falcon with bolters will work far more frequently than banging away at it with a bunch of hunkered down 5 man las plas squads. You obviously cannot outmatch the Eldar when it comes to manueverability, but you can greatly counter it with mobility of your own. An army that hunkers down and never moves has almost no chance against Eldar (guard excepted, perhaps) because they can pick the fights and hit you where you are weakest. No matter what your army is, you have to have at least the THREAT of mobility to contain the eldar tanks and prevent them from surgically striking small sections of your army and taking you apart piece meal.

What army do you play? If we know that, we can go a lot further to helping you with tactics and army selections. It might also help to know what your standard army build is like and what your general tactics are. We might be able to point out some things you are missing or some things you haven't though up.
In either case, going over generalities isn't going to be as helpful as specifics, so if you can give us some more information, we can help you out a whole lot better.

I have an IG infantry, Chaos assaulty, SP Shooty, Eldar ranger shooty, and Necron Well made army. So i can basicly go with any tactics you suggest based on what army i'll use.

Wouldn't Pulse Lasers be the superior choice?
You only get 1/2 as many shots, but each shot is three times more likely to glance.

I think a well made Necron army should be able to do well against Mech Eldar.
The gauss rules mean that virtually all your troops have the ability to glance the skimmers from any angle. Even a modest unit of 10 warriors, not in rapid fire range, should manage slightly over one glance in a round of shooting. Add in large volume of fire from destroyer squads and (the more common) larger warrior squads, and you should be throwing out a lot of glances. Also, try deep striking a monolith behind the formation of skimmers, close enough for the flux arc (?) to throw all those d6 shots at their rear armor. Mech Eldar doesn't tend to have very good answers for the Monolith's living metal. Mech Eldar shooting will almost exclusively be S6-8, and the living metal rule ignores the fire dragon's melta ability.
The veil lord, monolith portal and destroyers give you decent mobility. Also, the veil lord and monoliths help you get unstuck from units of harlequins assaulting out of the falcons. Granted, the mobility isn't as good as that of Mech Eldar, but the ability to veil a unit of immortals behind a falcon drastically increases your ability to get multiple glances.
Anyway, this is all theoryhammer, as I play neither Eldar nor Necrons.

Posted By Panda4hire on 11/07/2007 7:26 AM I have an IG infantry, Chaos assaulty, SP Shooty, Eldar ranger shooty, and Necron Well made army. So i can basicly go with any tactics you suggest based on what army i'll use. Of the things you mention, the necrons should have the best chance. Load up on destroyers (leave the heavy destroyers at home), immortals, and warriors. Grab 2 orb lords, a veil, and at least one monolith (you may want 2 if you are playing a high point game) since eldar have a really tough time killing them. All you have to do is jump around and get into range with the skimmers. Once there, lay waste to them. You should have a huge number of shots flying their direction, so they are going to fall eventually. Teleporting immortals to the rear of a skimmer is a good plan to get them down. Teleporting warriors to the rear of a skimmer is pointless...keep that in mind. If things get out of the eldar tanks, shoot them...a lot. If they end up in hand to hand with you, teleport out and then shoot them a lot. Make sure you don't split your forces up too much. If you have units out by themselves (other than maybe the monolith) they are going to get torn to ribbons as the eldar focus their fire on those units. So stay in as much of a glob as you can and march forward. Victory will be yours. IG would be the other army I would suggest trying to win with. Load up on as many auto cannons as you can jam into your army. They are cheep and very effective against eldar tanks. Pepper in a couple of las cannons for flavor (maybe on a 3-1 or 4-1 ratio) and you should be good to go. If you can sport a hell hound or two, it would help greatly when things come out of the transports. Just make sure you keep them hidden till the eldar infantry show themselves. You will want to get a few minimum sized squads with minimal upgrades to use as sacrificial lambs. Put them as far forward in your deployment zone as you can and don’t' worry too much if the eldar hit them and wipe them out. On your turn, you can move up and las gun the life out of the eldar that killed your sacrificial squads. Just make sure that all your real units are ~8 inches away from your sacrificial ones so they don't inadvertently end up in hand to hand. In the unlikely event that the eldar ignore your sacrificial units, then you have a unit behind their transports and that can lead to all kinds of fun. Make sure you spread a good leadership bubble around your army, otherwise tank shock will ruin your day.

Lots of assault cannons. Terminators with two assault cannons and tank hunters do well.
