OK so I was looking for a picture of the Japanese Imperial Throne for a new survivor thread. Get no results and the Red Chinese block all further google image searches for the rest of the night.

Though google.cn still works.

And my buddy's flickr account, the first 2 pages were OK, then it was blocked.

It's not just the censorship, it's the sheer randomness of it!

How do they handle searches on Taiwan?

Also is some record kept somewhere by somone about what your list of subversive searches are?

Blocking seems pointless if you don't track what they are searching for in a 1 party state.... at least it would be in my one party state.

Taiwan I think is OK since Taiwan is of course, part of China. But a search on Taiwanese Ind.. Taiwanese Not-China-Ness would get a page cannot be displayed error.

Searches are stored and tracked. There was a scandal this week, Yahoo gave up emails and got a reporter and a democracy activist thrown in jail. They just settled a lawsuit with the families. Tricky situation there since Yahoo was just followng Chinese law. Imagine if Sweden tried to stop US authorities from investigating Child Pr0n or if Saudi Arabia stopped an investigation of terrorist sites.

Saudi Arabia already impedes terrorist investigations, so your example is not helpful.

OK, a lot depends on what the site says and where it is.

(disclaimer, all of this is from media accounts, I have no inside information on the subject)

If it is based in China (.cn sites) then the host has censors on staff. The information bureau of the communist party (former propeganda bureau) will call or email and say 'we found something take it down' and the host has somewhere between 30 minutes and 5 minutes (!!) to delete the offending content. Failure to do so can mean fines, jail time whatever.

Firms must also give up the ISP or email contents of whomever posted the offending info and they may be tracked down. One reporter is in jail for 5 years for forwarding an email from the government telling him not to cover the anniversery of 'certain events in 1989 which I will not mention by name since I would like to retain access to this site'.

Sites outside of China may be blocked for a time or permanently. Sites that change fast and are out of PRC control like wikipedia, myspace.com (but not myspace.cn), blogger, tripod and other hosting sites are banned outright.

Sites with a lot of dangerous keywords will be blocked automatically. This blocking is automatic and may include all sites hosted on a certain server. So if Dakka shares a hosting company with with 'overthrowtherepressiveCPC.org' it might be blocked.

And all traffic in and out of China is routed through a handful of goverment owned servers. So a bottleneck is deliberately created to enable all this control.

Google searches on operation golden shield, the great firewall of china or yahoo china lawsuit will get you more info.

Not necessary. Sea Bass hasve a 3 BS. With the mutation, for 2 extra points you get the "memories of a frying pan," trait. This makes the laser beams Assault 3 for the turn...
